25.01.2022 One day, when the time it takes to replace a tree is valued, this will not happen

24.01.2022 Only 38 hours left! We have a stretch goal of $25K to make more micro-forests happen in urban hotspots in Canberra - in our schools and neighbourhood parks. Pl...ease pledge and share. 24.01.2022 Thriving in adversity! An increasingly important attribute for urban trees as it climate gets warmer and drier.

24.01.2022 The importance of trees in our urban environment is under valued.

23.01.2022 Look after your trees by giving them a regular drink over summer. Lots of trees are struggling to survive the drought. A long slow watering every vouoek of weeks helps a lot. Set a soaker hose or a normal hose dripping under the tree. Preferably at night to reduce evaporation. Stop when you see water running off.

22.01.2022 Let the ACT Government know where you think more trees are needed in your neighbourhood. An empty parksgopping centre or street verge?

22.01.2022 Watering trees is really important in the drought. You can help your trees survive by leaving a slow dripping hose under the canopy of a tree at night until you see run off or for a couple of hours or so. Don't leave it over night or you'll get run off and waste water. Unfortunately, we are also seeing trees and shrubs dying from heat stress rather than thirst. Even the hardy Viburnum hedges. A tree dying of thirst is likely to wilt, drop older leaves and die back from the ti...ps before dying completely. Trees killed by heat stress can appear very healthy and then in a matter of hours start to go brown evenly across the entire canopy. Essentially, the trees are not physiologically capable of transporting enough water to the leaves to stay alive in extreme heat conditions. Once you see this happen, it's too late. No amount of watering will save them. The 48 day in early January killed a lot of trees, shrubs and hedges that are usually drought hardy. This is our changing landscape. If you want to learn more about keeping your trees alive, call me on 0401 852 053.

19.01.2022 Eucalyptus trees are very shy about their nakedness. Unlike most other trees, eucalypts have a naked bud. Without the protection of bud scales, the buds get damaged in the wind when they're hit by leaves or twigs in the canopy of other branches. The damaged buds don't grow in that direction so a gap forms between the canopies of each branch.

18.01.2022 It's not just a matter of planting tree, it's also requires making room for trees in urban planning. Trees are essential infrastructure for an efficient city.

16.01.2022 Parking on tree roots is usually a slow gradual death for street trees. Climate extremes are accelerating the death of stressed trees.

15.01.2022 Resilience: the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties.

12.01.2022 It'll be sad to see these trees go. Such an iconic part of the drive to the coast. Unfortunately all trees get old and start to become unsafe. Lining a busy highway increases the risk. But this risk can be managed. It is possible that, with tree hazard assessment, maintenance and a systematic removal and replacement program, the heritage value of this planting could be saved.

10.01.2022 This is a great local initiative to increase the density of our urban forest. Please help them reach their crowdfunding target of $20,000 on https://www.startsomegood.com/microforest.

10.01.2022 They came one foggy morning. They came for our street tree. It was a sickly and stunted blue gum with significant decay. Planted over 60 years ago - it was time too go.

08.01.2022 Did you know Canberra's urban spaces can be up to 8C hotter on summer nights than nearby rural areas? We are looking forward to installing an edible climate-rea...dy micro-forest on Lonsdale St, Braddon in early April. It will demonstrate how we can grow food and shade in our urban areas. 08.01.2022 Urban forest cover is a valuable asset that governments, councils and landowners need to build and protect

07.01.2022 Enjoying the wonderful elms and English oaks at Dickson pool. Great choice of trees - excellent shade, spreading canopies and safe, strong branches.

07.01.2022 Climate change is likely to change our urban treescapes. Australian natives are not immune but will prove more resilient than many European and North American species.

06.01.2022 Trees add value to our lives beyond aesthetics. If they were valued properly, it would create incentives for property developers to keep them.

06.01.2022 Having mature trees in cities requires compromises. The test is whether the compromise includes the true value of mature trees that have taken decades to grow.

06.01.2022 When trees are left to grow...

04.01.2022 The vast majority of our forests have evolved to recover from fire in spectacular fashion. It is not one fire that risks recovery, increased frequency will wipe out species and entire ecosystems.

03.01.2022 Faulty trees fail on windy days. Any defects, decay or poor form will be tested on days like today in Canberra. Contact the tree man to get your trees checked - 0401 852 053.
