We have an ambitious strategy in place to reduce the incidence and prevalence of respiratory conditions, which remains a leading cause of burden, disability and death in both Australia and New Zealand, and indeed globally. 18.01.2022 Today is #WorldAsthmaDay. On this day, we celebrate all the innovative researchers working on this disease. In particular, we'd like to highlight the 2018 TSANZ/NAC recipient Dr Hayley Scott, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Priority Research Centre for Healthy Lungs, University of Newcastle. "I enjoy asthma research because it's so important we all need to breathe. I believe my research can help make the life of someone living with asthma better" says Hayley.... An Accredited Practicing Dietitian, Hayley's research examines how obesity, nutrition and exercise impact asthma. She was the first internationally to find that carrying excess weight is associated with increased airway inflammation in adults with asthma. "I found that by losing 5-10% body weight, patient’s experienced clinically important improvements in asthma control and asthma-related quality of life." Her recommendations have been implemented into clinical practice guidelines published by the National Asthma Council Australia. "I love my job because I get to see first-hand how changing someone’s diet, exercise habits, and weight management can improve their life. Then I get to share these findings with other researchers, with the goal that our work will benefit the whole community."
