25.01.2022 DETAILS MATTER Some detail photos of the underwater lighting fixtures installed in our Nannup recreation swimming pond project Many of these rocks had natural holes in them so the guys have used that to advantage installing and foaming low voltage underwater lights in place into them. ... And they have hidden the aeration diffuser in the log on the bottom of the pond. 23.01.2022 NANNUP SWIMPOND 3 DAYS ON Slowly clearing! Thanks to our lovely clients for these update photos three days on from completing this swimming pond project for them. ... Visibility to about 700-800mm. Not bad for just a few days of filtration running after the dust from the 40+ tons of rocks, gravel and river pebble we put in there. Should have visibility to the bottom by the weekend, then just get clearer and clearer over the next few weeks. 22.01.2022 POND REBUILD Yesterday the guys started a pond rebuild project in Roleystone. The demolition was somewhat hard going but they got it done. You never know what youre going to find when you start digging. Concrete pond with carpet underlay. Stormwater pipes underneath that werent even quite joined together but were still working well nonetheless. and a window support steel that was no longer up to the job. (Yes this pond comes into partnof the the house under a big window!)... Moving along now though! 21.01.2022 IT’S CLEAR. that recreation swimming ponds are the way of the future. Natural filtration through a constructed wetland filter works amazing well. We built this swimming pond down in Nannup a few months ago and there was a lot of fine bentonite clay in and on the very-local rocks we used to build it. That gave the water a gray/white bentonite tint usually seen in bentonite clay lined dams. Even in a still clay dam it never fully settles out,... It has taken a few months, but now even that fine suspended bentonite looks to be gone. Filtered out. Naturally. Check out the clarity! The weather has been far from friendly but weve been getting it done. Pretty happy with the timber Pinelap fencing. 16.01.2022 Nannup Day 1 Big morning on the road then unload and check out the pond site and talk the guys through the plan. Picked up a few loads of very local rocks from just one street (probably less than 1km) away. ... Discovered some awesome MOSS on the property where were building the recreation pond. Mossy ground. Mossy rocks. And mossy logs. Well be using some of these for sure!! We love moss. It does such a great job of naturalising and aging a waterscape project. And very importantly had a great lunch home made by our lovely clients - thanks Maggie and met some of the local blue wrens. Raining tomorrow but well be digging anyway, shaping up this recreation pond and getting liner and geotextile in. Time for some sleep now though

14.01.2022 Nannup Day 2 Morning GET ON THE LEVEL A cold and dark start at Nannup today. ... First task for the day. Levels. Finding and setting the water level and bank height is essential in any pond but especially in a big one. Water is unforgiving and will find its own level, flooding and washing out any low edges. So thats step one once youve selected the location. Get on the level!

So we’re under-cutting the rocks we’re placing along the pool beam so that a part of the rock hangs down over the edge and partly hides the pool edge giving the impression the rocks are embedded into the pool edge. ... 11.01.2022 LAKE AND DAM RENOVATIONS Can I turn my existing dam or lake into a natural swimming pond is something I get asked a lot! The short answer is usually yes. But the long answer involves a lot of questions and answers back and forth as not all dams are created equally. Or even close to equally as it turns out.... One of the biggest considerations is always client budget. While it might seem like this kind of conversion should be easy, straightforward and not very expensive that is really rarely the case. Most lakes and dams Ive been asked to look at are big, earth-bottomed, shaped like a bowl and often filled by uncontrolled (and uncontrollable) runoff. This can create a lot of issues that need to be considered and dealt with. I like to think of a dam or lake renovation in three parts. 1. Filtration 2. Water holding ability 3. Aesthetics The trifecta will give you an AMAZING natural swimming lake. Often the size of the existing lake or dam is just all too much for the available budget to achieve the trifecta in a big lake or dam if all three parts need to be addressed. And lets face it. Realistically how many people actually need a 500m2 or more recreational swimming lake in their backyard? Just because there is a dam already there doesnt mean its the only option. Often its more sensible and economical to build a stand alone, close-to-the-house, easy to maintain, purpose built human scale recreation pond for swimming and just to improve one or two parts of the lake or dam to make it more aesthetically pleasing or more suitable