24.01.2022 We use a range of different bolts in the boat. For the cast iron ballast, we have made new galvanised iron bolts. For the backbone timbers and other structural members, we have primarily used shop made copper bolts. For the frame to floor fastenings, we have used pre-made silicon bronze bolts. Copper bolts are long-lasting and very easy to make with some simple tools. First, the bolt length is determined, and the copper rod is cut to length then a slight chamfer is gro...und on the end of the end that will be threaded. The bolt blank is then inserted in a metal bash plate with some bolt blank material protruding above the metal plate, and the blank is held securely in a vice. The bash plate is just a bit of 8 or 10mm steel flat bar with a bolt stock sized hole in it. Next, a ball pein hammer is used to make the bolt head by mushrooming the copper until the desired diameter is achieved. The final step is to cut the thread with a thread die. Some larger boatyards have a thread cutting machine, but as we don’t have the volume they make, we just make them by hand. 23.01.2022 This week we began planking. Carvel planking is a great way to build a boat and it is a pleasure to be able to pass on traditional boat building skills to the next generation. @DenmanMarine, TAS, "If you can build a boat, you can build anything."... 22.01.2022 She was a sturdy craft, a Baltic double-ender, a Spitzgattkreuzer which Günther Niemeyer had designed in 1923 after the lines of the Nordic fishing and pilot boats. Constructed of one-and-an-eighth-inch oak John Hay later [1972] re-sheathed the hull in five-eighths-of-an-inch totara planking fastened to the original oak planking. It made for a much heavier hull. 22.01.2022 "The last plank to go onto the boat is called the shutter plank. This plank is usually surrounded, or shuttered in, by other planks, hence the name. Installing this plank is usually a big deal, and an occasion for celebration. Shuttering in the hull is a big milestone, and we celebrate with a little whiskey poured on the plank (hence the alternative name), a little whiskey drunk all around." 22.01.2022 I am like a wild bird, following a voice, looking for a nesting place. Again and again I find myself on lonely cliffs. Often I crawl around and climb until I find a ledge that is impregnable. There I sit and look over the sea. I imagine myself coming from afar, high above, drawing my circles, straining, with sharp eyes, till I find the old nesting place. . . . Then I become restless again, as if I am waiting for something. 20.01.2022 Very few, if any planks on a boat are straight, with most having curved edges top and bottom. Planks also vary in width along their length generally wider in the middle of the boat and skinnier at the ends. Te Rapunga has 20 plank runs per side. Most runs are made up of 2-3 plank sections that are joined together at the butt to make up the full length. That makes just over 100 pieces of planking to spile off, cut, shape, steam and fit to the boat.... Andrew Denman @DenmanMarine, TAS, "If you can build a boat, you can build anything." 17.01.2022 . . . When we are ready to leave, we postpone departure for another two days, because into the harbor sails a Belgian canal barge, the San Luca, which belongs to two French artists, Cilette and Charles. They have sailed it through the canals of Germany, up the River Elbe as far as Prague, and back again, through France, and along the Mediterranean coast. The two of the San Luca, Cilette and Charles, have the same spirit that we have, or perhaps are still trying to find.... Slowly I become conscious of what it is I am looking for, because underlying the surface aim of reaching New Zealand I am seeking something deeper, a spiritual aim. I have been drifting It is after an evening on board the San Luca, after seeing Cilette’s pictures, that I wake up. I feel as if some unknown forces push and mold me, and I try to recognize them, that I may help them, and go consciously the road that seems to be my destiny. Now, since I have seen the spirit of Cilette’s pictures, my eyes begin to penetrate the façades of human life, my ears hear more clearly the voice within. George Dibbern In 1923 Charles & Cilette began a peripatetic life aboard the San Luca. By the time Dibbern met them in 1931 they had travelled the rivers and canals of Europe. He was inspired by their lifestyle , their vision and their values. Cilette authored among other books, The San Luca and Esme. @erika_grundmann L. 17.01.2022 But where, after all, would be the poetry of the sea were there no wild waves Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum Palma may be a pleasant place, and the organization of big traveling firms very efficient, but we fly in horror when, after our peaceful days in San Antonio, we suddenly find ourselves in a tourist wave spewed ashore by two big liners. It is too much loud humanity and we are not used to it. We make haste to be off. Quest ... Ambient vibrations such as wind, waves and human activities are recorded by the same devices that capture earth tremors and volcanoes. This year our global community observed the longest and most pronounced