The 2020 Struddys NQ Sportstar Awards celebrate the efforts of our regional volunteers particularly under these trying circumstances to support a return to sport and active recreation. The pandemic has impacted the majority of sports cancelling state, national and international competition. As a result the NQ Sportstar Awards is unable to be delivered in its full format in 2020. The traditional Service to Sport Award category however is evaluated over a longer period allowing the appropriate assessment to take place to select our best nominees. The 2020 NQ Sportstar Service to Sport Award will be slightly different this year. Ordinarily, the NQ Sportstar Awards includes only one Service to Sport category. This year we are offering three Senior Service to Sport Awards and one Junior Volunteer of the year Award. 15.01.2022 GOOD NEWS FRIDAY Last weekend a group of 78 in 23 cars took to the roads of Bundaberg and Bargara on our 2020 Drive to Cure MND. The trip visited local farms to... learn from the farmers mouth how our food makes it to our fridge and table. We also visited a few local attractions like Grunske's By The River Seafood Market and Takeaway, Bundaberg Rum Distillery and Splitters Farm. The great news from the trip is that due to our raffle, Bingo night and cane toad races, we have raised just over $26,000 which has blown us away after such a great weekend experience! A huge thank you to everyone for supporting this event and raffle! The raffle was made possible by some very special sponsors. 08.01.2022 Over the October long weekend, a group of city slickers toured the Bundaberg region, and fund raised $25,000 to support research into finding a cure for MND as ...well as supporting local farms, tourist attractions and businesses in Bundaberg, Queensland. The Drive to Cure took 80 supporters in convoy across the region, exposing them to all that the Bundaberg region has to showcase. Drive participants visited local farms to learn about the diversified farming practices of the different crops. One of the highlights of the event were learning the complexities of farming straight from the farmer’s mouth. MND and ME Foundation CEO, Jane Milne, said the response and incredible hospitaltiy we received from the local farmers and function venues makes was amazing! Not only are we raising funds and awareness for MND but we are also putting a spotlight on the issues that are affecting the farming community at the moment and the intricacies of farming such a diverse range crops. The Drive was sponsored by two businesses who have local affiliations. Private Norman Baird was an Indigenous Austra...lian who enlisted on 2 August 1917 to serve in the First World War. His brother, Trooper Charles Baird, previously enlisted on 5 May 1915, serving with the 5th and 11th Light Horse Regiments. Now, over 100 years later, their great great-grandson, Private Clayton Baird is serving in the 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment.
