24.01.2022 BUT WHY WORRY ABOUT A PROPER WARM UP??????? The above stats say enough about the importance of a warm up. If us at Thornton physiotherapy can prevent one girl from hurting their ACL - we are saving them from 12 month rehab possible long term cartilage injury... losing enjoyment for their favourite sport stopping sport - which can have serious long term health effects (obesity, mental health, heart disease) So please tag your coaches/parents/friends and get us to come out and help your team enjoy netball without the injuries #thorntonphysiotherapy #sportsphysio #netball #injuryprevention #strengthtraining #netballknee

24.01.2022 Not trying to boast, but public health message. This week we had flood of injuries of people coming in after 2-3 weeks of training with various complaints of lower limb injuries. Mostly form too much training in short space/too little during lock down. Unfortunately for those that during COVID lock down did ZERO training, ZERO running, ZERO preparation, the time for prevention has passed. If you are sore, rest will not be the cure - it will only serve to decondition you fu...rther. Please don't let things go - book in/call us / ask for any help so we can keep you on the park. 23.01.2022 On the fifth day of our Injury-Free Christmas who here has ever felt a niggle, pain or some tightness in the outside of their elbow? Tennis elbow is a common condition related to working and overloading the tendon without adequate time for the tendon to recover. Pain is typically aggravated with activities like gripping and repetitive use, such as using triggers on pressure cleaners or vacuums, using scissors and typing. Our body is strong and at this time of year when there’s plenty to do to be ready for Christmas day and never enough time, just remember to listen to your body it’ll tell you if it needs a break! If you have or know of someone who would like more information about how to manage a niggling elbow, contact the team at Thornton Physiotherapy. H.W. Gruchow and D. Pelletier. 23.01.2022 Great post With covid 19 lockdown and a bit of rest the kids may have shot up (with all the rain especially ) Should they stop playing? NO Should they change how they train? YES What should that look like? Sometimes less intensity in training and/or reduced time (drop 25 min off session) and/or add some strength training to help those muscles catch up to those new longer legs

20.01.2022 On the 12thday and final instalment to our Injury-Free Christmas let’s talk sleep. Who here is looking forward to some sleep-ins? Going to bed without setting an alarm and not having to be anywhere the next day? We know we are!! But did you know that sleep also plays a big part in preventing injury AND illness too?... -Sleeping less than 5hrs per night means you could be 4.5 times MORE likely to have a cold! -And sleeping less than 7 hours per night could put both adults AND children at a greater risk of sustaining an injury -We also know getting enough sleep is important for motor function, mood and our ability to think and make decisions. If getting 7+ hours of sleep a night is a challenge for you, setting a sleep routine can help. Try going to bed and waking up the same time each day, even on the weekend. Having an optimal environment to sleep is also important. Minimising things like alcohol and caffeine before bed will help with the quality of your sleep, and keeping screen time down right before going to bed can help with that restful slumber. So as this ends the Twelve Days of our Injury-Free Christmas, from all of us at Thornton Physiotherapy we hope you and your families have a Merry Christmas, enjoy the holiday period and stay safe, healthy and injury-free! 19.01.2022 On the 11th day of our Injury-Free Christmas, we are talking about hip pain. With 1 out of 4 women over the age of 50 experiencing it, it is common place. Traditionally rest and cortisone has been used to manage this. But current best management is in fact exercise. Exercise has been shown to improve pain, function and walking distance faster than injections and lower recurrence. So don't let hip pain stop you enjoying your Christmas, or walking out if it is going sideways. B...ook in to find how we can help strengthen your hip and improve your pain. 18.01.2022 Follow on from yesterday about what netballers injure - the coach asked HOW Above is a good graph of how injuries occur. And as you can see 40% are from falls/contact but importantly 46% are from landing errors. This is why the netball knee program was delevoped - to improve landing control and technique. Hit the like and follow button to find out how we do that this week - or jump up to our story to see our Netball Knee video series... #thorntonphysiotherapy #sportsphysio #netball #injuryprevention #strengthtraining #netballknee

17.01.2022 Had a coach ask me "what are the main injuries netballers get?" So I thought I would throw this up from @netballaustralia showing ankle and knee injuries are their most common. Fortunately up to 65% of these are preventable This is why at Thornton Physiotherapy we come out to netball clubs for FREE to run teams through correct warm up to help reduce this. 14.01.2022 With all the gyms opening up and sport returning thought I would throw up this video on how to tell if you are doing too much too soon. WE see a lot of injuries sneak up when people jump back in with too much too soon. Sometimes just a little bit of time can settle this pain, but if you are having pain that * lasting more than 4-5 days * altering how you train/perform or making you miss sessions... Then give us a call. We are trained to identify a variety of causes of injuries and can help get you back into the gym and having fun before you know it See more

10.01.2022 On the 6th day of our Injury-Free Christmas There’s one thing a household full of family and a merry Christmas lunch can bring on a headache. Did you know there is evidence of headaches in society as far back as 7000BC? Back then it was thought that a headache indicated the presence of evil spirits, with treatment commonly involving removal of a bone segment from the skull to release these spirits! Thankfully that isn't done any more. At Thornton physio we assess a variety... of risk factors for your headache including posture, movement and control of your neck. We use hands on therapy to help ease the pain and provide some exercises to help prevent further headaches. So don’t let a headache interfere with your Christmas cheer- speak with the physios at Thornton Physiotherapy. https://headacheaustralia.org.au/what-i/adults-and-headache

09.01.2022 WHAT DOES A KNEE INJURY LOOK LIKE?? The following posts are the most common ways we see a knee injured IF this looks like a friend on the netball court - tag them and let them know that proper warm up and technique can help prevent injury. 09.01.2022 On the7th day of our Injury-Free Christmas ... As we all run around doing those last jobs /getting that summer body ready or just venting anger at Christmas decorations we all have the potential to develop knee pain (patella femoral pain syndrome). The current best evidence tells us that these injuries can be improved with strapping, activity modification (not stopping all activity) and importantly strengthening. 05.01.2022 Supporting @markhughesfoundation 5 years ago I was at a football match doing physio like every weekend since joining the degree. It was something that brought me great happiness to help people enjoy sport. And to that day I never had to manage anything very serious. Until a good friend went down in back play. He suffered a seizure, something we are trained to deal with. Little did we know that would start the player on a tough journey of brain cancer diagnosis and management.... The courage he has shown to date is in an inspiration. He is alive and well thanks to an excellent medical team. I put sage up as she is far prettier than him #markhughesfoundation #findacure See more

03.01.2022 On the 10th day of our Injury-Free Christmas as the year winds down many of us are looking forward to some time off work and the opportunity to get more active in this beautiful summer weather. When we start increasing our activity levels and not giving our body enough time to recover, you might start noticing some pain or tightness in your Achilles. Achilles tendon pain is something we commonly see in the new year after people have been more active over the Christmas break or as part of their New Year’s Resolution. Or wearing things all summer after wearing shoes all year. The good news is that Achilles tendon pain doesn’t have to stop you from being active. If you would like more information about how to best manage your Achilles tendon pain and get back to achieving your fitness goals, contact the physios at Thornton Physiotherapy
