22.01.2022 Once upon a time I may have booked in for wine tasting, although these days, olive oil tasting is more my pace So, I’m looking forward to today’s virtual ‘extra virgin olive oil tasting experience’ with Cobram Estate. At the very least, I’ve got some nice olive oil samples (ps: I’m not aligned with the company in any way ... it just seemed like a fun thing to do pps: I probably do need to get out more ) #herbalist #oliveoil #oliveleaf #cobramestate #extravirginoliveoil #urbanherbals #theurbanherbalist #rachelhull #herbalmedicine

21.01.2022 An interesting article for The Conversation to post. The comments section is interesting as well. Thoughts? https://theconversation.com/how-to-make-covid-vaccines-more

21.01.2022 Flashback to making a Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) tincture ... using my trusty red tincture press

17.01.2022 FIRST AID COURSE & CPR for 2020 As someone who usually works with the public (currently online only), having an up to date first aid & CPR certificate is vital. It's also a membership requirement for my herbalists association. And besides all of that, it seems like a good idea for all of us really because 'you never know'. So, after booking my 'virtual' first aid & CPR course with St John's Ambulance, imagine my surprise when this arrived in the mail! Strange lookin...g? Yes indeed ... although it (he? she? they?) did turn out to be quite an effective way to practice CPR. Things are wrapping up here as this crappy 2020 year comes to an end, so if you're wanting a herbal refill, let me know soon. Contact details are in the Bio or on the website: www.theurbanherbalist.com.au

17.01.2022 TURMERIC Here I am. Happily tip toeing through the Turmeric at my friends property in Northern NSW. You can see the above ground leaves here but it’s the underground rhizome that we use in herbal medicine & cooking. According to Ayurveda, Turmeric has a pungent post digestive effect (Vipaka) & a heating potency (Virya). This is useful information to have as a Herbal Medicine practitioner as it suggests that, while Turmeric is a very useful spice/herbal medicine, over consum...ption may aggravate Pitta. I love herbal medicine from all sorts of traditions & I particularly enjoy the depth of understanding that learning Ayurveda brings to my existing herbal medicine practice. If you would like a herbal medicine consultation with me, bookings for online consultations can be made via the website: www.theurbanherbalist.com.au * Image of Rachel & Turmeric plants by Jessie Chapman @radianceretreats * Turmeric root image by Steve Buissinne from Pixabay #herbalmedicine #ayurveda #turmeric #haridra #westernherbalmedicine #naturalmedicineweek #herbalist #urbanherbals #theurbanherbalist #northernnsw #herbalists

16.01.2022 MULLEIN (Verbascum Thapsus) I love this plant with her proud, yellow, candlestick like stalk . Mullein is such a useful plant for Herbalists. Lucky for me, this one self seeded from last year’s plant & just popped up in the garden. While the leaves are often used in a specific type of respiratory formula, the flowers are individually picked & used in ear drop oils ... making sure to leave some for the bees of course

15.01.2022 CHANGE OF SEASON Autumn is my Mum’s favourite season although I’m not sure my constitution & dry, crisp, windy weather agree with each other. How about you? I must admit the Autumn colours are quite spectacular though. Just a reminder that I’m taking the month of April, 2021 to engage in some self-care. I’ll be back in clinic for online consultations on Monday 3rd May, 2021. See you then!

13.01.2022 Beautiful Marshmallow leaves (Althaea officinalis) straight from the garden (& already in the dehydrator). Once dry, I'll have them available for various gut & respiratory soothing blends. Marshmallow root is more commonly used for 'inflamed, hot type' gut conditions, although the soft, fluffy leaves also have their place (& is what I've chosen to harvest today). One important aspect of being a hands on herbalist is making sure you are prepared for when you may need something ... the saying "make hay while the sun shines" comes to mind. So that's what I've been doing today.

12.01.2022 Glorious Ginkgo biloba tree at the Geelong Botanic Gardens

09.01.2022 It seems that every white cabbage moth in the neighbourhood is having a party in our garden. They seem to love the French Lavender

08.01.2022 Taking an April Clinic Break Hi Everyone. Well, what a year it’s been so far. I don’t know about you but it’s been rather intense in my household. With ‘self care’ in mind (& because I like to focus on my clients 100% once I commit to them), I’ve decided to temporarily close the books to new clients for the month of April, 2021. For existing clients (or anyone who has already made an appointment), I’m still here & very happy to keep supporting you. You’ll need to text or ca...ll me though, as the online booking calendar has been turned off for the next month. For new clients, I’ll be back for herbal medicine consultations starting Monday, 3rd May, 2021.

06.01.2022 HOME GROWN HARVEST Appreciating the simple things in life, particularly the 3 year old pear tree, which is the gift that keeps on giving. Is there anything in your neighborhood or garden that you've been enjoying lately?

04.01.2022 BACOPA MONNIERI (BRAHMI) If your medium to long term memory is not quite what it used to be, or you’ve been finding it difficult to concentrate over an extended period of time, then Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi) may be of interest to you. Beloved in Ayurvedic Medicine & cherished by Western Herbalists, Bacopa (which is how Western Herbalists often refer to this plant) also makes a lovely garden plant. In particular, she drapes nicely over the sides of pots, has little green leav...es (the main medicinal part) and dainty white flowers. She likes to stay moist so I keep the pot near a water supply. There has been some confusion about the name ‘Brahmi’, as a different herb (Centella asiatica - commonly called Gotu kola), has also been referred to as Brahmni. While they have some similarities of use, there are also differences, which is where it’s helpful to know the Latin names of herbs. Of course there are SO many factors that contribute to memory issues and ‘brain fog’, so a good Clinical Herbalist will take a thorough look at your situation, diet, lifestyle, constitution & any medications you might be taking, to find the best fit for you. Although this plant is not considered a high risk plant, there are some points to consider, such as high saponins, which can irritate digestion if not taken after food; and effects on the thyroid (which may or may not be beneficial, depending on your situation). If you would like the advice of a qualified Herbalist, I’m available for online consultations (Australia wide) & any remedies can be posted to you (within Australia). Bookings via the website or booking link in Instagram Bio: www.theurbanherbalist.com.au

03.01.2022 Experimenting with the new Biochef dehydrator (so I can access pesticide free medicinal herbs straight from the garden all year around).
