09.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY - The 5 Pillars of Shiny Coats Do you love seeing your horse with a healthy, shiny coat? A shiny coat starts on the inside! Here are 5 tips for enhancing coat shine in your horse: Feed a balanced diet - this is important for every aspect of horse health, but for coat shine and colour, nutrient imbalances can have a big impact! Make sure what you are feeding meets their requirements, and that the ratios of vitamins and minerals are correct. Too much or too litt...le of minerals like copper and zinc can change the colouring in a horses coat. Choose quality protein sources - hair is mostly made up of protein, so protein and essential amino acids are needed to grow healthy coats. But did you know that feeds classed as better sources of protein will contain higher amounts of essential amino acids? Make sure you choose feeds that contain quality protein sources. Feed oils with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids - oils and fatty acids not only improve the health of their coat, but also increase shine. They can also be a good source of energy and conditioning. Watch out for worms - worm and parasite burdens can turn a horses coat dull and brittle. Keep on top of worms with regular faecal egg counts, worming and paddock rotations. Brush brush brush - brushing helps to remove dirt and dead hair, and also to increase blood flow. It stimulates the glands in the horses skin, which helps to release their natural oils and enhance shine and health. If you need help balancing your horses diet, send us a message!
