18.01.2022 4 Red Flags to watch out for in your child's sleep. When it comes to sleep problems, parents and health professionals have to work TOGETHER. Because putting together the pieces of a sleep problem means you need to have both SIGNS and SYMPTOMS of a problem.... So here are 4 red flags: does your child have any of these?
17.01.2022 Ugh. What a dramatic and upsetting title to this article. I wish articles like these had more practical information rather than just scaring parents - the research shows that pacifiers, used properly under 6 months of age, have LOTS of BENEFITS too. Knowledge is power and parents being educated on how to use pacifiers safely is the key here.... Who'd like more info on how to use pacifiers safely for your child? Carla
16.01.2022 When is it time to stop thumb or finger sucking? Always a tricky question! Here's what I recommend at Thumbsucking Clinic: ... 1 If your child is over the age of 2, it's wise to begin discouraging sucking habits in every setting except for sleep time...if you're awake, you're busy. Thumb and finger sucking is for bedtime. Be gentle and kind...its not worth your sanity. If your child is non-responsive or upset by this, let it go for a little while. 2 If its almost time to begin school and your child still hasn't stopped their sucking habit, now would be a good time to actively try to help them to stop. Reminders like bandaids and gloves or guards can work really well with positive reinforcement and child involvement. Make sure to include them in the process. 3 If it all seems a too overwhelming or nothings working, seek professional help! Every single child is different and having a coach and health professional who understands oral habits can be an absolute lifesaver! Remember, sometimes it really does take a village! 13.01.2022 Don't make them grow up too fast. On Friday I saw a little boy who was barely 2 years old. His family were very concerned about his finger sucking habit and how it might be damaging his mouth. They admitted to me that they had tried a few things to stop it but it only seemed to upset their child, which, in turn, also upset them as his parents.... As he was still a baby, I was so happy I could reassure them that he was little enough to still be sucking his fingers and gave them some gentle strategies to reduce the sucking (not eliminate it) if they wished. Parenting is hard. Some of you might roll your eyes. This may not sound like a big deal to some people, but can I tell you, it can be really stressful for some parents. I've had LOTS of parents very upset in my rooms. Worried they're stuffing up. All parents want to do the right thing by their kids. The good news is, often the right thing to do is to let kids be kids for a while. After all, its a beautiful season of life for many......they're only little for a little while. Have a great Monday. 12.01.2022 We finished Miss E’s Thumbsucking program with her yesterday! Look at her beautiful smile! Thank you Mum for your kind feedback I personally can not thank Carla enough for helping Miss 6 from sucking her thumb. I tried at home with the spray, then gloves but it wasn’t enough. She needed Dr Carla,... the miracle therapist, who could coach her. It’s been a 4 month journey in the program but repetitive steps helped break the habit. To other parents, call her. Save your sanity and send wine like I did. See more

02.01.2022 Thumb or fingers sucking actually begins at around 26-28 weeks and it’s completely normal! It’s actually practice for baby to be ready for nutritive sucking (milk!) as soon as they are born. In early infancy, sucking provides lots of awesome benefits. And it sets up neural pathways in the brain to quench the desire for comfort, contentment and settling early on. But did you know that these neural pathways are sometimes solidified into childhood and some kids con...tinue to use their sucking habit to provide them with benefits, even though it’s not longer developmentally appropriate? At Thumbsucking Climic, we reckon that a large percentage of our patients have underlying health issues (not just psychological!) that haven’t been addressed and THAT’S why it’s hard for many kids to stop the habit. And sometimes, their sucking habit is the symptom of another problem. See more
