08.01.2022 Imagine on Sunday you received a phone call from your girlfriend who has found a lump in her breast. You talk to her for a while, then finish the call. After the call you are feeling sad because you have started to think of your much loved aunty who died of breast cancer 5 years ago. You cannot seem to get rid of the feeling of sadness no matter what you do. Your husband walks in and asks what’s wrong, and you tell him about your friend finding a lump in her breast and how yo...u are feeling sad. His response is less than supportive. He then goes on about how women go on and on about breast cancer as if it is the only thing that can happen to a person. He continues to discount your feelings displaying a total lack of empathy, and you wonder why you told him. Feeling let down you walk out into the garden and start pulling out weeds with great gusto. On Monday you go to work as a hairdresser still feeling a little sad. Your first client talks about how her husband is not caring and how lonely she feels. The second client shares she is worried about a lump in her breast and is going to the doctors on Wednesday. The third client starts to talk about her mother being diagnosed with breast cancer and how devastated they all are. You look at the clock and realise it is early in the working day and you are feeling uncomfortable and much sadder. What do you do? The unplanned counsellor is an online course to help workers understand how client’s stories can impact on a worker and explains second hand trauma and how to deal with other people’s problems as well as how to protect yourself from compassion fatigue.
