25.01.2022 Match Report: Under 14-2 Coach: San Frost Saturday, 19 September 2020 Thornton Beresfield 14... South Newcastle 6 Tries: Joshua Watkins (2), Kaleb Harper (1) Goals: Henry Hancock (1/3) Leading Runs: Kani Tapara/Henry Hancock (9), Joshua Watkins (8), Kaleb Harper (7) Leading Tackles: Joshua Watkins (17), Ashley Wade (13), Thomas Taleski (12) Completion Rate: 12/15 (80%) Man of the match: Joshua Watkins (3 - Joshua Watkins, 2 - Ashley Wade, 1 - Thomas Taleski). Both teams showed why they made the Grand Final Qualifier with an outstanding display in the first quarter. After trading set for set, Kaleb Harper forced an error from Lions winger, Riley Baggs, after a perfectly weighted cross-field kick from Captain, Machai Pillidge. In a sign of things to come, Joshua Watkins overcame multiple defenders to crash over the line in the following set. The second quarter started with a bang with Lions hooker, Marcus Ferguson being awarded a penalty try. Converted by Captain, Tye Wicks, the Lions took a 6-4 lead in the match and continued to build pressure on the Bears. Following back-to-back penalties, the Bears continued to defend before forcing an error and making their way down field. The Bears were then awarded their own penalty, allowing them to attack the Lions try line. Following a selfless run from Jack Bambey, Man of the Match Joshua Watkins repeated his previous effort scoring his second try under the black dot. The Bears took a narrow 10-6 lead into half time. The third quarter featured two teams giving everything they had. Both teams overcame penalties and errors and continued to compete on every play. The Bears were dominate in defence, led by some fantastic efforts from Ashley Wade, Thomas Taleski, and Joshua Watkins. The Bears were close to breaking the deadlock in the quarter with Kaleb Harper being held up over the line after a great draw and pass from Joshua Watkins. In the final quarter, neither team gave an inch, again showing the traits that got both teams into the post season. Penalties continued to flow, however, making it difficult for either side to build momentum. Working their way off their try line, the Lions took a slight advantage in the game with a Bears player sent off in the final minutes. Despite this setback, the Bears remained composed with Henry Hancock diffusing an attacking kick before commencing a counterattack. With 12 players, Thomas Taleski and Machai Jones combined for Kaleb Harper, who refused to be denied, scoring a try and helping the Bears seal their place in the Grand Final. The Bears and Lions had some great contests this season and this match was no different. As a coach, I’m proud of the Bears. Their commitment to each other, the standards that the boys are setting and their ability to overcome adversity is outstanding. Next week the Bears take on a highly talented Greta Branxton Colts side in what I’m sure will be the game of the season. Dan

15.01.2022 Match Report: Under 12 Pilgrim Coach: Greg Keyes Saturday, 19 September 20202 Today we took on the West Maitland Wallaroos in our final game of the year. After a fancy dress training session on Wednesday night, the team's spirits were high and we were determined to finish the season on a good note.... Before the game, the team committed to giving everything they had to try and secure their first win of the season. Today's game showed what you are all capable of when you are all in the game. The team;s defence was fast moving and aggressive. The attack was flowing with great ball movement from left to right but our teams trademark effort and enthusiasm was again the key. The game was a tough, close game as we entered the half time break at 6-6, but our confidence was growing. We defended extremely well in the third quarter and only conceded one try after an unforced error by us. Going into the last quarter, we knew if we scored and then defended like we had all game, we would win this game. The last quarter was highlighted again by strong defence, hard running, and a great desire by our team to get what they deserved. We finally got the try we needed and converted to give us a two point lead and then the confidence exploded. I have never seen this team as focused on defence as they were for the last three minutes, and even playing the last two minutes with only 12 players, we were never going to lose. We eventually won the game 12-10 and got what we deserved. Effort gets you everything and I'm so happy that our team finished the season with a win. Fantastic job everyone, today your resilience and effort was rewarded!
15.01.2022 Match Report: Under 8 Gold Coach: Sophie Pillidge Saturday, 19 September 2020 Today was our final game and I am beyond proud of the boys this year and this week. With only 8 players the whole season, the boys always showed up and gave it a red hot shot. ... Today we played Kurri and a great competitor - they are they really gave the boys and great game. So proud of you boys!!! Look forward to the next year!
