04.01.2022 For most of us, towing is not something we do every week and perhaps only attempt a couple of times annually. When we do tow it will likely be with a trailer, boat or caravan that we own or have borrowed. We tend to do more towing during the holiday seasons which is when thing can go wrong. Before hitching a trailer to your vehicle and setting of on holidays here is a few things to consider, 1. Any trailer we tow on public roads must be legally registered 2. Checking its maxi...mum load capacity and what weight your vehicle can legally tow. 3. If you are carting something large which weighs more than 2/3 or equal weight to the vehicle towing it, the trailer must have operational brakes. 4. Make sure when connected that the trailer coupling fits snugly on the tow-ball and cannot jump off. Most tow tongs have a safety device which needs to be locked in. 5. The safety chain connects via a D shackle to a bracket on the tow-bar. Make sure before leaving that the shackle is secure and is rated to take the load of the trailer should it become unhitched. 6. Trailer tyres need to be legal just like those on the car. They also need to be suited to load you are carrying, so check the load rating on the side wall of the tyre. Tyre's should also be check for age deterioration cracks in both the side wall and tread area. If there are visible signs then they should be replaced. Make sure the trailer comes with a suitable spare wheel and you have a jack that will lift it when laden. Your car jack is unlikely to do the job. 7. Service the wheel bearings. This is the most forgotten part of a trailer but the second most common thing that fail. Just think of all those people you have seen over the year on the side of the road with a trailer and one of the wheels is missing. This is most probably due to a massive failure in the wheel bearing. 8. Ensure all lights are working and that all electrical connectors and wires are in good condition and not damaged. 9. Make sure that what you are carrying is tied down securely and it doesnt hurt to recheck the straps when you stop for a rest. Tyre failure, wheel bearing failure , and unsecured load
