25.01.2022 Were really excited to share that our Yarrowee River and Tributaries Masterplan has been adopted by the Ballarat Council. We cannot wait to see the ongoing implementation along the corridor including the 4 priority projects. Check out councils article below for more information on the proposals and what happens next.

24.01.2022 We have been working alongside Landcore on the Florian Living Estate project, located within the Ballarat West Growth Zone since 2018. The estate name ‘Florian’ means flowering or flourishing. The entry signs that we designed for the estate have recently been installed and we think that they complement the estate’s name and marketing themes well. The form of the signs are inspired by the autumnal leaf colours of a deciduous tree. The colours of the entry signs have been extended to the playground and picnic shelter within the public open space reserve. We worked closely with Plinius, a local steel fabricator, and Butler Excavations, a local civil contractor on this project and we were impressed with their attention to detail at each stage of the project.

24.01.2022 We had a great but chilly day in Kinglake last week looking at the main street renewal. The large Eucalyptus trees in the main street survived the Black Saturday bush fires and are a key feature of the Kinglake township. The rolling fog was beautiful but a bit restrictive for drone flight. We waited for a clearing and then got some great photos. We are looking forward to continuing work on this streetscape renewal project. We always love travelling to different landscapes for our work.

24.01.2022 Announcing the winner of the Thomson Hay Landscape Architects Regional Landscape Award: Oshadi Jayasinghe! Last year Claire Reynolds was part of the panel reviewing the Deakin University Masters of Landscape Architecture students final work. Oshadi Jayasinghe presentation was very memorable. Her project, Revival: Drug Rehabilitation Landscape was inspired by a tragic story of a 10 year old who was exposed and coached to take drugs by her addicted mother. Oshadis work integr...ates the rehabilitation of an abandoned quarry with the rehabilitation of people impacted by drugs and alcohol. Read more about her project here: https://landscapeaustralia.com//2019-landscape-architectu/# With this dynamic work, she has gone on to win the 2019 Landscape Architecture Australia Student Prize: Deakin University, the WarraLilly Urban Design Award and the Spiire Urban and Landscape Planning Award. Well done Oshadi!

22.01.2022 Happy Holidays from everyone at Thomson Hay! We had a great night of pizza, music and fun last Friday night for our THLA Christmas party. Thank you to Liesl and Paul and everyone else who made it the fantastic night it was. Wishing everyone a safe and festive holiday break. We will see you in the New Year

22.01.2022 The Yarrowee River and Tributaries Masterplan Review project is moving along quickly. Weve used a variety of techniques to discuss the River with the community and stakeholders. Last week key stakeholders were invited to attend workshops to share their understanding of key issues and opportunities along the waterways and we pined the 36 maps up around the room for review. If you also have an interest in the Ballarat Yarrowee River, please complete the public survey on the C...ity of Ballarat MySay webpage. Please share your insights, values and vision for the Yarrowee River and tributaries. https://mysay.ballarat.vic.gov.au/yarrowee-river-masterplan Note, the survey closes on Wednesday.

22.01.2022 Great to see the next stage of the Barooga Foreshore Adventure Play complete in time for summer. This water play area will be lots of fun for all ages. Would be nice to take a trip down the water slide today!

21.01.2022 We designed the Spring Gully Kindergarten including the space being used daily for the Acknowledgment of Country shown in this video. Our brief was to create a nature-based play yard that supported the kindergartens education values and allowed them to develop their connections to local Aboriginal culture. At the completion of our work, there was a future project to create the Bunjil (eagle) sculpture and integrate local Aboriginal culture respectfully into the kindergarten...s daily program. It is wonderful to see this project now completed and enriching the lives of the whole community. This has been achieved by the ongoing efforts of the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation and the work by Noahs Ark and Communities for Children Bendigo. They have been working with members of the local community to create the Connecting with Culture on Dja Dja Wurrung Country Toolkit. This evolving toolkit aims to guide and support services to be welcoming and respectful to Aboriginal families and engage meaningfully with Aboriginal Culture, focusing on local connection and perspectives. Noahs Ark Inc and Communities for Children Bendigo have created Connecting with Culture on Dja Dja Wurrung Country a short video that aims to guide services on ways to provide welcoming and respectful spaces to Aboriginal families and engage meaningfully with Aboriginal Culture, focusing on local connection and perspectives. The information contained in this video relates to Dja Dja Wurrung Country. Please learn more by visiting http://c4cbendigo.com.au/. 20.01.2022 We have been working on the Yarrowee River and Tributaries Masterplan project over the past 3 months. This is a review of the original master plan that Thomson Hay Landscape Architects completed 25 years ago. The use of a drone with a high quality camera has greatly improved our ability to efficiently analyse over 50 kilometres of waterways.

