24.01.2022 There has been a lot of anger about the vegan movement and rightly so. I was also going to have a big rant about it but there is so much on Facebook already, and while I am glad about that, I began to think that it would a positive move to answer their lies with pictures of what farms are really about. We honestly do care about our animals and go above and beyond to keep them safe and healthy. We willingly work from sun up to sun down for them. We laugh at some of their antic...s and cry when things happen that are out of our control and threaten their well-being. We understand animal behaviour and get a lot of pleasure from working with them. We just have not divorced ourselves from the nature with which we evolved. I couldn't find a photo of my beautiful donkey yet, so enjoy these few photos of my workmates and I promise my donkey will make the page soon.
23.01.2022 I suspect I won't be the most popular girl on the land when this effort is discovered later this afternoon. In my defence however, this tyre-wrecking, broken grid has been on the 'to-do' list for about 18 months and I was left home alone for a couple of days. It got the better of me and my effort matches my pay level and skill set.(yes, the grid is under there...I couldn't pull it up.)
20.01.2022 When my daughter was working in the NT she would send a pic on Tuesdays saying it was 'Tropical Tuesday' and asking where our shirts were. So we bought some (they are so cool) and now send her pics as well. I think it should be a national thing and when the halls of Parliament are decked with tropical shirts on a Tuesday, we'll know we've made it.
15.01.2022 Gymkhana practice to settle the old argument about whether motorbikes or horses are better.
15.01.2022 Parties in the bush just allow more freedom to have fun. A 'nothing fancy' waterslide made out of hay bales and thick plastic created loads of entertainment at my daughter's 21st. It didn't matter whether the kids brought their swim gear or not and workplace health and safety added lots of detergent on the night, so every aspect was covered.
15.01.2022 How real cowboys ride. Just a challenge when the horse turns but your head doesn't.
12.01.2022 It's been a long time since I last posted anything - over 18 months. There were a few reasons I stopped posting with one of them being a move to a new place with huge new challenges...it got sooo busy! Also going from purely cattle to learning how to farm hay as well and from living remotely to living right next to a bitumen road that can get busy has taken some adjustments. There's a couple of beaut stories on that one! I've had a number of people kindly say they miss readi...ng my stories and I really appreciate that sentiment, so I'm going to try and post some more stories again...I certainly have some new ones to tell! In the mean time I thought I'd update my cover photo with a picture from greener times when hay was plentiful. Those times will come again and the rural communities that are suffering in drought now will once again grow strong. Finally I'm sure I speak for all in the bush when I say a heartfelt thank you to so many people who have donated hay, money and other necessities to the bush. It often takes a long time for news from the bush to reach the cities in Australia but when it does, our city cousins always rally to support the bush.Thank you!
09.01.2022 For any on the land feeling as though you're all alone in the drought, you are not. People in the city care and most do what they can to help. This morning I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, and took part in an event on the Gold Coast to raise money for Drought Angels. Perfectly marrying Gold Coasters' zest for fun with raising money for those in the bush having anything but fun, over 1600 people took part in a world record attempt for the most p...eople doing sand angels at the same time. Drought Angels raised tens of thousands of dollars for their cause and I was honoured to meet Tash Johnson from the charity. The record, yet to be validated was well and truly broken. Like that record, the drought will be broken too. Hang in there, good people are doing their best to help us through in all sorts of ways! (The drone photos aren't mine, so I hope MyGC doesn't mind... they are just so good though)
09.01.2022 All animals talk to you. An angry cow in the yards usually lets you know she's about to 'head press' you into the rails just before she takes action. It's handy to know their language. Some discussions happen every day with certain animals. We have a small mob of sheep we inherited and we 'discuss' their attitude with them daily. They run with our pet goat, Paris, (aptly named for thinking she's way more beautiful and entitled than she really is.) Capably led by Paris, the ...mob told us sometime ago that their favourite grass is outside our place, beside THAT highway (mentioned in a previous post). We missed that message, only hearing it when our neighbour called us to say the sheep were on the road. So we told the mob, 'that's not happening' by fortifying their paddock to keep them in. I know they plot every day about how to get back out to the highway. Unfortunately, their 'fortified' gate is currently across a road that we use every day and it's a real trick to beat them through it. There's a battle of wills since they discovered the highway grass and we've often stood sizing each other up in silent discussion of our intentions at the gate. More than once I've pushed them back up the road, raced back to the motorbike or ute at the gate, only to see on reaching the gate, that the sheep and I came a draw. I obviously didn't explain things properly, yet their message is clear. Although animals speak to you, they're not into detail and there's no place for deep discussions about the pros and cons of their actions, as may happen in other work situations. So I'll either learn to sprint faster or get trickier until it rains and we can shift them. I guess learning to sprint fast is handy for other discussions with animals anyway...like that angry cow in the yards. .
05.01.2022 My daughter sent me this photo from her office desk yesterday. I thought it was a great perspective but can't think of a snappy caption so thought I'd hand it over to all of you.
03.01.2022 I might just not see they've broken into my house yard until they eat a bit of that grass along the fence. :)
