25.01.2022 Next year’s Koonya Garlic Festival scheduled to be held in February has been cancelled. Organisers made the decision ``with much disappointment and sadness that we announce the cancellation of the 2021 Koonya Garlic Festival’’. In a statement they said: ``Our committee has done an enormous amount of preparation throughout the year, but unfortunately the COVID-19 compliance requirements associated with holding the festival at this time go way beyond the capacity of our volunte...er organisation.’’ Despite the Festival’s cancellation, the annual Garlic Growers Competition will go ahead in 2021. Entries will be judged on February 26 and shown in the Koonya Hall on February 27. The committee wishes to thank all those many sponsors, volunteers, businesses, stallholders, presenters, artists, and others who have contributed to the success of our wonderful, community festival in 2020 and over the years. 23.01.2022 Updated: The search following a possible sighting of a paddle boarder near Fortescue Bay last night struggling in windy conditions has been suspended. Inspector Peter Harriss said following the initial report of a paddle boarder heading towards Hippolyte Rocks, police conducted enquiries and interviewed a number of people in the area at the time who confirmed a paddle boarder had been seen close to shore at Fortescue Bay. There were no confirmed sightings of a paddle boarder ...near Hippolyte Rocks, some six kilometres away. In addition, no one has been reported missing or overdue in the area. After a review of the search pattern an appropriate decision was made to suspend the search Breaking news: Tasmania Police are using a boat and helicopter to try and locate a paddler believed to be missing at the Hippolyte Rock off Fortescue Bay. Police are seeking information from anyone who was paddling in or around the Hippolyte Rocks yesterday afternoon, or are aware of anyone anticipating paddling in that area, particularly if they have not returned. Enquiries revealed that several kayaks were sighted in Fortescue Bay during the day, and a further Stand Up paddler was also seen at Fortescue Bay at 4.30pm, but was not seen leaving the water. The paddler’s identities are all unknown. To date no one has been reported missing or overdue. Any information can be passed to police via Radio Dispatch Services on 131444.
