25.01.2022 Merri Creek House - HHR - 2020: This project is located on a tree-lined street in Melbourne’s Fitzroy North, peppered with cream and apricot double-storey triple brick veneer many with deco waterfall edges and glamorous garages, with roof decks above that connect to contribute to a grand entry sequence. One might ascend the stairs and drink martinis on the terrace before moving through a curved glass threshold front door to the parlour. Wanting to replicate this contextual ...romance, Merri Creek House mirrors this with its street-facing deck above the garage. Circular turrets cascade along the site. WOWOWA’s fascination with geometric farm relics and tall brick water structures has informed the double-height towers for living. Merri Creek House is made up of two turrets the front one split into rumpus below and study above, the middle turret housing the dining table and sweeping décolletage staircase. The final turret is deconstructed, likened to an eroding ruin approaching the creek abutting the site. A giant, curved window cuts the surface and looks out towards an old magnolia tree. The most playful moments are the spaces between the tall turrets, as the home winds and twists to provide the amenity required in any workhorse family project. This colourful home feels both nostalgic and contemporary, adorned with yellow and white awnings. Inside and out, the copper trims and pink marble render are an ideal match with the apricot brick. 19.01.2022 SON - HHR - 2020: This addition to the rear of a single-storey character bungalow in South Australia’s Henley Beach shifts out to maximise its northern exposure while directing the program and flow to the west. The form explores cohesion and reinterpretation of the existing visual language, mimicking the elevation proportions of the existing residence while moving in and out, creating a plan that responds directly from the internal use to the external spaces. As ...the form moves to the rear, a double-height volume rakes outward, pulling the kitchen, dining and living spaces together. Controlled high-level openings allow light to spill through the space. Slotted at mid-height, a privatised timber jewel is suspended, providing additional workspace while giving intimacy to the lounge below. A combination of brickwork connects the old to new along with a low datum. At the same time, vertical profiled cladding wraps above, blurring the building line while emphasising the mid-suburban coastal location. The incorporation of brickwork was an essential material choice. Aesthetically, it allowed the architects to transition a material datum that was researched and mapped from the existing heritage form and to continue it through the addition. The use of recycled-look brick allowed the architects to subtly offset and abstract the rhythm and aesthetics of the existing heritage reds, without being in full contrast. 16.01.2022 Rushall Park Independent Living Units - HHC - 2020: Rushall Park in Melbourne’s North Fitzroy is a unique village of diminutive duplexes and single dwellings, with architectural styles from almost every decade since 1870. Its last remaining sliver of land running the length of the site abutting a suburban rail line was to play host to three new, three-storey apartment buildings that had to coexist with their characterful neighbours while contributing to th...e elusive magic of the park as a whole. In celebrating the brick, the new additions to Rushall Park achieved just that. Rather than embellish entire facades, the design features areas expressed as large circular spots of heightened materiality and impressive craftsmanship. The spots are scattered across the facades, which are otherwise made up of Bowral Bricks Dry Pressed Simmental Silver and Brahman Granite bricks. Each spot contains a number of clovers, arrangements of two special shapes and two out-turned brick ends, the latter polished. Along with the distinctive shadows that form across the facade, the polished faces scatter light and reflection, animating the building. 14.01.2022 The Good Life House - HHR - 2020: The Good Life House is a suburban home located in Melbourne’s Fairfield, designed for a family of five. While clearly contemporary in form and materiality, the house is complementary to the older homes that it sits amongst. The design was informed by the clients’ exploration of different lifestyle options prior to deciding to build, including farming, or purchasing an Alistair Knox-designed house in Eltham. They chose instead to continue livi...ng close to the city and to be a part of the community in Fairfield. Californian Bungalow and Arts and Crafts houses with hip and gable roof forms dominate the streetscape and are an important reference for how this new house fits in with its established neighbours. Materials were selected for their thermal performance, low maintenance, durability and character. Along with the varied ceiling heights and window types, the materials assist in creating rooms with individual style and personality. The reverse brick veneer construction ties together nostalgia of a client’s childhood home with a desire for a high-performing thermal environment. The selected brick blend adds a unique character to the interior that complements the exposed timber, contributing to the creation of an interior that is thermally stable and visually warm. 14.01.2022 Town Hall Hotel Waratah - HHC - 2020: The Town Hall Hotel is a heritage-listed building in Waratah, New South Wales, dating back to 1866. The project brief was to retain the legacy of The Townie as a locals’ pub but inject enough style to open up the venue to a new kind of patron. The response to the brief was to open up the public bar while retaining the cosy atmosphere and respecting the site’s 153-year history. The hotel had a lot of redeeming features, but also a lot of... very poor additions. Part of the existing bullnose verandah has been cut back to align with the existing two-storey hotel. This signifies the original heritage hotel and creates a demarcation between the old and the new. An addition to the east containing a new gaming room has been created from masonry, paying homage to the existing brick hotel through materiality. The designers were conscious of the large scale and flat nature of this wall, so proposed the length be broken by expressed header bricks, designed to play with the ever-changing light through shadows cast onto the wall. A hit-and-miss brickwork screen has been incorporated for a couple of reasons: to reduce the bulk and scale of the brick wall and create a glow at night, illuminated by the interior lights of the open-roof gaming room behind. 