23.01.2022 :: PCOS :: We’ve known clinically that PCOS doesn’t always present as, well, PCOS. There is a far broader collection of phenotypes for PCOS than has been adequately documented. It’s pleasing to see this recent paper looking at PCOS subtypes and genetic associations. From the discussion: The key traits driving the subtypes were BMI, insulin, SHBG, glucose, LH, and FSH levels. The reproductive subtype was characterised by higher LH and SHBG levels with lower BMI and blood gluco...se and insulin levels. The metabolic subtype was characterised by higher BMI and glucose and insulin levels with relatively low SHBG and LH levels. The remaining 40% of cases had no distinguishable cluster-wide characteristics, and the mean trait values were between those of the reproductive and metabolic subtypes. Here’s the study https://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article

21.01.2022 12 more days until Spring! Were often asked about what sunscreen products we recommend. A great place to start is checking labels as there are a few nasties you want to steer clear from and some other ingredients to be on the lookout for in a great quality product!... Were always saying how this is the stuff they should be teaching girls in school. In our experience, everyones perception of their normal period varies so much and as we work with them and educate them towards restoring balance in their body, theyre often AMAZED to experience a truly normal period! One of the most common things we hear from our patients, and podcast listeners from around the globe, is that life would be a whole lot rosier if they didnt have hormone woes! So we designed the 28 Day Hormone Reset! It is an evidence-based program that is guaranteed to move you in the right health direction! Are you wanting to understand your body better? Do you want to know which foods you should eat to help with oestrogen metabolism and balance? Would you like to learn about the herbs and supplements that specifically help women with hormonal issues? 19.01.2022 Seed cycling is all the rage in the world of hormonal health and for good reason! Its an inexpensive, down to earth and straight forward habit for taking control over your hormones. In case you havent heard, healthy ovulation and menstruation is critical to womens health and not just in terms of making babies! The information below can be beneficial for both ovulating and menopausal women. Seed cycling is used to maintain a regular menstrual cycle and restore balance... to hormones including oestrogen and progesterone. Sex hormones such as these have specific requirements for essential fatty acids and minerals for both their structure and function! Seed cycling works by alternating different types of seeds during the different phases of your cycle, to provide the body with a timely dose of essential fatty acids and nutrients. Take a tablespoon of each seed and blitz in a coffee grinder to break down the seeds effectively. The ground seeds can be added to your morning smoothie, on top of oats, avocado, yoghurt or as a garnish on soups and curries. Adding the ground seeds once daily is ideal. Day 1 14 (Follicular phase) + Flax seeds (linseeds) + Pepita seeds (Pumpkin seeds) Day 14 28 (Luteal phase) + Sesame seeds + Sunflower seeds Buy organic, whole seeds rather than pre-ground seeds. Flax seeds, in particular, are very sensitive and the fatty acids within can oxidise quickly on exposure to too much heat or light! Once ground, store any excess in an air-tight container in the fridge to preserve the anti-inflammatory essential fatty acids and prevent them from becoming pro-inflammatory! YOU CAN LEARN MORE ON OUR 28 DAY HORMONE RESET PROGRAM STARTING AUGUST 1st!

14.01.2022 IT'S YOUR TIME TO OVERCOME YOUR HORMONE DRAMAS AND FEEL FABULOUS AGAIN! www.thewellnesswomen.com.au/reset28 >> STARTS THIS SATURDAY 1ST FEBRUARY <<
13.01.2022 Now more than ever lets support the men in our lives to have great stress coping and immune boosting strategies! Women and men respond to stressors differently and our immune responses are also different! Womens immune systems are generally more robust and oestrogen certainly has an immune protective role (this is often why we see women have flu like symptoms right before their period or an increase in thrush/candida or bacterial vaginosis around menstruation with the... decline in oestrogen) whereas testosterone has an immune suppressive effect. The chromosome also has immune related genes, which of course women have two of! Women also have enhanced capabilities to produce antibodies which makes us less susceptible to viral infections (Taneja, V Front Immunol 2018). Statistically there seems to be a gender disparity of those being affected by COVID-19 as males seem to have a higher fatality rate, which increases with age. What this means is that men may need to do different things to improve their immune system and decrease stress than what might work for women. When men are stressed they typically go into the classic fight or flight response with elevated cortisol and epinephrine, which lowers immune responses, so its even more important right now for them to have effective stress reduction strategies and consume an anti-inflammatory diet rich in wholefoods. Men often seek to escape and compartmentalise (Im obviously generalising here) in times of stress so distractions, sports, exercise etc may be great to engage in right now. Whereas women will naturally want to reach out and nurture others! If we cant connect with our girlfriends and loved ones in person then why not have a coffee date via skype? Lets look after each other, make sure the men in our lives have good coping strategies and of course support our girlfriends too Were all in this together See more

