21.01.2022 Flip Tip | Dont Forget The Insulation! Nobody likes paying high electricity bills, and by choosing and installing good insulation during your build you could cut your heating and cooling costs by 50%! A well-insulated home is the first step to ensuring both thermal (and sound) comfort levels are maintained. How to Choose?... With so many options to choose from, there are a few considerations to take into account when selecting the product for your build. If you have a level of compliance to meet from your local authority (i.e BASIX in Australia or SANS10400-XA in South Africa) your building envelope will have to meet a minimum "R-value" and this will vary depending on the location as different climatic conditions require different levels of thermal efficiency. Wed recommend contacting a certifier or a basix specialist who will be able to tell you what R-value is required. When purchasing insulation, keep in mind that this will likely provide the greatest portion of required R-value but it does not need to do all the work as any wall or roof is comprised of many components, and each component has an inherent R-value. This is largely influenced by the density, composition and thickness of each element, you will need to find out each of these things in order to correctly calculate the overall R-value. There are two main types of insulation, reflective and bulk, these can be used in isolation but more often than not they are used together as a composite to reach the required values. Reflective insulation is often no more than a thin membrane, while bulk insulation, as the name suggests, creates the bulk of the required thickness. There are so many types of insulation that we cant go into each one but we are seeing a huge increase in the use of rigid insulation board which can double up as a ceiling or walling panel. Most of these panels can be primed and painted directly which reduces build cost and time. The threat of using these is in the creation of thermal bridges. most commonly a steel strap, a plughole or picture hook. These may seem small and insignificant but they can compromise the effectiveness of your overall building envelope dramatically. Just think how small the gap is between your door and the floor but in the middle of winter how much draft comes in and how that small draft affects the overall temperature of the room. Lastly, and this is something so often overlooked is the colour of your house. Dark colours naturally attract more heat than light colours requiring more insulation in warm environments, like Australia. The same logic can be implied inversely for colder climates which are more concerned with heating and a darker colour may be more advantageous.

Tools needed: /A drill with timber/steel drill bit and a screw head thats suitable for the screws youre using /Wood saw . Method: /Build the box, (as I said cut 2 planks in half) screw the sides together and fix the bottom planks to the base with a spacer to raise them /Line the box with shade cloth, use the small wood screws to fix it in place to the sides /Fill the box with your soil mixture* and mix them up with a fork as you add them /Plant your herbs/veggies and dont forget to water them! . *Soil mix ratio (we did a gardening course with @jozifoodfarmer and this mix has proven to be brilliant) 4 parts potting soil 2 parts compost 1 part vermiculite 1 part peat moss . 11.01.2022 FLIP TIP TUESDAY Quality Control - Tiles Ive seen a few posts on various renovation groups where clients have been left with poor tile work and had their tiles fall off the walls. Not only can this be extremely dangerous but it causes unwanted inconveniences too. An easy way to check if youre tiles have been properly adhered to the wall or floor is to simply knock on them, if they make a hollow sound it means there are patches of adhesive missing and the likelihood of the... tile falling off or coming loose is a lot higher, mark these tiles as defects with a piece of chalk or pen and get your tiler to redo them properly before the warranty period is up and its too late! On a more inspiring note, how stunning are these feature wall tiles by @tilesofezra

09.01.2022 Free standing baths have been a hot topic lately! We had lots of questions asked about choosing the right size, cleaning, installation dimensions and tap/spout positions. If youve been considering a freestanding bath, keep reading! Make sure the size suits you and your bathroom! The best way to test a baths comfort is to climb into the one youre looking at in the showroom, theres nothing worse than finding out your bath is uncomfortable after youve installed it. Pla...n for at least 120mm from the top of the bath to the surrounding walls so you can fit your hand and/or mop down the sides to clean, small dark holes = spiders and dust traps and no one wants that! If possible, centre your spout on the long side, so you can use your bath from both sides, no one wants to lean on the edge of a bath when theres a spout in the way. Incorporate a ledge or niche behind your bath to house toiletries and maybe even a pot plant or candle or, if youve got room you can style the space with a freestanding feature table. When lighting the space above your bath, rather position the light to one side than directly overhead, and wed recommend putting it on a dimmer too. If youre having a nice soak you dont want a light shining in your face from directly above. These are but a few of the design considerations to take into account, if youre planning a bathroom reno or redesign, DM us to get in touch
