23.01.2022 We are launching a side project "In Your Space" today inspired by the 16 days of activism and want you to get involved We have started a facebook group to discuss and share images & positive imagery that exists in our public spaces imagery that increases the likelihood of womens inclusion and participation in public life. We will create an image repository as a template for change in our streets. Your actions will build community capacity to nurture respectful relationship...s and promote inclusive local environments that recognise women and the myriad of roles they play in these communities and the broader society. Addressing violence against women is not a private matter but a community responsibility. The streets are awash with demeaning sexualised imagery of women - frequently displayed for commercial gain our dream is that this homogenised, airbrushed, photo-shopped and frequently menacing imagery will be pasted, stencilled and painted over with imagery that depicts women in more realistic and interesting ways and that public spaces will become more accessible and welcoming for all who inhabit them. So our call out is to facilitate and support women artists to go out and cover the streets. link in profile for more info on how to get involved Image: Frida Kahlo & Malala Yousafzai paste ups, unknown artist, Photo:Sally Northfield #inyourspace #feminisim #safespaces #streetart #everydaywomen

18.01.2022 From Bomboniere to Barbed Wire was a mural by and about women. It began with community consultations in 1984, with artists Eve Glenn and Megan Evans speaking to and photographing women in Northcote and Fitzroy over several months. These consultations then became the basis and inspiration for the enormous 150 metre Womens Mural painted on the wall at the Smith Street Gas & Fuel Building. The mural was completed in 1986. As the artists stated in their 1986 project report T...he overwhelming impression we were left with after two months was a sense of the individual strength and personal resilience of the women we met. Soon you will be able to read more about the history of the Womens Mural and how it was created when we launch Re-imagining the Womens Mural a virtual tour. Here are some images of some of the local women who featured on the mural. #thewomensmuraldocproject #thewomensmural #streetartmelbourne #mural #melbournemural #smithstreet #feminist #feministmural #meganevansartist #eveglennartist #herplace #wmnhist #OrangeTheWorld #GenerationEquality #16days

17.01.2022 Thanks so much to everyone who made it down to our launch event Thursday at Her Place Museum! As Megan Evans said, Although done a long time ago, the Womens Mural is a time capsule of issues that still resonate today. Sadly, it is still a remarkable event to privilege women in any sphere.Thats what I think we did back in the 1980s. If you missed the launch don't worry you can still have a look at Re-imagining the Women's Mural a virtual tour here: http://www.the-womens...-mural-doc-project.com.au/virtualtour What issues do you think still resonate? #thewomensmuraldocproject #thewomensmural #streetartmelbourne #mural #melbournemural #smithstreet #feminist #feministmural #meganevansartist #eveglennartist #herplace #wmnhist #OrangeTheWorld #GenerationEquality #16days

Dont forget to RSVP here https://bit.ly/2rHlzNx if you would like to join us at our launch event, at Her Place Museum which takes place during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. As we reflect on the murals lifespan and connection to the local community, we thought we would share some before and after images of Jenny Kleftogiannis and Sofie Hendrickse, who featured on the or...iginal mural, as well as on the fabulous 2016 Melbourne International Arts Festival art tram, Womens Mural- Retro-Recycle-Rebirth, designed by Eve Glenn and Megan Evans, which travelled across tracks until April 2017. Mary Stuart, Chair of Her Place Womens Museum Australia said the Womens Mural was a significant Melbourne landmark, The Womens Mural remains a symbolic site for many people and its defacement in 2016 galvanised public support for this important public artwork.
