12.01.2022 "On 30 March 1985, the Freshwater Ferry was hijacked by a man who threatened to shoot passengers unless the captain piloted the ferry beyond Sydney Heads into the ocean. The hijacker was subdued after a police officer boarded the vessel and fired three warning shots. It turned out that the man, a New Zealander, had not been carrying a gun, but an empty vodka bottle (the second of two that he had consumed before boarding the vessel) concealed under his jacket. After a short jail sentence, the man returned to New Zealand in January 1986 by stowing away on the Oriana, for which he was also fined." Anyone know where this Kiwi legend is now? I'd love to get his thoughts for the upcoming Save the Ferries edition of the Tawny. I'm sure he'd have some unique insights.

And of all the life philosophies I’ve been lucky enough to overhear, I think Alaska’s greatest ever export, Leslie Frank Drebin Nielsen, sums up what’s really what in this world perfectly: The real big break for me, even before Airplane, I woke up, I decided one morning that I had been taking myself too seriously and I just stopped it, and have been continuing to stop it ever since. 09.01.2022 With the summer temps soaring and the ocean calling, this image that Avalon novelist (among other talents) John Ogden found for his incredible new book Whitewash really gets me emotional. As we frolic in the sea and bask in the sun it’s important to remember that young Aussies, even an African Australian surfer - as depicted in John’s book - in a time not so long ago these fit, strapping young lads made the decision to leave our beachside paradise and head off to gruesome ...war zones and almost certain deaths, all for the urgent duty of keeping our island nation safe. And with tomorrow being the anniversary of Pearl Harbour being attacked, it’s particularly timely. That day is when my pop and his brother, back in 1941, working on the wharves in Sydney Harbour, thousands of miles from harm’s way, upon hearing that horrifying news in Hawaii coming thru the radio, they decided on the spot to quit their jobs and enlist in the Army. Not so long ago, perched perfectly camouflaged on the tree in front of my Fairlight home one morning, this all-knowing avian and I shared a moment of oneness with the universe. It was around the time the Manly Daily gave up the print. Tawny and I looked each other in the eye and we knew there was only one solution, a new monthly mag for the people the Manly Daily had forsook. We g...ot to work.
