25.01.2022 Northern Lights performed by the wonderful Sjaella
24.01.2022 I am sad. I miss rehearsals and dont want to start a virtual choir. It helped to record my thoughts. I hope they help you keep perspective too. We can only do... so much. BECAUSE CHOIR IS GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS by Joan Riddle Steinmann Here is the deal my friends: Unless you are singing in a room with people, it isnt choir. Period. Choir is about connection. Choir is about 30 or 210 or 6 singers all shaping a vowel so perfectly that the overtones extend up to heaven and make the angels weep. Choir is your college roommate, she won first place in your hometown Met auditions, and your Great Aunt Ruth, she turned 89 last month and wants everyone to know she still has her high notes. They sing together every Sunday, and the paint doesnt peel off the walls. WHY? CHOIR. Thats why. Choir is magical. Alone I am a soprano, but in choir Im a tenor, and an alto, and a bass. When you sing in a choir, the sound of the WHOLE CHOIR comes out of YOUR mouth. Boom. Magic. Choir isnt something you can do alone with a webcam on your computer. It just isnt. Period. So be kind to your choral friends. We are suffering. We feel this disconnect keenly. Yes we know about Eric Whitacre and his virtual choir. We love Eric; he is our token rock star and makes our whole sport sexier. And in these days of deadly airborne pathogens, choir is as much a contact sport as football. We will retreat to the sidelines. We will learn to use Zoom and Google Hangouts. We will record our voices, send them Into the Unknown. We retreat willingly. Because at the end of the day we love Great Aunt Ruth and her questionable high notes. Her life is on the line, and choir. just. isnt. worth. the. risk. But these days wont last forever, my friends. We will make it through this, and when we sing together again, it will be amazing.

22.01.2022 Night of Silence Dan Kantor; arr. Ferguson ~ St. Olaf Choir and Nidaros Cathedral Girls Choir, sung in Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim, Norway. :: Cold are the p...eople, winter of life We tremble in shadows this cold endless night Frozen in the snow lie roses sleeping Flowers that will echo the sunrise Fire of hope is our only warmth Weary its flame will be dying soon. Voice in the distance, call in the night On wind you enfold us you speak of the light Gentle on the ear you whisper softly Rumors of a dawn so embracing Breathless love awaits darkened souls Soon will we know of the morning. Spirit among us shine like the star Your light that guides shepherds and kings from afar Shimmer in the sky so empty, lonely, Rising in the warmth of your Sons love Star unknowing of night and day Spirit we wait for your loving Son.

17.01.2022 Coventry Carol is one of the best-known, yet most heartbreaking scores for today, Dec 28th, the Feast of the Innocents. In posting various versions of this pi...ece today, we not only remember the ancient story of the children killed by Herod, but also encourage compassionate support of children today who live in vulnerable situations and locales. 15.01.2022 Pause for a moment, choral friends, and listen to 5 of gentle beauty for Christmas Eve ~ Koppngen by Per-Erik Moraeus (arr. R. Sund), text by Py Bckman, su...ng by the Sofia Vokalensemble (Sweden) SATB score - https://goo.gl/sEkVBk SSAA score - https://goo.gl/vBsU3t TTBB score - https://goo.gl/wE6MeP Lyrics (Eng. transl., Minna Joki) 1- There is silence around me In the peaceful winter night From the church down in the valley I can see the candle light And I stopped for a moment In this winter paradise, When I heard a choir singing Through the darkness and the ice 2- And the rays from the lights behind The windows vaulted frames Have united the souls in hope That something great is waiting And I know that those who have left us here Had the same thoughts as I We are like flames in the darkness And stars up in the sky 3- And I can see how they sparkle, As they fade before my eyes And the truth is coming closer Like a wonder in disguise. We are caught here for a moment Like an imprint of a hand On an old and frosted window Or a footprint in the sand 4- For a while, Im eternal Thats the only thing I know I am here and we share our dreams About our destinations It is cold out here, the snow is white But I am warm deep inside, I am warm cause I know that My faith will be my guide 5- Now there is silence around me I have heard those words again In a hymn of grace and glory, Saying nothing is in vain I can sing and I believe it, Let the message reach the sky Oh, let your promise never die 6- And I long for the others, It is peaceful in the church, He was born for a purpose, And thats why were here together Holy night, I feel like a child inside, And believe he was sent So Im lighting a candle each Sunday in Advent

09.01.2022 When you're a 17-year-old Minnesota choral student, and the world-famous Voces8 performs your arrangement of "Be Still, My Soul" as a surprise Christmas gift! T...hat's exactly what happened last week to STMA Choirs' Rand Matheson. Enjoy -- and find out the whole story from his mom below! --- From Rebecca Matheson: "Our son Rand is a 17-year-old senior at St. Michael-Albertville School District. He has a passion for choral music and composition and plans to study music education in college. At the beginning of the 2020-21 school year, he was elected by peers to serve as the Concert Choir President. The choir met three times each week in a large auditorium wearing masks and social distancing for rehearsal. Unfortunately, all socials, concerts, and events have been cancelled since the world shut down last spring. After Thanksgiving, STMA High School moved back to more restrictive distance learning yet again and the masked rehearsals have been put on hold. The resiliency of young people throughout the world has been astounding throughout these challenging times. Rand has been no exception. He has continued to show resiliency in the face of constant cancellations and uncertainty. "At the end of this extremely difficult year, we wanted to give Rand a Christmas surprise that would lift him up and share how proud we are of him and his accomplishments. This past summer he wrote an arrangement of the Finlandia tune with the title of Be Still, My Soul. His piece was originally going to be sung by his Concert Choir this fall, but that hasn’t been possible due to Covid restrictions. "The last concert Rand participated in prior to the Covid shutdown was in February 2020 at St. Michael Catholic Church with the incredible world renown vocal ensemble VOCES8. On a whim, I had the impression to reach out to them to see if they would be willing to sing the arrangement for him as a Christmas gift. I didn’t expect a response, let alone for them to follow through with my request in the way that they did. My husband and I were blown away by the graciousness of their incredible group. This gift has been a sweet reminder to our family that people are good and God is mindful of each individual. We are so grateful to VOCES8 for this incredible Christmas miracle for our sweet boy."
