19.01.2022 Now most of you are mostly concerned with the timber when it is ready to be used. Some of you are also interested in the process of milling to get the slabs or boards, so this is for you. Here is a very nice Blackbutt log that I milled today. It is about 3m long with 900mm diameter. I have mostly backsawn the boards which is usual with Blackbutt. I have cut the slabs and boards at 52mm. They will shrink during the drying process to about 50mm. Most of the boards are 32...5 wide. The widest slab is 650mm. It took me about one hour to mill this log which includes the stacking as I go. I have not "boxed the heart" as I find that people usually prefer wider boards and don't mind the feature. They will be ready in about 20 months time once they have air dried for a couple of summers and then gone through the kiln. The log was salvaged from a storm fallen tree across a road. Sad to see it come down but good to see it put to good use. As some of you know, we have recently shifted the mill to Donnybrook since we had run out of room at Naval Base. We have purpose built a new insulated/heated shed for storage of dried timber with a lean to off to one side which is where the mill is located. I also sell and supply timber from this location. So if you are anywhere near Donnybrook and would like to come for a visit you would be most welcome. Please call first. Enjoy. See more

18.01.2022 The first photo is of a slab of Cape Lilac. It has just come out of the kiln and has been machined and is ready to go. The following photos show the process of rescue. The tree was in a front yard in Mosman Park. We have several slabs and also some boards from this tree. Unfortunately there was also several nails - but you can't win them all! Enjoy.

16.01.2022 Blackbutt slabs. 1.2m wide. Beauty. You can never have too much Blackbutt. #blackbuttslabs #thefinetimbercompany #timberperth

15.01.2022 Due to technical difficulties updating our Page here, we have had to set up a brand new Facebook Page to coincide with the new business name. So we'd like to ask a huge favour of you; please visit our new Page at fb.me/thefinetimbercompany and hit that Like button. And please share with your woodworking inclined friends and family and watch this space! There is plenty more to come from The Fine Timber Co., still run by The Timber Bloke Derek Doak and team at Naval Base.

10.01.2022 And now for something completely different - Bullich. Another of the lesser known natives of the south west. They are not all curly like this little baby, bit this one is really bonza. These are small pieces for box making but we have larger pieces also. Enjoy. #bullich #thefinetimbercompany #perthtimber

07.01.2022 Here is another beautiful example of some fine craftsmanship. Andy has whooped up this little ripper in a few hours. He has used some of our lovely Tuart, another native to WA but not a commercial species (any more). We have salvaged quite a bit of it in the last couple of years and looking at these photos I am glad that we went to the effort. Enjoy. ALSO - THERE WILL BE NO ONE AT NAVAL BASE TOMORROW DUE TO ME BEING FLAT OUT AT THE MILL AND JASON BEING CROOK AS A DOG. Please pass this on if you know anyone who was planning to visit. Our apologies.

04.01.2022 In need of some good clean Marri boards. All one log. Check the website under packs. We have heaps of kiln dried Marri boards. #marri #thefinetimbercompany
