22.01.2022 This week Indigenous Arts Officer Tarsha Davis visited Baggarrook to run a weaving workshop with the women who live there. Tarsha has only learned the art of weaving herself in the last year, and we are amazed and privileged at how skilled she has become in that short period of time! The Baggarrook program is designed to support highly vulnerable Aboriginal women as they transition from prison. Each participant is provided with transitional housing, and a model of holistic su...pport. 13.01.2022 "This piece of artwork is an acknowledgment to all Indigenous people past, present and future." We are celebrating NAIDOC Week, 8-15 November! The 2020 theme is Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.... Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. www.naidoc.org.au Image: Marksey, Wotjobaluk/Gunaikurnai, Always Was Always Will Be Aboriginal Land 2020, thetorch.org.au/product/722-20/

"I am the turtle from the Yorta Yorta tribe who has just been released from prison. My new journey has begun, where I will travel across the land back to my roots and people in Yorta Yorta Country. When I arrive I will travel down all paths and roads, taking my time to learn from all Elders. I will unite with my people and my Country learning our ways in culture and language. I am Yorta Yorta and this is my Dreaming of the Future. I'm coming home." Image: Chris H, Coming Home 2020

07.01.2022 We have been very active supporting our participants during the pandemic. In response to restrictions accessing Victorian prisons during this time, we invited our in-prison artists to dream of a brighter future and bring that future to life." Kent Morris, Torch CEO recently chatted with the ABC's Jacinta Parsons about our latest exhibition online: Future Dreaming. You can listen to that conversation here. https://www.abc.net.au//kent-morris-on-the-torch-/12873338... https://thetorch.org.au/exhibitions/futuredreaming
07.01.2022 "Due to myself getting locked back up and then having all the COVID-19 stresses, a lot of my thoughts around family and my future have grown dark and gloomy and out of my control. My painting reflects me trying to regain control of my life and future by shining through the darkness." Our Future Dreaming exhibition has given a much-needed voice to our men and women currently incarcerated in Victorian prisons. With only 11 works still available, be part of history and purchase an artwork from our first-ever Future Dreaming exhibition - a collection of In Prison works created during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Browse through the available work today. For those that have already purchased work and selected the pick-up option, our office is open Wednesday and Friday, 10am - 4pm for artwork collection.