20.01.2022 Spring at THLA is waratahs! #waratahs #spring #landscapearchitects

19.01.2022 Were excited to finally share the Yarrowee River and Tributaries Masterplan with the wider Ballarat community. Weve put a lot of work into this project over the last 9 moths and have enjoyed working with the Ballarat Council team. It was great to look back at the previous masterplan David and co. prepared 25 years ago, and to see how far technology has come in that time. We purchased our much loved drone for this project and the number of different software programs used t...o develop this report has far exceeded the techniques of the previous plan - not to mention creating a more efficient process. GIS software, AutoCAD, Illustrator, InDesign, Excel and Photoshop to name a few. You can view the full Masterplan or the summary version here: https://mysay.ballarat.vic.gov.au/yarrowee-river-masterplan If you live in the Ballarat region or know the Yarrowee River help council out with some feedback by letting them know your thoughts on our recommendations and the vision for the next 25 years. 19.01.2022 Great to see the progress on one of our pool designs. Thanks Ricky, it looks really good. We hope that the rest of this complicated, sloped backyards design will be coming together soon. See the concept plan in the comments below. #landscapearchitecture #pooldesign

17.01.2022 The recently upgraded Apex Park in Berrigan is looking great. We worked on the concept plan last year to relocate the shelter and playground to a more prominent location in the park to develop a larger play and gathering space. We met with the local mothers group to discuss their requirements and ideas for the park - more swings! -and have since seen another video of their first outing enjoying the new facilities. Berrigan Shire Council have done a great job improving this lovely small park.

16.01.2022 We're excited to finally share the Yarrowee River and Tributaries Masterplan with the wider Ballarat community. 16.01.2022 Paths and trails use is at an all time high and so we're sure the new footpath at Long Gully Rec Reserve, built earlier this year, is being well worn in. The Healthy Heart of Victoria is a great initiative and is providing much needed outdoor exercise infrastructure across the region. We completed the design for the path and reserve upgrades in December last year. Other upgrade features include a new toilet block at the splash park and outdoor exercise equipment stations.

16.01.2022 We are excited to see the Florian playground in Bonshaw taking shape! Florian Living is a new residential community in the Ballarat West Growth Zone. The form and colours of the playground and park are inspired by the Estate name Florian which means flowering or flourishing. We are pleased to be working with Adventure Plus Playgrounds and AMLA services (landscape contractor) on this project.

14.01.2022 So excited to see this project break ground this week! Weve worked really hard from concept to construction drawings to create a great new facility for the Swan Hill community. Looking forward to a summer trip up north.

14.01.2022 Thanks Proludic Australia for these lovely photos of the Swan Hill Adventure Playground. Its great to see Sandras artwork and the playground colours complementing the surrounding landscape. Still cannot wait to head up north and go down that slide now that playgrounds are open again! 14.01.2022 The Queen Mary Gardens in St Arnaud are looking lovely at this time of year. We worked closely with Northern Grampians Shire Council to prepare a landscape plan for the expansion of the gardens in the former bowling green site. The finished shelter and arbour structures look great with the autumn colour background.

13.01.2022 Our landscape contractors have been working hard on Pond 6 bank at Stonehill in Bacchus Marsh over the last few months. They have controlled weeds, repaired erosion, installed geocell, topsoil, mulch, jute mesh and planting. The site looks amazing now, and the photos show a great transformation over the last few months. Hopefully the planting will look even better as the plants start growing in Spring!

12.01.2022 The new Alfredton Grove entry sign is a simple, bold and eye catching design. The entry sign is made up of 3 concrete tilt up panels. 2 panels form a corner at 45 degree angle facing either direction on Ballarat-Carngham Road. A third panel appears to be floating with the Estate name Alfredton Grove on it. The estate logo, an Olive tree, has been cut out of steel and fixed to the panels as a sculptural form. We have also planted a grove of real olive trees behind the sign. The installation of the sign took only a matter of hours, as all the components were manufactured offsite.

12.01.2022 Some new tech at Thomson Hay! Looking forward to testing our new drone. Stay tuned for some awesome high quality aerial video and photography of our ongoing, completed and future projects!

11.01.2022 Weve had a great morning yesterday checking on some of our public open space projects that are currently under construction. We have typically been working with these developer clients for at least two years so it is exciting to finally see some on ground works. There is often a tight timeframe for the landscape contractors to complete these works, so they have to be organised and typically co-ordinate a range of sub-contractors including concreters, earthworks contractor...s, playground installers, plumbers etc. to ensure the construction works are completed on time and in accordance with the drawings. During the landscape construction phase our job is to oversee the work on behalf of the client. We work with the client and contractor to solve any site problems, and to ensure the projects aims are met, including design intent, quality and costs.

10.01.2022 Once again Riverside Park in Swan Hill continues to delight. One of the last pieces to be installed, the welcome posts featuring Sandras goanna, emu and kangaroo artwork look amazing at night. Our simple design, Sandras flair and great fabrication from the team at Michel Signs has created a striking entry to the adventure playground, at all times of the day. 09.01.2022 Great to see progress along the Tocumwal WAAAF (Womens Auxiliary Australian Air Force) Creek Walk. We undertook concept design and prepared a masterplan for the creek corridor last year and now Berrigan Shire are looking for an artist to develop and display the interpretive history of this area. The stories of the woman who lived and worked at the Tocumwal Airbase during WWII are fascinating and we look forward to seeing how the artists showcase this history

09.01.2022 It was a windy site visit to Avenue Hill residential development at Cardigan last week to see the progress of the playground and planting. The drainage swale planting has established really well in the jute mat material. The jute mat works to stabilise the swale, retain moisture for the plants and reduce weed growth until the plants establish. The playground is nearing completion and awaiting the construction of an adjoining picnic shelter and kickabout oval to provide a multi use space for the new residents.

