12.01.2022 This book tells the story of Cliff Morse who grew up in a small rural community, Preolenna, on the North West Coast of Tasmania. It also tells the story of Preolenna through the residents’ eyes and what went to make the community strong and resilient. When Australia entered the Second World War, Cliff enlisted in the A.I.F. on 25 June 1940 at Launceston. He was immediately placed into a new Tasmanian unit, the 7th Division Salvage Unit. This unit saw action in Palestine, Egyp...t, Libya (Tobruk), Lebanon and Syria before returning to Australia. Then they served two tours in Papua New Guinea, including Kokoda and Shaggy Ridge. At the end of WWII the unit was stationed in Borneo. Cliff was discharged at Brighton, Tasmania, on 30th January 1944 having served a total of 1613 days which included 568 days in Australia and 890 days outside Australia. Returning home, after four and a half years of service, Cliff and his brother Laurie started Morses Bus and Taxi Service in Devonport. After five years he sold his share in the buses to Laurie and the taxis to brother-in-law Alan Ling. He then returned to Preolenna where he purchased land and began farming. He focused on dairying and growing potatoes and swedes for the Sydney market.
