25.01.2022 UNEVEN TYRE WEAR: Here's an example of what we call "50 cent coining", or where the tread blocks wear unevenly leaving high spots the size of a 50 cent coin. You can see that one block is 5mm high while the next one is only 3mm high. The result is greatly reduced handling and braking performance, especially in a emergency. If you see this with your tyres, visit you local tyre shop for a new set.

23.01.2022 Just another reminder how easy our winters are....

22.01.2022 Had a D40 Navara recently that would start in the morning, run for a few seconds and then stop. Turns out there was a small leak from the fuel supply lines at the fuel filter. This would allow air to enter the supply lines overnight, draining all the fuel back to the tank. When it was started in the morning, it would run on the fuel in the filter and then stop. Continued cranking would eventually draw fuel up from the tank, allowing it to run normally. Replace the old cracked hoses with a new genuine Nissan pair to resolve the issue.

21.01.2022 CLUTCHES: Why they wear out. At the heart of every clutch is the friction disc which consists of sacrificial friction material bonded and riveted to a metal plate. Every time the driver slips the clutch, a bit of material wears away. Eventually the material wears level with the rivets. When this happens, the clutch will start to slip as the pressure plate rides on the rivets. Want to know more? Here's a good article on how a clutch works: https://www.australianclutch.com.au/clut/how-a-clutch-works

19.01.2022 OIL COOLERS: These are a heat exchanger style. Coolant goes through one side. Engine oil through the other. Heat from the engine oil is transferred to the coolant and shed via the radiator. Sometimes they fail and allow engine oil into the cooling system, creating a huge mess. This one's from a Jeep. You can see where the oil/coolant mix has created a thick sludge, blocking the radiator hoses and causing the engine to overheat.

18.01.2022 LEAKING WATER PUMPS: A common issue across almost every vehicle, usually caused by a drive shaft seal failure. This one came off an Auid Q7 with 80,000 km on the clock. You can see where coolant has been leaking past the seal (red arrow) and then running down the pump (blue arrow). The white crusty stain is left after the coolant dry out. So if you see a stain like this in your engine bay, you probably have a coolant leak.

18.01.2022 A bit long, but a really good explanation of the causes of turbo failure on diesel engines.

18.01.2022 Here's a great introduction to On Board Diagnostics (or OBD) systems fitted to every modern vehicle. More to follow next week.

17.01.2022 A good and not too technical article on what those numbers on the oil bottle mean

14.01.2022 307 CHEV UPDATE: Here's a few more pics of the 307 we're working on. The block's now been hot tank cleaned, cracked tested and we've also sonic tested the bore thicknesses. It's been bored and honed to 4.000" and a new sleeve in cylinder five as the walls were a little too thin. We've brought in a 3.48" stroke crank and matching rods and pistons to take capacity out to 350 cubes. We've also fitted a set of ARP main bolts and lined honed the main tunnels. Here's Grant measuring the deck heights before the block goes back to the machine shop to surface the decks and zero out the deck height.

14.01.2022 And I though our mornings are cold!!

14.01.2022 DRIVE BELT PULLEYS: Every modern car has a least one of these. Their purpose is to tension and guide the drive belt around all the engine accessories like the A/C compressor and alternator. This one's off a Holden Captiva. Over time the bearing dries out and starts to squeak. So if you hear a high pitched squeak on start-up that (sometimes) gets worse as engine revs rise, you may need a new drive belt pulley.

13.01.2022 TIMING CHAINS: Lots of engines have these. Their purpose is to drive the camshafts, which open and close the valves in time with the crankshaft (hence the name). Usually they last the life of the engine. But sometimes they wear and need replacing. This one's in a Mercedes C200. The chain has become so slack that it's jumped a couple of teeth on the camshaft drive sprockets, removing some teeth in the process. If you hear an odd rattle on start-up, or your engine is running rough you may have a timing chain issue.

12.01.2022 INFINITAS SUPERCHARGERS from Germany. We have an opportunity to import these fantastic supercharger systems for Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Any interest out there?

09.01.2022 This one's for the really technically minded. A brief article on DLC piston pin coating that's now used on many modern European engines. The purpose of the coating is to reduce friction between the piston, piston pin and conrod, thus improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. Just one of the many innovations that makes modern engines so efficient.

08.01.2022 One for the Ford fans. Wonder if we'll see any here is Oz?

04.01.2022 When you know it's overloaded!!

04.01.2022 PX Ford Ranger 3.2L diesel (very) minor coolant leak. We've seen a few of these now. Rangers and BT-50s with a very slow but persistent coolant loss. The leak comes the lower side of the thermostat housing, just out of sight. You need a mirror to spot it, or feel for the leak during a pressure test. You can see the red coolant stain on the bolt in the pics. Fortunately quite easy to repair with a replacement thermostat.
