23.01.2022 Do you have goats? These are great tips from Diego Valley on Vaccinations: Vaccination day "Here at Diego Valley I vaccinate with Zoetis Ultravac 5 in 1. Vaccinations are given subcutaneous (under the skin). Best way to administer a sub q injection is by pulling up a pinch of skin to a tent, inserting the needle into the base of the tent and parallel to the long axis of the goats body. Be careful not to penetrate through to the other side and discharge the vaccinatio...n on the skin. Goats are given regular revaccination at 6 monthly intervals to maintain effective immunity against enterotoxaemia Kids are given a vaccination at 6 weeks of age and a booster 4 weeks later All breeding does are vaccinated 1 month prior to kidding Goats can form a lump from the injection site. This is common and should go away over time Vaccination bottle once opened will only last for 30 days in the fridge. If you only have a few goats, your local vet should give individual vaccinations so you don't have to waste a whole bottle. " Diego Valley Miniature Goat Stud See more

22.01.2022 LET'S TALK LUPINS... Lupins are legumes (members of the pea family) that are used throughout the world as a feed supplement for horses and livestock. They are known for their high protein content, good levels of digestible fibre and some fat. Lupins are beneficial as a protein or energy supplement as part of a balanced diet. ... Why are lupins a good inclusion in a horse's diet? CONDITIONING GRAIN: flaked lupins are a good addition to a horses diet due to their cool conditioning properties. They are considered low starch and high in fibre, so are digested efficiently in the hindgut. The low starch content means that they can be a beneficial supplement for horses that are prone to laminitis. COOL ENERGY SOURCE: Lupins are a palatable, energy-dense feed, that serve as a good source of cool energy for performance horses, racehorses and endurance horses. They are also suitable for growing and breeding horses. This cool energy can be good for horses that are prone to fizzy or hot behaviour. COST-EFFECTIVE: due to their density and high protein levels, lupins are a cost-effective protein supplement. We use lupins as an ingredient in a number of our equine products, and also supply them as a whole grain, flaked or cracked. Flaked lupins are our recommended form for horses, as horses cannot digest a whole, unprocessed lupin. Our Flaked Lupins are steam cooked, so they are digested efficiently, and you don't need to cook or soak them. They also retain their husk, which is a source of protein and fibre too. Chloe Gee Equestrian and Leeara Park use T&R Flaked Lupins as a supplement to some of their horse's diets for cool conditioning and energy. *Lupins are not a complete feed and should only be fed as part of a balanced diet. They should not be fed in excess of the recommended rate. Contact us today if you'd like more information on adding Lupins to your horse's diet.

22.01.2022 Overcoming a challenge in your horse's training can be difficult! Step 1 is acknowledging what your challenge is, and this is often difficult to do! Once you have recognised what you need to work on, Step 2 is finding the right resources to help. Chloe Gee Equestrian has been working on her training and control with Tia recently. Check out this great video of her schooling some serious grids with Sonja Johnson.
21.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW: Spring can be a challenging time for mares! Their hormones start racing and their behaviour can change due to fluctuating levels of progesterone and oestrogen. The increasing daylight hours in spring cause mares to start cycling reproductively, but their cycles can be erratic and prolonged as their hormone levels readjust. This can lead to 'mare-ish' behaviour, and they can become stressed and difficult on the ground and under saddle. Starting your mare on a s...oothing supplement now can help to ease her transition into Spring. Dodson & Horrell's Stroppy Mare is a natural, soothing supplement formulated to calm and settle mares struggling with hormonal behaviour. 16.01.2022 Tip Tuesday - TOPLINE! With competitions starting again soon, many riders will be working on building their horse's fitness, condition and TOPLINE. We often get asked about how to build topline, so here are a few tips to help you understand what it is, and how you can build it with your horse. WHAT IS TOPLINE? The 'topline' of the horse refers to the muscle coverage across their neck, back and rump. While topline can vary from horse to horse, an ideal topline shows strong, w...ell-rounded and even muscles throughout this area. This is because topline and loin muscle strength influences the horses athletic ability and even soundness. HOW DO YOU BUILD TOPLINE? Building topline is about building healthy muscle, so it comes from a combination of appropriate exercise and diet. Building the muscle comes from working those muscles in the correct way, so talk to your coach about exercises that will help your horse. But to build muscle, they must have the right building blocks in their diet! WHAT DO YOU FEED TO HELP TOPLINE? Building topline is building muscle, and as muscle is made up of 70% protein...protein is key! But not all protein is created equal. Your horse’s diet needs to include superior quality sources of protein, not just vast amounts of protein. Why? Feeds classed as better sources of protein will contain higher amounts of essential amino acids, especially those needed for muscle building. Lysine for example is vital for muscle building, and is an essential amino acid, so must be provided in the diet. It is also a limiting amino acid, though which means if the horse doesn't have enough Lysine, it won't be able to use the rest of the amino acids in it's diet. Healthy muscle building also requires the right vitamin and minerals, so make sure your horse has a complete, balanced diet, without any deficiencies. Need help with your horse's diet? 13.01.2022 SPRING CHICKENS - The Spring Flush is happening now! Spring flush is a natural reaction to increasing daylight hours which signal chickens to increase their egg production. The increased production is a survival mechanism, as chicks hatched in spring and summer are more likely to survive with the warmer weather and abundance of food. ... For laying hens and backyard chickens, this means we get more eggs! To capture the benefits though, their diet needs to support the increased production. Not sure what you should be feeding your chooks? Send us a message and we can help! Check out our great laying range on our website: https://thompsonandredwood.com.au/chicken-and-poultry-feeds

