24.01.2022 Have you had to seek help from your parents to get into the property game? Or do you expect that one day, when you want to purchase a property, going straight to your parents for the deposit is a no brainer? For us millennials, relying on our parents to get a foot in the proverbial property door is the new reality. In fact, new research by comparison website Mozo has found that one in three first home buyers are getting a financial helping hand from their parents. On aver...age, a first home buyer borrowed a minimum of $64,000 from their parents and 67% of parents weren’t expecting the money back. 41% of parents contribute towards the deposit whilst 43% allow children to live at home rent free. 13% act as a guarantor on the loan, 9% assist with repayments and another 9% purchase the property on behalf of the child. Understanding the difficulty of the current housing market, one in 10 parents are also willing to delay their retirement to assist their children in buying a home. There are concerns that this is making for a broken property market, with aspiring purchasers who do not have the support of parents finding it even harder to get a leg in.
