18.01.2022 Patanjali's Yoga Sutras: Defining the what, how, and why of asana practice. (Translation by Donna Farhi) II.46 Asana is the practice of remaining comfortably s...eated within the part of the self that is stable regardless of the position we find ourselves in. II.47 One embodies this steadfastness by focusing the mind on the neutral substratum underneath, inside of, and throughout the sensate experience of the body. II.48 The phenomenon of the inseparable opposites such as pain and pleasure, success and failure and heat and cold continue, yet we are no longer identified or unsettled by these dualities.

07.01.2022 For many months after the Christchurch earthquakes local yoga teachers would gather at my farm for a meal and afterwards listen to and reflect upon the blessing...s read by John O'Donohue from his extraordinary book To Bless the Space Between Us. This extract from the chapter "Thresholds" seems particularly relevant during this time: "To acknowledge and cross a new threshold is always a challenge. It demands courage and also a sense of trust in whatever is emerging. This becomes essential when a threshold opens suddenly in front of you, one for which you had no preparation. This could be illness, suffering, or loss. Because we are so engaged with the world, we usually forget how fragile life can be and how vulnerable we always are. It takes only a couple of seconds for a life to change irreversibly. Suddenly you stand on completely strange ground and a new course of life has to be embraced. Especially at such times we desperately need blessing and protection. You look back at the life you have lived up to a few hours before, and it suddenly seems so far away. Think for a moment how, across the world, someone's life has just changedirrevocably, permanently, and not necessarily for the betterand everything that was once so steady, so reliable, must now find a new way of unfolding. At any time you can ask yourself: At which threshold am I now standing? At this time in my life, what am I leaving? Where am I about to enter?"
