19.01.2022 Sports Nutrition Series: While deficiencies in some minerals can have a detrimental effect on health and on athletic performance, the use of mineral supplements (including multivitamins/mineral supplements) by athletes or physically active individuals who consume well-balanced diets, with appropriate caloric intake, appears to be unnecessary. The only well documented exception is for iron-deficiency (particularly in female athletes), where the anaemia is readily reversed by iron supplementation. This series will look at the use of three minerals/metals, vanadium, chromium and zinc, which have been previously touted as mineral supplements for athletes, particularly in regard to their potential use to build lean muscle mass.

19.01.2022 Sports Nutrition Series: Is there Evidence? Mineral 2: Chromium Holding peak body composition is necessary for elite competitive performance. Previous research has indicated that males and females (25 to 36 yrs) prescribed 400 micrograms of chromium picolinate (16 weeks) is capable of having a significant effect on lean body mass (2.1 kilograms and 1.8 kilograms respectively). However, the foregoing research has been largely scrutinized for poor methodology, and rightly so. H...owever, follow up research on chromium picolinate has shown the following: Football players (similar height and weight, important) using 200 micrograms of Chromium Picolinate daily for 42 days experienced a 2.7 percent reduction in percentage body fat and a 1.8 kilogram increase in lean muscle mass after 14 days compared to placebo. Both groups completed the same level frequency and type of training i.e 1 hour, 4 times per week. This was despite the same training regime for both the chromium and control group. Verdict: Perhaps something to discuss with your health care practitioner.

15.01.2022 Sports Nutrition Series: Is there Evidence? Mineral 1: Vanadium: Can I use this to Enhance Sports Performance? Vanadium has never been shown to have any effects on body composition or muscle mass development. Clinical studies with vanadium are limited in number and have generally been linked to diabetic subjects. For example, vanadyl sulfate (75 mg or 150 mg daily) has been shown to have a statistically significant improvement in fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin.... Nonetheless, all studies examining vanadium for reducing blood glucose levels reported a high incidence of gastrointestinal side effects. Recent literature examining the impact of vanadium chelate complex on blood glucose, shown that the compound was consistently well tolerated compared to the vanadyl sulfate. Verdict: There is currently no double blind placebo controlled trials or trials large enough to support the use of vanadium in regulating blood glucose for athletes.