for your own functional needs whether that is kayaking, fishing or even just better water holding capacity for irrigation. Theres no need for an irrigation pond to be ugly. Ive just put together a page on our website with an outline of various lake renovation options and whats involved with them. And importantly some budget guide ranges for these various parts if addressed individually. Of course there is some crossover and economies of scale if addressing two or all three at the same time. 11.01.2022 STONEVILLE RECREATION POND A few months on and settling in well. Looking just beautiful in the mid afternoon light with seasonal colouring tree reflections. Theres a bit of string algae which is to be expected in the early stages of a naturally filtered pond and is a great sign that we are establishing a healthy ecosystem in the pond.... The water parameters have all tested great though and its crystal clear. Happy fish. Our local mains water is causing some low alkalinity that we need to artificially raise to help control the string algae. Probably a bit cold to swim in at the moment in a Perth winter but how much more beautiful would this be in your garden than a stock standard swimming pool? 06.01.2022 GOANNA GOLF Yesterday we did a drop in visit to the ponds and streams we built at Point Walter Golf Course earlier this year. The course has been open nearly a month now and the water quality of the ponds, waterfalls and streams is really great. ... The water and filtration systems here are from Aquascape Australia and provide both physical and biological filtration to mimic nature through an upflow wetland filter and biofalls encouraging beneficial bacteria habitat. Importantly they are low maintenance and doing a fantastic job. They can also be retrofitted to an existing water system so if you know of a commercial pond or stream system that doesnt have water quality like this please share or tag them in a comment below. 04.01.2022 SWIMPOND REVISIT I had a quick drop in to Stoneville today while up the hill collecting plants from Water Greens for our pond rebuild project in Roleystone. So i thought Id drop in and check to see how the swimming pond was coming along and to check the water chemistry. ... Its looking great! Crystal clear. A bit of string algae especially in the wetlands filter part (last photo) which is the nutrient sink for this pond. Pretty happy with this given the time of year and that most of the water plants are dormant over winter. When the plants start to spring to life as the weather warms up, they will start to outcompete the algae. The thing to remember in ponds like this is that were recreating an ecosystem. So there will be some algae in the pond for the first couple of years - as there is in nature. But the plants will mature and outcompete it for nutrients. I once heard someone say about water plants. First year they sleep Second year they creep Third year they LEAP! 03.01.2022 ESTABLISHED POND & STREAM Mike did a quick visit to our Gnangara clients this afternoon. They were having some trouble with low flow through the biofalls filter in their pond and if you scroll through to the last photo youll see why! This pond is under a lot of trees so a lot of leaves and twigs fall into it so the skimmer coarse filter mat needs regular cleaning and over time had split and broken a bit letting through more debris than it should to the pumps. All fixed now ...with a brand new mat so should be good for a while now The pond and plants are really starting to mature here now and looking great. Mike filmed a short video walkthrough too with all the great sounds of the waterfalls and bird life. There will be a couple of session times (by bookings only) on Saturday 12th September with a walkthrough talk by me explaining the Aquascape Australia recreation swimming pond system and how it all works. Followed by a walk and talk by Dr Bob through t...heir amazing food forest. This is our third recreation swimming pond in Western Australia and this is a great opportunity to see one up close and in person and to be able to ask all about it from the builder. 01.01.2022 POINT WALTER MINI GOLF COMPLETE Weve just done a follow up visit to the mini golf course at Point Walter Golf Course in Bicton, Western Australia. This is the first Aquascape Australia system weve built using natural weathered limestone rock and boulders. We did expect a fairly high pH and high alkalinity kH but these levels are spot on neutral ... The whole system is running so well and is crystal clear. 01.01.2022 NANNUP SWIMPOND PROGRESS Getting close now. The guys have made great progress so far this week Onto the upflow wetland filter tomorrow after a little more rock work. ... Theyve hidden the aeration diffuser in the log on the bottom of the swim area in the pond. Should look interesting when its all running Decorative Southwest Riverstone now covers the cracked aggregate we used as backfill to stabilise our rocks.