period of quiet or reduced seismic noise in recorded history. Between March and May this year scientists gathered data from 265 seismic stations around the world. This ‘anthropause’ has enabled scientists to better study and differentiate between the earth's natural vibrations and human induced noise. It is hoped that future studies will enable us to better understand the subtilties of the ground beneath our feet. 14.01.2022 In the middle of Ischia harbor is a little artificial island used for compensating compasses. There we make fast and take every single thing out of the ship. From the sails we make a tent; we put our mattresses on the ground, and there we live. Everything is scraped and cleaned, and our boat, with the aid of an Italian ship’s carpenter, is careened. We take off the main boom, lash it, together with the spinnaker boom, as a support for the mast from crosstree to railing. Wit...h the aid of a rope and two three-sheaved blocks, and a windlass fastened to the island, we heave the boat so far over that the keel is dry. In the forenoon we do the one side; in the afternoon we do the other. We have been eight months in the water, and we have no barnacles, no shells, no borer, no weeds, only a light green slime, thanks to our German Hansa Anti-fouling paint, made especially for tropical waters. We give the hull a good coat of paint and, thanks to our new guest, I can get extra frames put into the bow. Then we look at all our gear piled up in a mountain on shore; we look at the boat, and we wonder how the one has ever been stowed in the other. But when at last this is accomplished and we are happy between our two walls again, we enjoy the new cleanliness and order - Quest Image 1: Ischia [Schramm] Image 2&3: Careening ships, Douro [Schramm] @DenmanMarine, TAS, "the spirit of the sea is friendship." 11.01.2022 Sea Fever I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky. And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.... John Masefield (1878 1967) So far, this journey has taken us from Kiel to the UK and on to the Mediterranean. Te Rapunga has sprung leaks, had some new frames fitted & a coat of paint, and soon we will make our way to Italy. Introductions have been made to some of the many people that George and the crew have met along the way and we have mentioned some of the ideas and philosophies that George was beginning to formulate. 10.01.2022 The process we used for making the bronze floors was as follows; A welding procedure was developed for the material to inform the joint design and preparation. (see attached pic) The silicon bronze flat bar was bent to a radius to suit a group of steam bent frames with the section roller. The curved section was then docked into lengths for each frame, and straight sections that sat across the top of the keel was also docked to length.... The joints were then prepped for welding, and the frame components clamped into the boat for tack welding. The strap floors were then tack welded in the boat with the MIG welder. Once cool, the frames were removed from the boat and the welds completed on the bench with a combination of MIG and TIG welding using bronze filler wire and Argon shielding gas. Once the welding was complete, the frames were cleaned up with a grinder and installed in the boat. A silicon bronze strap floor was manufactured for each steam-bent frame to allow us to meet the requirements of Lloyds timber construction rules. 08.01.2022 Celery Top Pine (Phyllocladus aspleniifolius) is one of the world's best boat building timbers and is Tasmania’s most abundant conifer. It is versatile and can be used for any component of the boat. We like to use it in the lower hull sections as it is a hard and dense softwood which holds the floor timber and garboard fastenings well. It is fine-grained and has very low movement in service. @DenmanMarine, TAS, I know the day will come when once more I sail ...into your beautiful harbour. 04.01.2022 Here are some Huon pine planks being cut out from slab stock. Boatbuilders love curved stock as opposed to straight boards as it means we can better match the curve of the plank to the stock and there is less wastage. This planking stock was 1 thick and as our finished plank thickness was only 1 1/8, we were able to cut some thick veneers on the bandsaw that can be used ...later in the build. @DenmanMarine, TAS, "If you can build a boat, you can build anything." 03.01.2022 We are now fitting garboards (the first plank up from the keel) and will continue planking upwards until we meet the upper planking. Garboards are fiddly as they need to fit nicely against a large surface area of the keel and stem rabbet. In this case, the garboard is a single piece plank instead of two pieces which means you have to sneak up on a good fit by trying the plank on the boat, clamping it up and marking any discrepancies on the plank and keel that need adjust...ing. It is nice to see the hole in the boat get smaller as the planks are hung. The black material applied between the planks and the backbone is what we call blackjack, or roofing tar.Andrew Denman @DenmanMarine, TAS, "If you can build a boat, you can build anything."
