10.01.2022 This is the Face of A 'Green' Drought A sprinkle of rain, the grass tries to come through but the dam is still empty. What does this mean for farmers long term? 1. In speaking with farmers it is expected even if the drought does break that the recovery time will be in excess of 10 years 2. Farmers in the Tamworth area estimate they will be out of irrigating water in the next 3 months as their irrigation license restrictions will have been maxed 3. The pastures have not been ...able to seed, this will see a reduction in organic pasture production over the next 10 years or more. (It is cost prohibitive to seed vast areas of grazing lands). WHAT WILL THIS MEAN FOR CONSUMERS? Farmers in the drought-affected areas will have significantly reduced stock levels and breeding stock available. Gestation periods for Cattle & Sheep are 283 days & 152 days respectively. This could potentially significantly increase the costs of red meat in supermarkets across the country. Remember...
