22.01.2022 Macaulay Culkin - star of Home Alone has just turned 40. Wasn’t he ten just a few years ago? Does that fact make you feel old? Or maybe you’re thinking Macauley who? We live in an ageing population. But the idea of ageing is something we try to ignore. What’s the issue with getting old? Does our culture fear ageing?

18.01.2022 "Participation in sport is a human right" With that, quite frankly ludicrous, quote the Australian Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Kate Jenkins, welcomed the announcement by nine elite sports bodies in Australia, to the inclusion of trans athletes in their elite team should they meet the standard. (Oh and should their testosterone levels be low enough at testing time to permit). Of course the transition to acceptance onto elite teams of those who have transitioned will all be one way traffic. 18.01.2022 Every week we read somewhere that the public is outraged over something or someone, as if the 'public' were one monolithic chunk of people who all think the same way. But is that true? Is there any general to the general public, or do we have lots of mini, specific publics instead? Western societies are increasingly fractured into tribes with no real notion of the common good any longer. It often seems that the loudest voice or an activist group can give the impression that their cause is everybody’s cause. This is especially true in identity issues in our culture. Who gets to decide who the general public is? And who gets to speak on their behalf?

17.01.2022 Does the idea of religious liberty still have currency today? Join historian Dr. Sarah Irving-Stonebreaker for the rescheduled Richard Johnson lecture (now online).

10.01.2022 Here's a thought: What if the church wasted the COVID crisis? And I'm not simply talking about church preference. Nor am I talking about don't simply talk about what the better model for evangelism, mission and pastoral care might be. I'm talking about whether we wasted an opportunity to prepare ourselves for a far more reaching and hostile disrupter that a virus that swept up everyone, and required strict measures for everyone to adhere to. 09.01.2022 Loneliness is a big issue for many in our society. Friendships seem shallow and short. Friends sometimes let us down. Am I Johnny no mates? Where can I find real friends? We all need deeper and more lasting friendships. We all need people we can rely on so why not start with the friend who sticks closer than a brother?

07.01.2022 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun, all of them are misty, a chasing after the wind. (Ecclesiastes 1:14) Windy. It was going to be windy. The forecast ten days out from Marathon#6, with me in the form of my life going into it, and it was going to be windy. I checked the Bureau of Meteorology site every couple of hours. 06.01.2022 What is church? Why are there so many different denominations? Why can't we all just get along? What teachings should be considered essential for a church to be orthodox? Why does it matter? Join David Robertson and Stephen McAlpine as they speak with Melvin Tinker at the Dining Table.

05.01.2022 The Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma is perhaps the most important film of the decade. But does it suggest adequate answers to the profound problems raised? https://thirdspace.org.au//internet-giants-know-everything #theweeflea #DavidRobertson #TheSocialDilemma

03.01.2022 The debate proved without a shadow of a doubt that Trump versus Biden was Goliath versus Goliath. Not that both men proved to be a giant for their side, or indeed a champion of anything. The debate was abysmal. It was Goliath versus Goliath because both men employ the tactics of the Philistines at war. Each stood as representatives of their tribe facing off against their opponent across a no-man's land. [ 808 more words ] https://stephenmcalpine.com/goliath-versus-goliath/

02.01.2022 From tomorrow in the state of Victoria in Australia, all that you will have to do to become badder guys than you are today is to stay exactly where you are. Don't shift in your thinking around biblical sexual ethics. Don't move. Just stay orthodox and let the Victorian Government Legislation do the shifting for you. And you will move from bad to badder to baddest in quick smart time.... https://stephenmcalpine.com/victorian-conversation-therapy/

01.01.2022 When the comments section in The Times of London about the latest craziness (Trump having COVID) contains this thread ... ... you know we're in for interesting times. An evangelical Christian is worse than an amoral, "do whatever it takes" President. "Not a good look"! Hmm. And that's in The Times, which generally weeds out the trolls and crazies.
