14.01.2022 "They Built Wooden Boats" A brief history of boat building in Paynesville celebrates the skills, craftsmanship and resourcefulness of the early boat builders. A full copy of the 124 page book written by Peter Stokes and Bruce Reynolds is now available for fellow boating enthusiasts to download and enjoy.... Since 1878, the year that Paynesville was first settled as a fisherman’s camp, many wooden boats have been built here. The book (formerly the Directory of Paynesville Boat Builders and Wooden Boats) shines a light on Paynesville’s boat building pioneers through their remarkable stories, and connects them to just some of the vessels they built. Some of the vessels mentioned have long since disappeared, but fortunately for us, many have survived, including a growing number that have been lovingly restored to their former glory and again treasured by their owners. Many members of the community have generously provided much of the information contained in this book. Special thanks go to Bryan James, Peter Bull, Marion Day, Mervyn Day, Leigh Robinson, Ian Wilson, Lindsay Wilson, Kim Bull, Ray Neill and Peter Medling.
