23.01.2022 Endometriosis is one of the most common health issues experienced by women and one of the leading causes of infertility. . Its when tissue similar to the endometrium (uterine lining) grows in other areas of the body such as the Fallopian tubes, ovaries or pelvic lining. . Just like the endometrium, the misplaced tissue thickens and sheds in response to hormones, but has no way of passing through the body. This leads to pain and inflammation and sometimes adhesions or scar tis...sue. . Common symptoms include pain (usually pelvic) before or during menstruation, irregular or heavy periods, spotting between cycles, cramping or pain during bowel motions, urination or intercourse, bloating and infertility. . The most concerning statistic is that it commonly takes 7-12 years to be diagnosed and there is currently no cure. . The good news is, naturopathy and natural medicine are very effective in managing, treating and preventing symptoms. . Following an antiinflammatory diet (eliminating processed foods, alcohol, caffeine, refined carbohydrates and sugars) is a start. 22.01.2022 Let's get to the heart of the matter . Whilst many Australian women think their greatest health risk is breast cancer, it is actually coronary heart disease (CHD). And...wait for it...in Australia, CHD causes more deaths in women than in men. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) refers to all diseases involving the heart and blood vessels, with the 3 most common in Australia being CHD, stroke and heart attack. It's important to know that symptoms of heart attack in women can be... quite different to men. Rather than easily recognisable crushing chest pain, women may experience shortness of breath, back, neck and abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea or vomiting, palpitations and fatigue. Risk factors for heart attack in women that we can't change include family history, age (as we get older our CVD risk increases, especially for women post menopause) and ethnicity. Risk factors we can modify include smoking, being overweight, elevated cholesterol, diet, physical inactivity, diabetes, blood pressure and depression. Now is the time to quite literally put your heart and soul into your health. 20.01.2022 As someone with a very busy mind and endless to do list, this is something I regularly have to work on. Truly being in the present moment brings about a desired peace and contentment, but it's often easier said than done. . Sometimes we just turn up and run through the motions, doing things automatically, without paying full attention or mindfulness to what we are doing. . I'm often invite my yoga students to "let your practice today be as if every movement you make is for th...e first time". Instead of mechanically running through the poses or rushing ahead or wanting to be like the ridiculously flexible person next to you, how about doing it, as if for the first time. . This means bringing complete awareness to your body and how it feels in each movement and moment. Letting go of self judgement, what's right or wrong and moving with your breath and the sensations. It takes practice, but the reward is a deeper connection and contentment. . This can apply to other aspects of our life. If we truly practice mindfulness, even in every day activities like washing the dishes, going for a walk and actually feeling our feet hit the earth, actively listening to and admiring nature, sitting down to enjoy a full cup of tea, switching our phone off when out for dinner, then, we become a human being rather than a human doing. . A little mindfulness goes a long way. What one thing can you do today with your wholehearted attention? Urinary incontinence, or leaking urine, is a common health problem for women, but many suffer in silence. . A weakening of the nerves and muscles leads to poor bladder control. . Two of the most common types are stress incontinence (e.g when you laugh, sneeze or exercise) triggered by pressure on the bladder and urge incontinence (when you feel a strong urge to visit the toilet but don't m...ake it in time, or you visit the bathroom frequently) triggered by an overactive bladder. . Common causes include pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, poor toilet habits, constipation and straining, medications or underlying health conditions. . Day" and its about empowering you to connect with the people around you and start a conversation with anyone who may be having a difficult time. Asking "Are you OK" though is just the first step. It's important that you follow 4 steps:... 1. Ask them - Are you OK? How are you travelling? What's been happening? 2. Listen to their response - without judgement. I'm ready to listen if you want to talk. Is there someone else you'd rather talk to? 3. Encourage action and offer support - How can I help? What would take the pressure off? What do you enjoy doing? Have you thought about seeing a professional? 4. Check in. Make time to check in with them again later. Let's chat again in a couple of days. 06.01.2022 There's a little bit of change in the air at the moment and whilst it can make me a fraction uneasy, a tad resistant as I feel things being thrown a little off balance, I know ultimately that change is the only way forward and I have to embrace it. . Change is the one constant in life, it is inevitable, whether it's big or small and whether we want it or not. . So why do we resist it? Is it fear that holds us back? Are we afraid of the uncertainty it brings?... . The current change for me is not dramatic at all, just a little uncomfortable, but even so, I feel a slight resistance. Ultimately though I have two choices, I can continue to resist it or embrace it. So I'm learning to embrace it knowing that change always leads to growth. . 02.01.2022 My upcoming train journey on the Indian Pacific, later this week with my Mum, to celebrate her 70th Birthday, got me thinking about this quote. . Marianne Williamson offers us this perfect reminder to stop and let go of things that are not meant for us. Sometimes it can feel like some opportunities pass us by, that we missed out on something amazing, that other people seem to get the chance to do the things we hoped or dreamed of for ourselves. . But in reality, these things ...weren't meant for us. It brings us back to trusting that everything is just as it should be, that your train is on the right track, that everything you need is on it's way to you. . Marianne also suggests that, rather than desperately trying to stop or jump on board the train you think you want, let it keep going, then the one behind it the one that IS your train - can make it into the station. .
