21.01.2022 I get asked this question all the time and, weirdly, different people will give you different answers The general consensus is that ‘vintage’ is anything older than 20years, but there are some schools of thought that believe vintage should be 25years+ The reason that there is TECHNICALLY no hard and fast rule on what constitutes as vintage is because the word was never meant to be used to describe clothing... Vintage used to be a term only used in the winemaking world to describe a year that a wine was produced, particularly one that was of high quality (not necessarily an old one, which is why you can have a 2019 vintage bottle of vino ) It then became a term used to describe higher quality cars around the time that they started become more mass produced. A ‘vintage’ car was a well-made, high quality vehicle which was generally older compared to its more recently cheaper, mass produced counter part.. so by the time the word had made its way into the fashion world it colloquially meant old and high quality So there ya go, fun fact to impress your friends over 2019 vintage bottle of Shiraz Bonus fun fact: retro is just short for ‘retrospective’ and doesn’t actually refer to a specific time or era #vintagenerd
