25.01.2022 The fight for the Bight is going from the beaches to the courtroom! Today, Wilderness Society SA announced legal proceedings in the Federal Court to challeng...e NOPSEMA’s approval of Equinor’s Environment Plan to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight. We're up against a government and business with deep pockets. You can help. Donate today wilderness.org.au/donate-bight-case To be clear, this is not a step we wanted to have to take - however this legal case is extremely important. When NOPSEMA the government regulator for offshore oil drilling approved Equinor’s Environment Plan, it set a deeply concerning precedent. That failing to formally consult environment groups, key Indigenous groups & local governments is ok. We are concerned that future projects could: ignore the perspective and interests of Traditional Custodiansputting cultural heritage at tremendous risk. dismiss the impacts these projects have on the functions and interests of environment organisations that represent people like you to protect our climate, wilderness ecosystems and our southern oceansas well as the communities and marine life that depend on them to survive. exclude local governments that are responsible for the people, places and infrastructure most likely to be impacted. This case is about the law. But this campaign is also about much more than that. It is about big businesses and government not listening to the tens of thousands of Australians who don’t want oil drilling in the Bightwho have protested at beaches across the country, donated, written submissions, and called on their decision-makers and Equinor to keep Big Oil out of the Bight for good. This isn’t a battle that is won in a day. This is an ongoing, long-term fight. Please donate $15 today to join the thousands of others who know what has happened here isn’t right. wilderness.org.au/donate-bight-case **If you are on a laptop - use the donate link in the comments below!! #fightforthebight #bigoildontsurf #nowaynorway #greataustralianbight Our lawyers -Environmental Defenders Office

24.01.2022 Equinor has announced that it will abandon its plans to drill in the Great Australian Bight. This is a huge result for local communities, traditional owners ...and everyone who has had their voices heard. The people have clearly demonstrated they want the Bight protected from oil drilling and it is time for the Australian Government to provide permanent protection. Learn more: wilderness.org.au/equinor_pulls_out This result would not have been possible without the communities and organisations that came together to #fightforthebight as a part of the Great Australian Bight Alliance Thank you Surfrider Foundation Australia, Patagonia, The Wilderness Society South Australia , Sea Shepherd Australia and so many more local community groups, traditional owners, local councils and people right across Australia!

24.01.2022 The Narrabri gas project threatens the living culture of Gamilaraay peoples. Santos’ plan is to drill 850 wells through the recharge zone of the Great Artesian Basin in the precious Pilliga Forest. We’re now at the last step before approval for Santos’ plan to plunder 850 coal seam gas (CSG) wells through the recharge zone of the Great Artesian Basin in the precious Pilliga forest. The Wilderness Society Illawarra is running an online submission workshop on July 13 from 6pm ...to take a stand against this incredibly risky gas project. RSVP to join the action via: wilderness.nationbuilder.com/syd_illawarra_pilliga_sub_work While we’re all doing our best to support our community and keep each other safe and healthythe NSW government, with increased pressure from the Morrison Government, is trying to sweep through climate wrecking projects under cover of a national health emergency. There is widespread opposition to the Narrabri gas project97% of the local community say NO to Pilliga CSG & tens of thousands of Australians have already voiced their concerns about this project with a record breaking 22,700 formal objections in 2017.

15.01.2022 Now is a perfect time to let Minister Melissa Price know about what you think: http://bit.ly/2r8JXUI The Federal Govt has admitted a legal error was made in deciding to assess the Kingvale deforestation proposal at the least rigorous method of assessment. The Kingvale proposal is for nearly 2,000 hectares of old growth forest next to a river running into the Great Barrier Reef. The government must now reconsider how the environmental effects of the project are to be assessed, which could range from a full environmental impact statement to a public inquiry.