10.01.2022 How do you know if you are feeding the right amount in spring? In this video, sponsored rider Sophie Warren discusses how to observe your horse for any changes caused by spring grass and adjusting your feed to manage this. In spring, your horse's pasture can become a lot more delicious and nutritious thanks to increased photosynthesis and mobilising of sugars into the blades that your horses eat. ... This extra nutrition can influence your horse's weight and behaviour, and you might need to make some small adjustments in their diet, to absorb these changes. What should you do? Stay on the look out for weight changes or behavioural changes and adjust their diet if you need to Take progress photos to help monitor condition. It can be harder to notice changes when seeing your horse every day Need help? Get in touch with us and we can help you find the right diet for your horse. 10.01.2022 Have you tried our FREE custom feed program? We recently received this message from Narelle, who had a custom feed program created for her endurance horse and his paddock companion: "Huge thanks to Jill Davies for her advice and patience regarding diets for my two boys one who is a very much loved paddock ornament and my endurance horse. Jill provided me with detailed feeding advice for both boys and was on hand via email to answer any queries I had, no matter how trivial! ... A few months on and Jill is still happy to provide advice and assistance with not only feeds but supplements as well. I have found the diet for my endurance horse especially successful with him having more fuel in the tank for our longer rides (40k +) and many favourable comments from fellow riders on how good he looks and his amazing top line! So lucky to have T&R producing great WA made products for our equine family members which are affordable, plus the assistance of a very knowledgable Jill Davies to guide us on feeding, both the athlete and leisure horse! 09.01.2022 Our Winter Prize Pack competition received over 580 entries, and we loved reading about the success you've had with our products. The Equine Prize Pack went to Lenneke Williamson and her daughter Anneke, whose horse Tommy has turned around on the Horse Cubes Senior Formula. Lenneke wrote: "It is hard to choose between Claytons pellets and Horse Cubes but it will have to be the Horse Cubes. My daughter's horse has some dental issues and had choke a couple of times. The cubes... are just so easy to soak, making them the perfect feed for Tommy. He is also a windsucker and not easy to keep weight on. Since starting him on the Horse Cubes he has gained a lot of weight and looks healthy with an amazing shine. I can't believe the difference it has made in just 6 weeks! We are very impressed with the product." A special mention also to Stephen Johnson from Denmark, who was awarded a runner up prize of 2 x 20kg bags of feed. Thank you to everyone who entered!

08.01.2022 WHAT IS THE GOLDEN RULE OF FEEDING A BROODMARE? Do not overfeed during early gestation, and do not underfeed during late gestation and lactation! This is because the growth of the foal and it's nutrient requirements are very small in early gestation. It's from the 7 month mark that the majority of a foal's growth, skeletal and tissue development happens. Pregnancy can be split up into two main phases:... Phase 1 - from Conception to 7 months, (early gestation) Phase 2 - from 7 months to foaling (late gestation) Phase 1: at conception, it is important for your broodmare to have a Body Condition score (BCS) between 5 and 7 on the Henneke Scale. If a mare is underweight or overweight, her fertility and ability to hold a pregnancy is decreased. Once she is in foal, the aim of feeding in Phase 1 is to maintain a good body condition score, as the foetus' nutrient requirements are miniscule compared with the mares own maintenance requirements. Phase 2: At the 7th month of pregnancy, a foetus weighs approximately 20% of its birth weight, which is less than 2% of the mares body weight. But from here on, it's GROW GROW GROW! The nutrient requirements of the foal, and consequently the mare, increase dramatically during this phase. The broodmare needs high levels of protein, amino acids, vitamins and minerals to support the foal, without overfeeding on calories! Feeding a balanced breeding specific feed like our Horse Grower Weaner Pellets helps to take the guesswork out of your mare's ration. Want to know more about feeding a broodmare from conception through to lactation? Read more in our latest blog post from expert nutritionist Jill Davies: https://thompsonandredwood.com.au/managing-broodmare-nutrit
08.01.2022 CHEW ON THIS! Did you know that a horse's saliva is key to buffering their highly acidic stomach? Saliva contains bicarbonate, which also helps protect the fragile amino acids provided by feed. Saliva is only produced when the horse is chewing, so how much they make, is determined by what goes in their mouth. Hay encourages the most chewing, with 2500 - 3500 chews/kg which can produce 20-30L of saliva in a day. ... Sweet feeds and grains only take between 350-500 chews/kg, and produce 12-14L of saliva. This is why having adequate hay and forage is important for gut health. Keep the quantity up, but let their body condition dictate the quality of the forage i.e. if they are overweight or have sensitivities, offer less nutritious forage. What's the take home message? Keeping horses chewing as much as possible on good chewy feeds, keeps the saliva flowing, and their stomachs going! #equinenutrition #guthealth Feed Your Steed
07.01.2022 The days are getting longer, so your chickens will be starting to increase their egg production, and their nutritional requirements will be going up! Chickens decrease their laying over winter to avoid chicks hatching in the cold, a response that is triggered by decreasing daylight hours. We have passed the shortest day of the year now so egg production will be starting to go up. Now is the time to make sure they your chickens are receiving enough protein and calcium to s...upport their increased laying demands. Our great range of laying feeds are available from your local stockist now, so your girls get the fuel they need.

