24.01.2022 What are the hardest addictions to break? There is debate on what the most addictive substances are. So why the disparity and what can you do? There are the obvious and very visible, destructive addictions to illegal substances such as heroin and crystal meth, that can take hold of people and decimate their lives completely. But there are also the more insidious, but seemingly innocuous habits involving our phones or caffeine or sugar. So which are the hardest addictions to b...reak? Rats apparently find sugar more addictive than cocaine. Alcohol can be more harmful than crack or heroin. David Bowie found cigarettes harder to give up than any other drugs; Bowie’s wife Iman said, It was his last vice - he couldn’t stop. He said it was the hardest thing to give up. There is debate on what the most addictive substances are. American website the Addiction Center has heroin, alcohol and cocaine as their top three, followed by barbiturates and nicotine. But psychologist Stanton Peele writing in Psychology Today insisted everyday vices such as love, junk food and nicotine were worse. 20.01.2022 THE STAGES OF CHANGE AND ADDICTION! When people undertake change (especially in relation to addiction) it is known that there are five main stages. Pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. Behaviour change is a slow process and it is complex.... To undertake behaviour change a person needs to disrupt their current habits and adopt a new set of actions which are often unfamiliar and possibly uncomfortable. Studies have shown that making what might seem a simple change like drinking an extra cup of water per day, can take up to two months to become habit. One of the keys to successful change is how a person manages setbacks or relapses. How many of you have tried to undertake a set of New Year’s goals or changes and not stuck with it? Then you find yourself becoming critical of your ability and feeling like you have no willpower. Or you might look at someone else who is trying to make some changes and when they have a setback, you think they are lazy or stubborn or unwilling. Learning how to manage these setbacks is a huge part of our teachings as inevitably, setbacks happen but that doesn’t mean you turn around and head home. We will help you look at why the setback happened, what your triggers are and how, how to get back into the stages of change wheel and move forwards and how to self soothe in a positive and healthy way. The main stages of change are: PRE-CONTEMPLATIVE/UNAWARE (the ‘Nah not me’ stage) CONTEMPLATION (the ‘well maybe I might have a problem’ stage) PREPARATION (the ‘ ok so what do I do now’ stage) ACTION/TRYING (the ‘yes I’m going to do this’ stage) MAINTENANCE (the ‘ I can keep this up’ stage) Read the full article here: http://whitehavenclinic.com.au//the-stages-of-change-mode/

18.01.2022 HOW DO YOU RECOGNISE ADDICTION IN YOUR CHILDREN OR PARTNERS? It is very difficult to see someone we love self-destructing with their addiction. We often feel helpless as we watch them make poor choices and we often enable them even though we think we are doing the right thing. So how do you know if a loved one has an addiction issue if they can’t tell you themselves?... In the book Loving Our Addicted Daughters Back to Life by Linda Dahl, she shares the story of her daughter’s addiction, and how her family made it through their crisis. One thing she realized after the fact was that she saw signs of addiction in her daughter, but didn’t really recognize them for what they were. To help others who suspect their loved ones especially teens or young adults that may be addicted to drugs or alcohol, or at risk for addiction, We have put together this checklist of addiction signs and symptoms. If you recognize more than a few of them in your son or daughter, you may need to take action and get help for your family member. Smoking (Does this surprise you? Research consistently links smoking to depression, and depressed young people are more likely to turn to alcohol or other drugs.) Red, watery eyes, or heavy use of eye drops Shaking hands, feet, or head; lack of coordination, clumsiness, stumbling, or lack of balance Puffy face Paleness Vomiting Nausea Hacking Cough Runny nose (not from a cold or allergies) Read the full article on the link below or get in touch for more information on our private clinic services: The Whitehaven Clinic Phone : 1300 766 925 Email : [email protected] Location : Burswood http://whitehavenclinic.com.au//what-are-the-signs-of-add/

09.01.2022 One in eight Australians drinking alcohol every day during coronavirus outbreak, survey finds! "A new Alcohol and Drug Foundation survey has found one in eight Australians have been drinking every day since the coronavirus outbreak began. The foundation quizzed more than 1,000 people, with a concerning number reporting they were drinking more than usual.... One in 10 people reported consuming more than 10 standard drinks per week, increasing the risk of alcohol-related injury and diseases such as cancer.
