05.01.2022 A quick trip to South Africa allowed just enough time to experience some of the must-do sights and sounds of the 'Rainbow Nation'. But on a grey & wet morning in the 'Mother City' there were no views of Table Mountain - it was like the iconic landmark of Cape Town wasn't there! But whatever the weather there was an air of excitement - the 'Springbokke's' had just won the Rugby World Cup! In Jo'burg my main aim was to visit the cluster of townships that make up Soweto; the big...gest African settlement on the continent. We started the day with a visit to Vilakazi Street; probably the most famous street in Soweto. This is where the former homes of 2 Nobel Peace prize winners are located; Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela. Nearby is an emotional tear jerking documentation of anti-apartheid injustices and conflicts and where many people died in 1976, including 13-year old student Hector Pieterson, after whom a memorial and museum are named. It was tempting to bungee from atop of the famous Orlando Towers - but my feet would remain planted on earth today! A guided stop at one of the many townships of greater Soweto was both interesting and insightful. We made our way through alleyways of tin shacks, where we were greeted by welcoming smiles. Our last stop was at the Regina Mundi Church - the largest Catholic church in S.A. Besides featuring beautiful stained glass the church is famous for 'The Madonna & Child of Soweto' - a painting of a black Virgin Mary & Jesus. Thank you South Africa - until next time.
