25.01.2022 The savannah is roamed by beautiful giraffes. Boring sentence right? Lets compare it to this one: Beautiful giraffes roamed the savannah. Better? Thats because it uses the active voice. ~ ~ When I first started writing I always got stuck using the passive (boring) voice - and still do sometimes - this checklist helps me edit my work when I slip into old habits. ~... ~ The key to writing in the active voice is putting the subject BEFORE the object. ~ ~ The active voice: Puts the subject before the object so: subject > verb > object Makes content clearer Shortens sentences Emphasises customer focus ~ ~ In comparison the passive voice: Puts the object before the subject so: object > verb > subject Clutters up the content Makes sentences long and harder to read Devalues the customer/misses the point ~ ~ Some non-exotic animal examples: ~ ~ Active - Susan changed the flat tire. Passive - The flat tire was change by Susan ~ ~ Active - The forest fire destroyed the whole suburb. Passive - The whole suburb was destroyed by the forest fire ~ ~ When editing your copy remember: subject > verb > object ~ ~ Make active voice your bitch, and youll write better, more cohesive and engaging copy See more

19.01.2022 Do the words very and really sneak in to your writing? Do this and that make your sentences longer? Why use two words when one will do Something as simple as cutting out those unnecessary in-between words can make your copy sharper, cleaner and snappier p.s. Dead Poets bringing the goods decades later

15.01.2022 Ever feel like youre stuck in a rut with content? . Dont know what to write about or what kind of topics to cover on your blog? . The easiest way to come up with unique and relevant content for your audience is to consider what problems they face on the daily ... . For example, do your clients struggle with their nutrition? Why not jot down a few recurring themes clients ask about? . For example: How to calculate your macros How much protein should you be eating in a day? How to read food labels Meal prep ideas for the busy work week ahead What to eat before and after training . And thats just a handful of examples from a common issue clients face . Next time youre stuck for words, try brainstorming. . Before you know if youll have a bunch of ideas to write interesting and most of all ENGAGING blogs that your clients will want to read because theyre learning, and getting VALUE from it . Try it and see how many ideas you can come up with! See more

13.01.2022 You know how they say you should never meet your heroes because youll just end up disappointed? Well, its true Tonight I went to see Sir Michael Parkinson and I came away with a bitter feeling in the pit of my stomach.... As a journalist I have always enjoyed Parkys interviews and his way with people but hearing more of his own stories and thoughts I discovered that underneath it all, Parky is an old white guy whos kind of racist. And that saddened me. To a room of predominantly old white people, Parky referred to England as an old country and Australia a young one - England as ancient and Australia as new. Not once did he mention the traditional owners of this land or acknowledge the indigenous peoples of Australia. This matters for two reasons. One - referring to Australia as young implies there was nothing here pre-colonisation and perpetuates the cycle of racism and widens the gap between Indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. It validates the terra nullius idea that any culture that was here before the white man is not worth mentioning. Two - a simple welcome to country from a famous and highly regarded old white man from the colonising nation would have shown respect to the indigenous peoples of Australia and could have opened the door a tiny crack into reconciliation from a predominantly old white and privileged audience. For the remainder of his tour I would love to see #sirmichaelparkinson acknowledge #indigenousaustralians with a #welcometocountry - wouldnt you?

09.01.2022 I have no idea who made this but how amazing is the evolution of the English language! . Slang can be fantastic tool when used in the right way . I even started using af in my weekly newsletter for work and have yet to receive one complaint asking what it means ... . If I can be sassy af, add some attitude to my writing AND get away with it - thats a win in my book See more

08.01.2022 It hurts the eyes and it hurts my soul when I see a big old blob of text. No one wants to read that. . We are visual animals. We need short, sharp sentences. . Breaking your post into paragraphs, headings and dot points will stop me (and your customers) skimming over your content like a cat on a hot tin roof.... . Beyond adding an eye-catching image to break it up, I like to use these formatting tools: . Headings & Subheadings . - This helps organize the content of your blog. - A customer skimming over can easily see the topics covered (and so can search engines!) . Dot Points & Lists . - Listicles are the way to go people! It doesnt matter if its a: 1. Number, 2. A bullet point or; 3. Or a random shape. . There will be more white space on the page drawing the readers eye to the information you want them to see! Plus its so nice and orderly. . Highlighting Points . - Bold those important points! - Hyperlink to add some authority to your words (and give your reader the opportunity to delve deeper into the topic). - Or use my favourite tool of all, the good old em dash. . . If you want people to actually read your blog, youve got to make it as visually appealing as possible so break your text into bite-sized pieces! . ^ See how adding a sassy em dash emphasises my point? 07.01.2022 Try to write how you speak It sounds simple but its true. Were not monosyllabic, we dont speak in five words per sentence. ... We emphasise certain words and chose language to suit our style AND our audience. We pause to make a point or wait for a reaction - just like in real world conversations. How would you speak to a friend about a topic? Next time youre writing copy try a more conversational tone and let me know how you go!

06.01.2022 This morning a colleague reminded me about a sassy weekly newsletter I used to write when I worked on the Australian Education Reporter and I have to say I really miss the tongue-in-cheek style of writing. . I dont know about you but Im much more likely to read a news story with a bit of character and a custom meme thrown in (credit to Moe Aung for his meme wizardry ). . P.S. I believe Dan Tehan has since updated his website.

03.01.2022 Ever make a mistake because you forgot to ask a vital question? I have . Even though I felt like an ABSOLUTE NUGGET this was a good learning curve and promoted me to revamp my client questionnaire and pepper briefs with extra questions - even if I think its a daft thing to ask! . Hopefully going forward I can avoid making silly mistakes because I felt silly asking a question ... . Anyone else make a daft mistake like this? Bet you havent made it since! See more

01.01.2022 What sets you apart from other trainers and coaches? Why do people train with you? . There are soooooo many options out there! To stand out in the crowd you need to communicate how unique your service is to potential members. . Maybe someone else has the same equipment as you but the location isnt as good. Or maybe you have a crèche and they dont. Or your trainers are always learning to keep classes fresh and challenging. Maybe you offer almost exactly the same thing but yo...ur staff are customer service super stars and actually give a shit about your members! . Whatever that magical point of difference is - that shiny fact should be front and centre in your socials, copy and any channel where you engage with your community . So tell me, what makes you stand out?? See more
