25.01.2022 Why Hope is the best of things When you scratch below the surface of any of us, you may find big challenges, and a possibly a constant debate internally about whether we can handle it or not. Business challenges, personal challenges, relationship challenges. We’ve all got them and we can often battle with hope. What’s is up at stake is our hope for the future. This battle is what happens between the two main characters in Shawshank Redemption. It tells the story of a bank...er convicted of homicide, Andy Dufresne played by Tim Robbins. Dufresne maintains his innocence and survives 19 years of harsh prison life, never giving up hope. He creates an unlikely bond with fellow convict Ellis "Red" Redding played by Morgan Freeman. Redding has given up hope of ever getting out, and thinks hope is a dangerous thing. Andy finally escapes and writes to Red Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. Hope is the best of things because it reflects how optimistic we are. I’m not talking about just positive thinking. You and I have around 60,000 thoughts a day and most of them we’ve had before. What’s really interesting is that these thoughts are made up of questions we ask ourselves and the answers we decide are the right ones. Yes, we decide what things mean since most events in our lives don’t come with meaning built in. These answers make our explanatory style, and our mindset. Positive Psychology makes us aware of two questions we must be particularly aware of when bad events strike: how long will it last? And what else will it affect? Optimists find reasons for things that are relatively temporary and isolated in impact. You must be particularly vigilant about your thoughts when you are stressed, because stress encourages you to fill your mind with the stressor and dwell on all the gloom and doom that is unfolding. Why bother making this effort? Because optimists are more action orientated, persistent, healthier, more influential and wealthier. Plus optimists form better relationships, and that’s as good as it gets.