13.01.2022 Sunny House - HHR - 2020: Sunny House is a new family home on a sloping site in suburban Brisbane. Functionality and materials are organised as a vertical stack to preserve a large area for landscape and outdoor activity. The site fall suggested a heavyweight base anchored to the site, tucking car accommodation into the slope. Brick walls emphasise the mass and extend outwards to frame landscape territories, while over-scaled house numbers formed by cut bricks add a rugged ye...t playful detail. The middle level contains shared spaces, emphasising openness to the rear lawn and the panoramic view at the front; this suggested the centre cleaving a gap between the brick base and a lightweight top spanning above. The project’s geometric language makes abstract references to the neighbouring 1930s English Revival house, while also referencing the eclectic details of 1970s suburban brick homes. The neighbour’s gable incorporates bricks that step outward as they rise, so the architects introduced a wall adjacent to the entry where staggering brick angles down, transitioning the building to the site. In response to the neighbour’s brick arched entry door, the architects expanded the scale to create a brick arched garage opening. The clients were enthusiastic about the colour variety of recycled brick blends, however, the design response was to blend new bricks to get the colour combination desired. The architects also worked with the manufacturer on a custom flash firing process to achieve detail-scaled colour variety within the bricks. 13.01.2022 Breezebrick Courtyard House - HHR - 2020: Breezebrick Courtyard House is comprised of a new extension and a renovated 1960s home in suburban Brisbane. The original structure was the ugly duckling in the streetscape, however, the owners wished to avoid demolition, preferring for it to reach its potential. Mottled red brickwork was their favourite element of the existing structure, so the design encompassed changes that would draw the existing brickwork into a new set of ideas.... A key organising device is a brick basket that frames a territory occupied by internal and external spaces. This element is about the same size as the existing house and incorporates the bricks at the rear of the existing house as one of its sides. One half of the extension footprint is occupied by internal spaces that follow on from the shared spaces within the existing dwelling. The brick continues the existing single-level datum, and above is a lightweight upper level. A central courtyard garden occupies the other half of the brick basket; a dining room treated like a covered outdoor space. A wall of custom breeze bricks edges these were designed for the project. The courtyard enclosure creates a filtering element to the neighbouring house and offers glimpses to the boundary strip garden behind. A smaller breeze brick courtyard was also added at the street to give activity and presence back to the communal realm. 12.01.2022 New Life Bondi Junction - HHC - 2020: New Life Bondi Junction is a high-profile residential development offering boutique homes in the heart of Sydney’s eastern suburbs. The development consists of sixty-two luxury apartments in a thirteen-storey tower, with a further ten serviced apartments at the first-floor podium and retail spaces on the ground floor. A six-storey basement accommodates parking, storage and plant areas. The development features a Federation-period heritage... facade, which has been restored to its original glory. Complementing this heritage facade is a two-storey podium dressed in PGH’s Dry Pressed McGarvie Red bricks, laid in a push and pull pattern. This facade is framed and segmented in a rhythmic division by virtue of brick piers topped by a brick beam encompassing the podium. The push and pull brick infill draws its inspiration from the detailed ornamental tiling within the parapet of the heritage terraces. The materiality of this podium is balanced with a stark contrast in the materiality of the silver aluminium-clad tower over. These terraces further utilise the extended openings and fenestration to form planter boxes that soften the podium’s outlook. New Life Bondi Junction was designed with a vision to connect work and leisure, the old and new, and the traditional and the contemporary. 07.01.2022 COS Store - HHC - 2020: COS has opened its first retail store in Brisbane’s CBD, situated between Gucci and the exclusive Tattersalls Club. In keeping with the site’s high-end and heritage context, a sophisticated grey-toned clay brick was selected as the primary building material. The front facade features a Flemish bond, in keeping with the surrounding clay brick heritage buildings, leading into a hit-and-miss screen with receding header courses. Internally, the materiality... remains consistent with that of the front facade. The deep grey, solid brick is used as a flooring element, rising into brick plinths that provide places to sit, step and place product. The brick flooring leads up wooden stairs, where the same brick and timber materiality is used. Large glass windows frame the intricate hit-and-miss screen, allow customers to get close enough to inspect the bricklayer's craft. 02.01.2022 Australian National University - HHC - 2020: Nettletontribe was commissioned by the Australian National University (ANU) to develop plans for an 800-bed on-campus student accommodation precinct, located at the northern end of University Avenue. Bruce Hall, the oldest residential college at ANU, occupied the site. The completed design has re-opened University Avenue to the north in line with the original Walter Burley Griffin plan for Canberra. The built form addresses Univers...ity Avenue and is designed to respect the scale, texture and materiality of the surrounding residential buildings. The original buildings were constructed of a red brick commonly used in the 1950s, and the completed design incorporates the brickwork colour toning of the previous structure. Macarthur Mix bricks from the PGH Bricks and Pavers Dry Pressed Architectural range are used to form the landscaped and ground-floor walls that rise from the edges to create a strong base to the building. The dominant brickwork wall flanks University Avenue, twisting and angling back in two directions, ultimately terminating suspended over the main entrance. The brickwork is used through the ground floor to create a natural, textural finish. Internally, the red brickwork is supplemented with white brick to deliver lighter internal spaces complemented by natural timber finishes. The courtyard building typology ensures students have a significant green space, with views over the campus and to Black Mountain.
