24.01.2022 I watched a most gorgeous encounter unfold this morning. A 75-year-old meets a 17-year-old and they share their experiences of severe housing stress and homelessness with each other. There was a beautiful softening, and opening of hearts, as they chartered each other’s journey, so gently, so lovingly. Life doesn’t get much sweeter than moments like these So lucky I was to have Kay and Connor in my studio.

21.01.2022 When I spoke to Alice about being lost and found she said getting lost is the best way to be surprised and learn new things. Life is meant to be like that, she believes. If you go on a path you already know it’s not surprising. Being lost and found reminds her of her favourite French word serendipite (happy accidents).

17.01.2022 Homelessness is unsafe. Women who are homeless are particularly vulnerable to victimization, physical, and sexual violence. Everyone should have a safe and decent place to call home. It’s not a privilege, it’s a human right. According to current research conducted by the Housing for the Aged Action Group, 400,000 women over the age of 45 are at risk of homelessness in Australia. And this is likely to grow because Australia has made little policy progress on housing afforda...bility. 17.01.2022 Athol’s story will be broadcast today on Life Matters, ABC Radio National, between 9-10am. A story about a unique friendship and dealing with the loss of independence as we age. Recorded conversations over a period of seven years, this piece is essentially about love, connection and dreams coming true.

16.01.2022 I am so pleased to have won an Arts Tasmania Education Residency worth $10,000. This means I’ll be paired with a school in southern Tasmania early next year. I'll be working with young people to create a more inclusive, kind and compassionate world through courageous and intimate audio storytelling podcasts. I have previously run workshops at two wonderful schools, Woodbridge and Peregrine and what I see is enormous potential in the students to create meaningful and engaging stories about things that matter most to them. One of the reasons I had the studio built was so I could share my passion with young people who I find so inspiring to be around, their ideas and their energy. I am so grateful to have been one of four artists to receive the grant.

15.01.2022 The Wayfinder turns into a listening vessel for Homelessness Week 2020. In-depth, personal, honest, raw and inspiring storytelling.

15.01.2022 I’ve always loved the idea of an ‘invisible picture palace’ where you lay back, close your eyes, and allow sounds to transport you to another place. It was a thrill to be a part of such an event recently at the LongHouse Hobart. An audio story I made about love, friendship, dreams coming true and the challenges of ageing was played in this sacred space allowing participants to be transported as they listened. by Eddie Safarik If you missed the story you can listen here: ... https://www.abc.net.au//my-last-wish-the-poetry-a/12831342

15.01.2022 Four simple questions lead to some profound responses: What do you think the ingredients are for living a happy life? Do you have any advice for the younger generation? What kind of person do you think you are now? What do you cherish the most when you look back at your life? This is one of my favourite pieces. The audio was captured by me and images by Andrew Wilson. A City of Hobart project.

12.01.2022 I am constantly surprised by the beautiful things people say when they’re sharing ideas with me in the studio. Sometimes I sit across the table from them and tears well up in my eyes. This was definitely one of those times. You can hear the story here: https://soundcloud.app.goo.gl/Gjr5mNP2bVvDp6zF6

12.01.2022 The City of Hobart has been doing so much around the issue of homelessness in and around the city. It’d be great if the state and federal governments were just as passionate, proactive and interested in resolving the issue of unaffordable housing in cities. It was such a privilege to work with Danielle Walker and the Housing with Dignity team to collect and share stories around people’s experiences of being without a home. These billboards are up in Mathers Lane, in the heart of the city, drawing attention to the issue of homelessness and how it can affect anyone.

09.01.2022 For some people the experience of being lost is scary. When you lose confidence, self-worth, or courage it can leave you feeling very vulnerable. I spoke to Scott about his experience of losing these things and what finding courage again does to us and our lives. We also talked about finding and losing people and the lessons we learn from having people come in and out of our lives.

08.01.2022 Location for today’s sound recording workshop It was expected to be raining all day. Feeling so blessed.

08.01.2022 I thought I was off for a beach day on the sunny east coast but I’m pleased to say I got a little sidetracked and instead spent time with the incredible Tasmanian Land Conservancy team, walking and experiencing their newest reserve just outside of Buckland. A huge 1,534ha reserve now protected for now and future generations to come. These photographs taken by Eddie Safarik show just how stunning and diverse the property is. I got to interview a friendly local who owns land ne...xt to the Prosser River Reserve. Bob has spent most of his life protecting Tasmania’s wild places and lives out his days protecting and managing his property so that it can continue to be a home to the rare and endangered plants and wildlife that live there. Speaking with Matt Taylor, TLC Conservation Ecologist, and James Hattam, TLC’s CEO, I got to know why acquiring this property is so important. Home to critically endangered black gum, old growth blue gum, swift parrots, wedge-tailed eagles, Tasmanian Devil, eastern quoll, spotted-tailed quoll and eastern barred bandicoot. Totally amazing that the property is now protected and will be conserved thanks to the legacy of the McGregor family. See more

06.01.2022 The radio feature I made about my beautiful friend Athol Delaney - ‘My Last Wish’ - has been selected to be showcased at the 47th International Features Conference (IFC) in Cologne, Germany this weekend. The IFC brings together documentary makers from all over Europe and the world to showcase some of the finest radio features and podcasts. The conference will be virtual for obvious reasons and has attracted a record number of participants (270). I have also been asked to spea...k at the opening ceremony along with Neil Verma, Assistant Professor of Sound Studies at Northwestern University in the US and Bettina Ruehl, a freelance journalist based in Nairobi and Cologne who has been writing about Africa for over 20 years. The conference is being hosted this year by Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln (WDR), a German public-broadcasting institution. In these times where beliefs seem to be more important than facts, and where conspiracies are called theories, the narrative of a story is becoming more and more important. This year’s theme The Power of Narrative is an open invitation to discuss the narratives we as journalists disseminate. Today the question is not only how to narrate a story, but more crucially: What kind of story am I going to tell? Which perspective do I adopt? Am I transparent about my motivation? And which broader ideas do I serve? WDR See more

06.01.2022 Remember Liz and Ray and their beautiful love story? Well, they've made it onto national television. After my story aired on ABC Radio National last month, both The Project and That's Life magazine jumped onto it. Last week The Project flew a crew to Tassie to film them (story below). Here is the original radio story https://www.abc.net.au/.../liz-and-ray:-a-love.../13288922
