19.01.2022 'Brimbank community saves $63M from pokie venue closures due to lockdown.' Since the Melbourne lockdown in late March 2020, an estimated $63.3 million has been saved from going into poker machines in Brimbank. Brimbank City Council has signed a joint letter to Premier Andrews requesting that gaming venues close between midnight and 10am, joining ten other councils.... Brimbank Mayor Cr Georgina Papafotiou said the COVID-19 shutdown of poker machines in Brimbank has provided unexpected financial reprieve for many households. The Alliance for Gambling Reform Chief Advocate, the Rev Tim Costello commented that 'it is absurd that poker machines are currently allowed on for 20 hours per day in Brimbank and throughout Victoria. Public health and addiction experts have been saying this is dangerous for years and it is time changes happened.' Brimbank topped the state in 2019 for pokies losses. The Dean Family who run the Morning Star Hotel, Williamstown, released a statement saying "the financial impact [of the Melbourne lockdowns] is simply too great". 08.01.2022 Today is the 50th anniversary of the West Gate Bridge Diasater, ‘the most tragic industrial accident in the history of Victoria’. At 11.50 am on 15 October 1970, a 112 m span of the West Gate Bridge collapsed during construction. Approximately 2000 tonnes of steel and concrete came crashing down into the banks of the Yarra below, taking workers and their machinery, tools and sheds with them. Thirty-five workers lost their lives that day, many others were injured. Victims were... those working on top of the bridge or having their lunch break below, at the time of the collapse. ‘Error begat error and the events which led to the disaster moved with the inevitability of a Greek Tragedy,’ reported the Royal Commission into the West Gate Bridge collapse. Building sites in Victoria stood in a minute silence today honour the workers who lost their lives and were injured fifty years ago and family and colleagues who have been affected to this day. 03.01.2022 New yogis on the the westie block, Assembly Yoga West Footscray put in a whole lot of elbow grease and just as much love to open their new yoga studio back in June. No sooner did they open the doors, the 3012 lockdown closed them again. Since then Assembly Yoga have had only 9 days opened and 130 days closed. Assembly Yoga is one of many local westside businesses opening back up this week due to lockdown restrictions being eased.