05.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY - The 5 Pillars of Shiny Coats Do you love seeing your horse with a healthy, shiny coat? A shiny coat starts on the inside! Here are 5 tips for enhancing coat shine in your horse: Feed a balanced diet - this is important for every aspect of horse health, but for coat shine and colour, nutrient imbalances can have a big impact! Make sure what you are feeding meets their requirements, and that the ratios of vitamins and minerals are correct. Too much or too litt...le of minerals like copper and zinc can change the colouring in a horses coat. Choose quality protein sources - hair is mostly made up of protein, so protein and essential amino acids are needed to grow healthy coats. But did you know that feeds classed as better sources of protein will contain higher amounts of essential amino acids? Make sure you choose feeds that contain quality protein sources. Feed oils with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids - oils and fatty acids not only improve the health of their coat, but also increase shine. They can also be a good source of energy and conditioning. Watch out for worms - worm and parasite burdens can turn a horses coat dull and brittle. Keep on top of worms with regular faecal egg counts, worming and paddock rotations. Brush brush brush - brushing helps to remove dirt and dead hair, and also to increase blood flow. It stimulates the glands in the horses skin, which helps to release their natural oils and enhance shine and health. If you need help balancing your horses diet, send us a message!

02.01.2022 Strangles - there have recently been some confirmed cases of Strangles in WA. While the affected horses, venues and areas are currently controlling the infection, it's a good reminder to familiarise yourself with Strangles, what it is, the symptoms and how you can protect your horse. What is Strangles? Strangles is an infectious, upper airway infection that is caused by the bacteria 'Streptococcus equi'. How does it spread? Like a lot of bacterial infections, it spreads ...through shared water and feed troughs. The bacteria has quite a long life in the environment, and can last on equipment for several weeks after the last case. A horse can also remain infectious for up to four weeks after the last symptoms were shown. When do you start seeing symptoms? A horse can start showing signs usually between 3-6 days, but this has been known to vary between 2 and 15 days. Early signs and symptoms: once a horse is infected they can become sick quite rapidly. - Temperature can rise to 41C - They might exhibit a slight cough - As it is an upper respiratory infection, this area becomes inflamed, making swallowing painful. - They will have a watery discharge from their nose, which turns into a yellowy, pus discharge. - After 10 -14 days, the head and neck lymph nodes can become swollen abscesses. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT IF YOUR HORSE IS UNWELL, YOU CONTACT YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY. Prevention: Strangles can be prevented through vaccination in horses over 3 months of age. Good biosecurity measures can also protect your horses and your property. PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR VET TO DISCUSS VACCINATION. The WA Department of Primary Industries has some great information on their website which is well worth reading, and they have some great resources on biosecurity. 02.01.2022 It's Wednesday today, hump day! So here are four fun facts about animal humps... 1. Camel humps are for storage - just not water storage! A camel's hump actually stores fat, which can be used as an energy and nutritional source when food is scarce. 2. If a camel needs to draw from the stores in it's hump, the hump can become softer and droop down. It will soon return to normal once their food intake increases. ... 3. One of the identifying features of Brahman cattle (and many other Bos Indicus breeds) is their hump. Similar to camels, the hump is used for fat storage as an energy and nutritional reserve. 4. Brahman humps are actually a valuable meat source, as they are highly marbled (intramuscular fat content) and when cooked correctly, make a very tender, flavoursome beef option! #camels #brahman

02.01.2022 MEET NANUSHKA! "Nanushka is a 20yo purebred Arabian mare whom Ive had since she was 8. Previously always a very good doer- always existing off just pasture, shed been losing a lot of weight and was very lethargic. She had a major dental procedure to fix some issues with her teeth and while at Murray Vet for her procedure we realised shed lost 100kg since her last healthy weight at the vet! I was straight onto Jill Davies to do her up a major weight gain diet... theres exactly 10 weeks between these photos and I credit the T&R Horse Cubes for Seniors and Digestive EQ for the improvement in her condition! The T&R Horse Cubes are so palatable and easier to digest plus great value for money!"