07.01.2022 Great to see the boardwalk construction in progress at Lake Tyrell. We cannot wait to see our design finished complete with sky lounge, shelter, car park and giant 3D TYRELL letters on the horizon!

07.01.2022 Great to visit Mensforth Park in Tooleybuc alongside the Murray River last week. The construction of the stage 1 playspace, BBQ area and toilet block is starting to take shape. We are excited to begin working on the stage 2 youth space design area after some great consultation with the local school kids last week. Murray River Council

06.01.2022 We're really excited to share that our Yarrowee River and Tributaries Masterplan has been adopted by the Ballarat Council. We cannot wait to see the ongoing implementation along the corridor including the 4 priority projects. Check out councils article below for more information on the proposals and what happens next.

06.01.2022 The newest member to the Thomson Hay office crew! Meet Boston, or Boss for short. He is an 8 week old Labrador. Im sure the girls will be very excited to meet him on Monday!

06.01.2022 The Lake Tyrell Tourism Infrustrcture project construction progress impresses every month. The foundations of the building, the Water Sensitive Urban Design carpark and the installation of the sky lounge seats area this weeks highlights. Gradian Projects has done a great job of the construction so far - working with the elements. We wish we could control the wind to blow the water away from the ongoing jetty construction. Buloke Shire Council

06.01.2022 A selection of our first drone images including some from our first site visit to the Yarrowee River in the sunshine this afternoon.

05.01.2022 An unexpected dusting of snow made work a bit distracting this afternoon. The studio and surrounds were looking very wintery for a mid-spring afternoon #snow #dronephotography

05.01.2022 A beautiful day for a THLA excursion to the Lambley Gardens & Nursery in Ascot. Thanks to David Glenn for the great tour, the garden is looking wonderful and summery. We would recommend a visit.

05.01.2022 Yolanda and I recently called in to the Fenton property, Lanark near Branxholme in south western Victoria. Lanark was formally owned by John and Cicely Fenton and has now been taken over by their son, David Fenton. During the first few years of my landscape architectural career I was fortunate to spend a lot of time at Lanark, initially with RMIT landscape student groups led by Jim Sinatra, then helping out on the farm and finally attending field days and seminars with a...groforestry and environmental experts from around Australia and New Zealand. We had the drone with us, so took some footage of the property. It was almost the perfect time of the year for aerial photography as the wetlands were almost full and the pastures have not dried off. The environmental and agroforestry work that the Fenton family have undertaken on Lanark over the past 60 years is inspirational. I think that the drone footage clearly demonstrates this. Thanks for showing us around David. The property is looking fantastic. DH Please note: click the settings icon and make sure you watch the video at the best quality - 720p HD

04.01.2022 David has written a lovely tribute to John Fenton who passed away last month. John was a key influence on Davids early landscape architecture career and he has continued to pass on Johns teachings to our team. David and Yolanda were fortunate to visit John at the family property Lanark late last year to view the amazing wetlands and fly the drone around the property. You can read Davids farewell in the Foreground article below and additional tributes at this link: http://natureglenelg.org.au/vale-john-fenton-honouring-the/

04.01.2022 The reserve at Florian Living estate was looking lovely this sunny morning. Houses are starting to pop up around the park, not long now till some new residents move in to the estate and get to use this great space. Lots of fun to try out new techniques with the drone too!

03.01.2022 Great to visit the new Ballarat Hospice Care Inc. for the opening last month. The building and landscape have come together really well and provide an important new facility for Ballarat.

03.01.2022 In 2016, we prepared landscape plans for the Northern Grampians Shire for the former bowling green site in Queen Mary Gardens St. Arnaud. It is great to see the park under construction with the completion of the paths and the pergola currently being built.

02.01.2022 Yesterday Claire and Georgia braved the heat of Swan Hill to watch the installation of the long awaited Proludic Australia 8.7m high climbing unit and tunnel slide. It was all happening on site with the construction teams working hard on the shelter, play equipment, rubber surfacing, concreting and landscaping. Sandra Kropinyeris aboriginal artwork on the play unit and laser cut features for the shelter look beautiful and creates a unique playground that reflects Swan Hills culture and heritage. The playground is all coming together just in time for Christmas and we cant wait to head up again to go down that slide. Swan Hill Rural City Council

01.01.2022 Work continues to progress on the Lake Tyrell boardwalks, sky lounge, shelter, car park despite the ever inconvenient water blowing in. David went up to this beautiful landscape last week to assess progress and capture some stunning drone images. Imagine how great it will look when complete.
