25.01.2022 When a child makes a mistake when reading WE TEACH When a child makes a mistake with behaviour WE PUNISH (Renee Knapp, Think Effective Consultancy)... Too often, our School Behaviour Plans are focused only on how we will reward and punish suitable and poor behaviour. However, we need to consider how to change a child’s behaviour or how to teach them essential skills in order to make better choices. We can do this by engaging students in teachable moments and by providing an opportunity for students to correct their behaviour through conflict resolution, anger management and emotional check ins and labelling, to mention just a few strategies. What opportunities for teachable moments do you have in your school whether it is face to face or virtual? http://thinkeffective.com.au//implementing-behaviour-init/

23.01.2022 When beginning any new initiative or change in schools, it is essential to bring everyone along on the journey. Whilst it is important to recognise that there will always be resistance when there is change, we can minimise this when staff are a valued part of the process and have input into key decisions. With something as important as behaviour on the agenda, it is crucial to have a team approach to ensure buy-in from staff. Setting up an effective team can mean the differen...ce between success or failure. It is imperative to spend time ensuring that you have all the elements of a successful team before you move forward to implementing change. I believe, from my own experience as a Chairperson and Coordinator for numerous teams, that there are a few important things to include to ensure success for your team: # Having a Clear vision & use of an Implementation Ladder approach # Effective processes and strategies within the meetings to ensure you are achieving progress each meeting # Enjoyable/positive meetings as well as productive # Use of consensus strategies for decision making to ensure all voices are heard. What challenges have you faced as working teams when trying to implement change? Read more here... http://thinkeffective.com.au//importance-of-a-working-team/

13.01.2022 Very excited to be attending #RRMH Have just participated in the first presentation 'Rural Adversity and Mental Health: Better Understanding for Improved Wellbeing’. Was a very valuable session highlighting the work to be done in moving forward with mental health planning in rural areas. I feel passionately that we need to develop a planned cross-sector approach to mental health. This has largely been my role as Chair & co-founder for a Community Mental Health Action Team.... We have created an opportunity for educators, health agencies, law enforcement and private and community associations to work together to improve mental health in our rural area. We have recently worked with the Mental Health Commission to write a Community wellbeing plan to create specific outcomes targeting the needs of our context and target groups. Tomorrow I will be presenting a session on the benefits and development of a community approach to mental health. Click here to read my latest blog post about how to take your school behaviours and create a positive school culture that can form the foundation for good relationships, connection and belonging.

08.01.2022 I was recently given the opportunity to be part of the Mental Health Commission Young People’s Priority Framework Consultation Workshops to Guide and inform the development of the 2020-2025 Framework. We explored the proposed vision, key gaps and opportunities for change in the current system and key initiatives and strategies to be delivered. It was such a great opportunity to discuss potential changes and improvements to the system and gave me a chance to reflect on my vi...ews on this. I feel very passionately that we need a collaborate and planned approach to mental health across Australia. I think we need key frameworks and pathways as to how sectors and services can work together to achieve change. I believe for our youth, Education provide a perfect mainstreamed opportunity to make changes happen with regard to awareness, prevention, early identification and support. But I believe that if govt sectors such as education, police and health agencies work together we can achieve better outcomes in this area. It allows us to look beyond our school walls and consider all that is going on for a student. Creating an integrated approach allows us to support each other in delivery, lesson our loads while allowing organisations to focus on their strengths and ensure an integrated approach. This not only benefits for our youth, but also the wider community. #mentalhealth #thinkeffectiveconsultancy #thinkeffective #youngpeople #changemakers #ruralmentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters

08.01.2022 It is essential to have a clear vision and set of goals when implementing change. This is not only important as the Coordinator/Chairperson of a committee or area of improvement, but also allows the whole team and staff to keep track of progress and see where you are heading. It keeps you focused as a team when trying to organise meetings and helps to ensure that nothing gets overlooked. I always use an Implementation Checklist whenever I lead a team and have found this to be... critical to success. What tools do you use in order to guide your implementation? http://thinkeffective.com.au//use-of-an-implementation-la/
