16.01.2022 Scott Morrison and Gladys Berejiklian announced yesterday that the Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport Line will commence construction this year. The total cost of the project will be $11B (twice the cost of the airport itself) and it is expected to create 14,000 jobs over 6 years. The project will include 6 metro stations, including one at the Aerotropolis, 2 within the airport, and an interchange at St Marys to adjoin the existing rail network.... A trip from the new airport to Central will take over an hour and will require a change at St Marys. Western Sydney University assistant vice-chancellor, Andy Marks, said that this is not a boost for Western Sydney but will just encourage more people to travel to workplaces in the east. "What we want to see with these transport projects is something that supports job generation in Western Sydney and jobs beyond the construction phase." *Exact station locations are yet to be confirmed.
16.01.2022 This is the world’s first height-adjustable crane system. It was developed by Hutchinson Builders for the Brisbane Skytower project - Brisbane’s largest tower. The innovative crane system allowed Hutchies to comply with aviation requirements by encroaching into aircraft airspace during the day and lowering the crane at night below the maximum permitted height of 274 m. The crane system ultimately allowed the top 4 floors to be retained in the design to reach the maximum buil...ding height permitted by CASA. The innovation of the crane’s design is the purpose-built steel shaft from which the crane is hydraulically lifted up and down. Being cantilevered external to the building allows work to be completed on lower levels while the upper levels are under construction. Hutchies’ crane technology is now available industry-wide and suits a range of cranes and bottom climbing systems. Their innovative height adjustable tower crane system was nominated for an Australian Construction Award 2020 for Innovation Of The Year, which has been postponed until November this year. 15.01.2022 The world’s first fully transparent sky pool has been lifted into place by one of the largest mobile cranes in the world in a new London residential development. The pool at the Embassy Gardens development in the Nine Elms district is 5 m wide and spans 14 m between two buildings, 10 storeys (35 m) high. The 50-tonne pool structure is made of acrylic (inspired by aquariums) which is much lighter and less brittle than glass. It is also more transparent and more easily joined, ...with joints as strong as the parent material. The bottom of the pool is 300 mm thick and the pool walls are 3.2 m high, 200 mm thick supported on 450 mm deep x 200 mm wide acrylic beams. Two tensioned cables join the transparent pool structure to stainless steel tubs set within the buildings. These tubs sit on bearings, allowing movement to occur independently of the two buildings. Acrylic has a high thermal coefficient, so springs are used to maintain a consistent level of tension in the cables as the pool shrinks and expands. 10.01.2022 Snowy Hydro 2.0s main works have been approved by NSW. The final decision now rests in the hands of the federal government. This is despite mounting criticism from domain experts that the project is fundamentally flawed and has huge environmental impacts. The chairman of the NSW Fisheries Scientific Committee, Mark Lintermans, has resigned saying the project will threaten 2 fish species: the stocky galaxias and the Macquarie perch.... I cannot continue to serve a government that so wilfully ignores the destructive impacts of Snowy 2.0 on two threatened fish species, he said. Snowy Hydro was given two exemptions from the NSW Biosecurity Act in order to fast-track the project - removing the requirement to prevent the transfer of invasive species. Minister Rob Stokes said Snowy Hydro Ltd would be required to invest almost $100 million for biodiversity and environmental offsets including a captive breeding program for the fish. But executive director of the National Parks Association of NSW, Gary Dunnett, said the impact on the park would be huge and the breeding program was tokenism. We are convinced that this environmentally destructive project will prove an infrastructure white elephant and act as a monument to environmental vandalism, he said. #renewables #sustainability #infrastructure #snowyhydro20

07.01.2022 This is how you build a 180 m long section of freeway over existing roads with minimal disruption to traffic. For Adelaide’s Darlington Upgrade, three 3,000-tonne bridge sections were constructed off-site and transported into place by self-propelled modular transporters or trailers (SPMTs). The team defined the deflection and stress limits for the bridge and undertook real-time monitoring of deflection, twist and strain during the move, which was monitored remotely in the U....S. The SPMT’s provided by crane and transport company, Sarens, were operated via remote control and travelled 100 metres per hour. Each SPMT has 72 wheels across 6 axle lines which have a capacity of between 36 to 48 tonnes per axle line. The project was delivered in 2020 by the Gateway South Consortium, comprising contractors Fulton Hogan and Laing O’Rourke and engineers SMEC, Jacobs and KBR on behalf of the South Australian Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure.
07.01.2022 This automated robot is printing instructions on the job site. The robot was developed by construction tech company, Social Construct, who are on a mission to turn the construction site into an assembly line. Social Construct is developing artificially intelligent tools to optimise and automate the design of buildings whilst maintaining the flexibility of being able to make changes to suit actual site dimensions. This is done by allowing the shell of the building to be constr...ucted as normal, then measuring the on site dimensions so that the computer can design for that exact space. The automated software then designs optimised floor layouts, services and building assemblies that click into place on site. The team says it could save construction time and cost by 20-30%. 06.01.2022 BREAKING: A steel-framed glass roof has collapsed at a Lendlease construction site at Curtin University killing a 23-year old man and injuring two other men both aged in their 20s, one seriously. The collapse occurred today at around 12.30pm local time. The site under construction is the university's new innovation precinct, Exchange. Preliminary reports are that two of the men were working on a boom lift when the collapse occurred, causing them to fall 20 metres. The cause of the collapse remains unclear.
06.01.2022 Construction is now benefiting from innovations in hardware (such as robotics and LiDAR) and software (such as artificial intelligence and machine learning) - integrating them to bring new ways of conducting quality inspections and surveys. By using these technologies, problems that often go unidentified until its too late, can be identified much sooner in the build process - saving cost and time. https://www.thisisconstruction.com.au//the-technologies-re

02.01.2022 Chinese developer, Hans Group, has submitted plans for twin towers up to 80 storeys (257 m) at 338 Pitt Street, Sydney which would include residential apartments and hotel rooms. The two towers would be connected by a sky terrace above the 32nd floor which would house a bar, restaurant and hotel facilities. The sky terrace would also connect the two towers together using 4-storey high trusses, which would provide lateral stability and eliminate the need for outriggers or m...ass dampers. A plant room occupying a floor of the sky terrace would enable shared services between buildings for greater efficiency. Sitting across 8 sites, the twin towers were designed by fjmt studio, Polly Harbison Design, TRiAS architects and Aileen Sage as part of a design competition, with structural engineering by Arup. The designers say the two slender towers reduce the impact on the public domain compared to a single tower. And the smaller floor plates offer unusually high levels of amenity with very high levels of sun and views. #constructionAu #architecture #engineering #construction #sydney #urbandevelopment #structuralengineering #nsw

01.01.2022 Scott Morrision has announced $25,000 grants to Australians wanting to build or renovate which could inject $688 million into the residential sector. The government says this will support 140,000 direct construction jobs and a million workers in the wider residential building sector, including architects, material supplies and manufacturers, and engineers. In order to get the grant you must meet strict criteria:... Minimum total spend of $150,000 Does not apply to investment properties It applies to new homes valued up to $750,000 including land and renovations worth between $150,000 and $750,000 that will result in the property being worth under $1.5 million. It cant be used to build things outside the house like swimming pools, sheds or garages. You must enlist a qualified builder It is means tested to exclude those making over $125,000 per individual or $200,000 per couple Shadow Treasurer, Jim Chalmers said prior to the announcement "we need to see social and public housing as a key part of any package of measures to support the building industry."
