25.01.2022 I had recently cut my hair into a bob with a fringe, which was a tremendous mistake seeing that the sweat almost permanently licked it to my forehead. Finally sitting down we had a cigarette, a coffee and a few glasses of prosecco followed by a few more glasses of prosecco and Aperol spritz. She had a green and red scarf in her hair she wore Italy well. We imagine traveling again through ‘Bagilore Solare’, featured in Issue Sixteen. ... A hot and slow European summer spent baking along the Mediterranean coast collecting memories, moments and sunburn. 21.01.2022 In my bones I find my living ancestors. Both the human and non-human kind. Made of animal and earth matter, these bones will be my legacy. The part of this body that will take the longest to disintegrate when I die. For over 400 years they will remain, gently deteriorating within the earth, as they witness the next 15 generations walking upon them. Enjoy this beautiful creative collaboration by two incredibly talented women in Issue Fifteen: link in bio > Words: @kirillydawn ... 20.01.2022 Inspiration from our amazing Editor @nat.woods_ in her beautifully written welcome letter, found in issue 16 of our in-house publication @thisisparadiso_ While it might feel like this year has been filled with destruction and disruption, I think this year and all its wild happenings have actually been an invitation to create. An invitation to slow down and create the life we actually want to live. An invitation to dive into creativity, either by doing our own creating or by... reading, viewing and absorbing the creativity of others. On the community level we have been invited, if not urged, to create better, safer and fairer communities and societies. We’ve been urged to unravel everything we thought to be true about this world and the future and instead reimagine what the world could be instead. What if we did decolonise our mindsets, our governments and our communities? What if we did defund the police and instead fund community services? What if we did continue to live with this virus forever in our communities? What if we used this time to create lifelong habits of becoming more self-sufficient? This year has been tough and it will likely continue to be so. Instead of sitting back and waiting for the ‘new normal’ to come our way, let’s start to create it, right now. This could be the opportunity we and the planet have all been waiting for. 16.01.2022 Chloe Smith makes soft food. In Issue Fifteen, Chloe talks to her brother Dan about art, her voice and accidentally mistaking her work for real. Words @_danielgsmith Muse @imakesoftfood ... Dan: I always find it hard to explain exactly what sort of art you make, so if you had to explain your art to our grandma, how would you explain what you do? Chloe: Yeah. It is hard to explain. And I kind of explain it differently depending on who the person is and how much detail I want to go into. I often use the word hyper-real. I kind of veer away from telling people that it’s specifically food. I generally tell people that it’s like hyper-real sculptures of mundane objects. I guess it’s pretty complicated but that’s probably the most synthesised way of describing it. 15.01.2022 For your Saturday morning reading pleasure, from Issue Fifteen: Lockie Marley: a profile in construction Words @max.favetti ... Muse @lockiemarley Lockie Marley is one of those annoying humans that you hear about endlessly before you meet. The prompt to invoke his denomination is as loosely tethered to relevance as it is frequent. It is often prefaced with an audible gasp, the Lord’s name taken in vain and then, his. When a person’s reputation for being wonderful precedes him and the first time you meet, he’s flown across the world to surprise a mutual friend, you take that initial sandaled step on the pilgrimage of a recent convert. Such renown elicits a gurgling of my nerves that compound upon greeting, as before you become acquainted with his mind, you must press the flesh that encases it and it’s certainly something to write home about and/or acknowledge at the top of a profile of him. 01.01.2022 From Issue Fifteen: Julie Poly’s Ukrzaliznytsia Meet photographer and artist @julie_poly who sees beauty in the trivial. She has just released her Ukrzaliznytsia project, a tactile rich photo essay book that takes the reader on a journey on Ukraine’s one and only railroad transportation enterprise. From the moment you pick up her book, removing it from it’s Ukrzaliznytsia branded packaging, holding the train ticket that was neatly stored in the inside cover, you enter a worl...d of ‘provincial gigolos and leopard-clad ladies, rigorous businesswomen and young soldiers.’ Julie Poly spent a year making documentary and staged photos on her local trains, predominantly in Kyiv region, Eastern and Western parts of Ukraine, and the results are an incredibly rich collection of stories, where the boundaries between reality and fiction are blurred.
