18.01.2022 Together with The Leg Club Network, The Wound Guy has started a collaborative partnership with health-shared.com, a Web App created by doctors from Imperial College London, to develop a virtual ‘Community of Practice’. As a partners, the Leg Club Network and The wound Guy Community hopes to make information for and about people with lower limb conditions more accessible. health-shared.com, was developed by a group of consultant vascular surgeons including Mr Usman Jaffer and... Professor Alun Davies of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, who wanted the voice and expertise of the patient to be better represented in healthcare information. Partnerships were established with key healthcare stakeholders so that relevant and engaging communities could be created as part of the Web App. The communities allow users to obtain information from a reliable, quality assured, online resource which has been established by healthcare providers and other people who have been in the same situation. The person-centred, interactive, App is based on a ‘Community of Practice’ model (CoP) which allows users to personalise and curate their content and share their stories and experiences online. Users can search community portals relevant to their condition for information, get answers to their questions from experienced healthcare partners and discuss their own experiences. The Leg Club Network manages and supports two of these community portals: The Leg Club Community, which focuses on the Leg Club model of care, and The Leg Club Support Community, which aims to support issues from a sociological aspect, loneliness and isolation. The Wound Guy focuses on practical advice for patients , carers and clinicians. In addition to providing information for the App, the Leg Club Network is supporting health-shared.com to engage with patients, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Vascular and Venous disease and the Self-Care Academic Research Unit (SCARU) at Imperial College London (led by Dr Austen El-Osta) to investigate the extent that CoPs can help patient activation, supported self-management and, ultimately, improved quality of life and clinical outcomes. Ellie Lindsay OBE, Lifetime President of the Lindsay Leg Club Foundation said: The last year has made us all reflect on how we communicate and reach out to people and as a result the Leg Club Network is working hard to increase its online presence. health-shared.com is the perfect platform for us to utilise and share the work we have created with a virtual Leg Club community and beyond and we are delighted to be a partner in this project. The Wound Guy entity extends our sincere thanks to Ellie Lindsay OBE and Mr Usman Jaffer for their invitation to participate in this Community of Practice venture. https://health-shared.com/ You can sign up either as a healthcare professional or patient here: https://health-shared.com/

11.01.2022 Radiation skin reaction and using a moisturiser ... Dr Dianne Smith recently wrote about the skin care challenges that individuals face when receiving radiation therapy. Around 95% of people who have radiation will experience an inflammatory skin reaction. Dr Smith states that skin affected by radiotherapy has a tendency to dryness due to radiation ablation of the sebaceous glands. The skin becomes itchy, flaky and structurally weaker which renders it more prone to minor t...rauma and infection. Paraffin based moisturisers are recommended to try and preserve skin hydration. Aqueous creams should be avoided - especially if they contain sodium lauryl sulphate. Smith,D Radiotherapy-induced skin reaction. Lymph Exchange 2019;Feb:8-9.
