25.01.2022 OUR INSPIRATION FOR WHAT WE DO.... Alex was born on the 8th March 2017. From the start he was a very calm baby, and for the two days of his life everything seemed normal. On the third day of his life he stopped feeding and became very lethargic. He was transferred to the special care nursery, where the doctors at Princess Margaret Hospital were called to attend him as he was going into heart failure. He was rushed by ambulance to PMH. That was the moment our life was thrown u...pside down as we were told our baby boy might not make it through the night. Alex was a fighter and made it through the night, in the morning we were given the diagnosis of Critical Aortic Stenosis and Small Left Ventricle. HE had surgery at 5 days old to balloon open the aortic valve to give his left ventricle a chance to grow and function. In the blur of the first few weeks we were first introduced to Heartkids. They visited us most days to provide support and made sure we had a healthy lunch to keep us going. Unfortunately, over the next few weeks Alex’s left ventricle proved it wasn’t strong enough to support him and he ended up on life support again. The Doctors made the decision that the only option for him was to fly to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane for surgery to turn Alex’s heart into a single ventricle system (Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome) Within 24 hours Alex was on a flying Doctors Jet and we were on a plane following him to Brisbane. We spent 4 months in Brisbane where Alex had 2 open heart surgeries the first the Norwood at 6 weeks old and then the Glenn at 4.5 months old. LCCH was an amazing hospital and we were able to have our 6-year-old son Lewis there as well as there is a school at the hospital and the hospital is very supportive of siblings. Heartkids were an amazing support to our family in Brisbane with regular morning teas on the cardiac ward in which we could meet other Heart families and by being there for support and questions. Finally, when Alex was 5 months old, we were able to take him home. Alex is now 3 years old, has become the happiest smiling child who lights up our daily lives. Whilst we may not know what the future holds for Alex, we are so grateful to have him with us. We have so many people to thank, the fantastic Doctors and Nurses at PMH (now PCH), the RFDS, the most awesome staff at LCCH, our family and friends, our sons school community, our workplaces, the other Heartkid Families and finally Heartkids who have welcomed us into their family, and continued to provide support after we left the Hospital with morning tea sessions, a go cart for our older son amongst many other sessions and information.
