25.01.2022 A fantastic story about Thirroul SLSC Life Member and former President Anthony Turner appearing in today's Illawarra Mercury. This is a follow up to Anthony being awarded SLSNSW Presidents Medal last week. The story covers some the deeds he has done throughout his involvement with our club, SLSI and Austinmer RFB. The article is well worth the read. Congratulations Anthony on what you have achieved and thank you for what you have done and continue to do.

24.01.2022 Celebrating 40yrs of Women in Surf Life Saving 1st July 1980 marked the first time females were allowed to gain their Bronze Medallion and become active members (patrollers & competitors) of Surf Life Saving clubs. Before this time we had many wonderful women as board members and working behind the scenes to create our wonderful club. But it wasn’t until this time 40yrs ago that women were allowed to stand next to men, keeping our beaches safe and competing in senior li...fesaving competition. Yes, before 1980 all female nipperette’s* had to drop out of the sport they loved and grew up with as there was nothing else offered!! *before the 1980’s nipperette association’s were formed as girls weren’t even allowed to join clubs and be nippers #womeninsurflifesaving #slsa #mysurflife Some Facts about our pioneering women.... First Female Bronze Medallion Holders Suzanne Payne, Sally Picot, Jodie Thomas, Sandra Campbell & Dianne Stewart. First Female Life Member - Julie Turner (Gibson) First Female 25yrs Service - Julie Turner & Anne Walton Only Female President - Kathy Foster (Gibson) First Female Competitor - Sally Picot First Female Australian Champion - Nioka Gray 1989/90 Beach Sprint Female Club Captains - Cheryl McLean, Kathy Foster, Anne Walton, Victoria Westley-Wise & Michelle Emmett Unfortunately, the club doesn’t have any photos of these early days of women on the beach (people must have had better things to do 40yrs ago than taking photos of themselves!!). We’d be very grateful if anyone does have photos and/or stories of this time to add to the club archives.

11.01.2022 Shark sightings on two Illawarra beaches this morning. First shark sighting at McCauleys beach at 06:45 hours , resulting in a number of surfers exiting the wat...er, followed by another sighting at a Austinmer beach. The shark was threshing about in the water chasing baitfish at 0:705 hours this morning. Surf Life Saving advice - if you see diving birds and baitfish around, sharks may be present- leave the water immediately. Always keep a eye out for any marine animals out there. We just want the public to be alert and not alarmed by the sightings this morning.

03.01.2022 We would like to thank and acknowledge many of our Club members who answered the call for help over the long weekend to assist with a major search and rescue operation after a boat capsized off Bulli Beach on Saturday evening. SLSNSW State Duty Officer Lachlan Pritchard and SLSI Branch Duty Officer Anthony Turner were involved in the ordeal from the beginning and both held major roles in the coordination of the entire operation, showing great leadership and calmness in a stre...ssful situation. TSLSC Members also assisted all day on Sunday by searching the water from Austinmer to Sandon Point in IRB's, on land combing Thirroul and McCauleys Beaches in our ATV, manning radios from our Clubhouse and maintaining operations logs at the Bulli SLSC headquarters. We acknowledge the efforts of Alison Montgomery, Andrew Turner, Kyle Mathiesen, Nadine Egan-Scott, Julie Turner, Michelle Emmett, Emma Lockhart, Scott Montgomery, Duncan Scott, Dylan Gillett, Rod Landy, Bryson Crick, Tim Wilson & Ben Cotterill. Again we remind everyone that our skills can be needed at any time and we thank our members who continuously volunteer their time to help others. It was a terrific team effort across Illawarra Branch with 75 members from various local clubs working together with emergency services. Thank you to Bulli SLSC for their coordination and hospitality in difficult circumstances. We also acknowledge our member Father Ken Cafe for providing grievance counselling at a post-operation debrief to all SLSI members involved. Thankfully on Saturday night 2 people were able to be saved but unfortunately 2 others were not. We extend our sympathy to the families involved at this devastating time.