12.01.2022 NEW PODCAST ALERT WWR 178: Normal Bleeds (and what it means!) What is a normal period or blood quality and what does it mean? ... This week we unpack all the things that constitute a normal period and what some of the variations women experience can mean! In a nutshell, a normal period = Should start with fresh red blood Be heavier for a couple of days, then taper off to nothing No spotting No brown blood or heavy clotting Ranging from 4 to maximum of 7 days Should get about 30-40ml of blood loss on average Remember that menstrual blood is not all made up of just blood and that it is actually highly biologically active tissue enriched with the uterine microbiome, stem cells and other endometrial transudate. Tune in! For all of this and SO MUCH MORE

12.01.2022 More from our normal periods podcast! What about variations in colour: Normal bleeds - Bright red blood colour containing good amounts of haemoglobin and the flow moves well. Dark but still red blood/burgundy indicates inflammation and increased prostaglandin production... Brown old blood = oxidised blood/stagnant flow Dark blood/extremely dark red possible endometriosis Pale pink/thin blood hormonal imbalance, perimenopausal changes The colour will darken with more oxidation of the haemoglobin and as the flow becomes stagnant. Blood consistency: Watery/thin consistency - perimenopause because the uterine lining is thin, can also occur post surgery Thick blood more endometrial thickness, potential endometriosis Is clotting normal? Smaller sized clots (smaller than pinky nail) can be normal and some cervical mucous can also be present which is normal. Large clots means that there is some clotting factors present, the body cant keep the blood in a fluid state, usually associated with heavy flow. Heavier clots can also indicate: * Iron deficiency * Endometriosis * Coagulation disorders * Liver issues * Fibroids Assessing blood quality can be inaccurate due to menstrual product choice such as tampons oxidation ya have already occurred. Menstrual pads or cups are usually more accurate to assess this. Tune in! For all of this and SO MUCH MORE The Hello Cup

05.01.2022 Bloating is a common complaint from many women. Often PMS or peri-menopause can be at the root of the cause, or more specifically, female hormones! Our sex hormones follow a distinct pattern each month, and at certain times (for example as one hormone drops off and another becomes dominant) it means that symptoms are more likely to crop up. However, if a hormone imbalance is apparent, symptoms can become a real pain. Symptoms related to bloating can take many different form...s and people are often affected differently. Lets look at water retention water weight is a common complaint and although we dont understand the exact cause, it seems the hormone oestrogen may be to blame. For women suffering from more typical PMS symptoms including heavy, painful periods, mood swings and sore breasts water retention is often more likely to crop up. Gut symptoms such as farting and bloating, constipation and sluggish bowel function, may also signs of hormone imbalances. What can you do? ... join our 28 Day Hormone Reset! See link in bio Drink plenty of water Drinking enough water will not only help ensure your gut moves along nicely, (helping to protect against the vicious cycle of constipation), but it also helps to ward off water retention. If you arent properly hydrated your body is more likely to cling onto any extra reserves! Watch your body weight Both being under or over weight can have a negative impact on your hormones, which as above, can give rise to symptoms including bloating. Our fat cells act as oestrogen reservoirs so if you have too many, or not enough, you can risk throwing this important hormone out of balance Manage stress Although not directly, stress may have effects on bloating. Stress can influence certain hormones, which can in turn disrupt our menstrual cycle, which as we now know, can lead to bloating. However, stress may also lead to bloating and weight gain around the middle for other reasons. This is all part of a protective, evolutionary mechanism which is in place to ensure that a source of energy, is easily accessible, near the liver, for when it may be needed to be mobilised into energy. . . .
