23.01.2022 In these very trying times hope everyone is taking care and isolating safely. Unfortunately due to the government rulings we have to announce that access to the garden is CLOSED to the general public until further notice. But here are some fab photos of the garden taken last week...enjoy.

23.01.2022 Looking forward to a bit of outdoor stuff on Wednesday night at Thrive. Looking forward to a bit of outdoor stuff on Wednesday night at Thrive.

23.01.2022 What a beautiful day to be out in the garden in all this madness. Had a bath donated and kindly delivered this morning for a pond. And some little visitors to Thrive.

19.01.2022 Mina and Ali from Gutter-Vac Banyule will be dropping absolute gold down at the garden on a regular basis which will be awesome for the garden. Just needs distributing around the garden where needed if possible please.

19.01.2022 We’ve got plenty of warmth and moisture in the soil. It’s a great time to be planting. We will work to get some winter crops in the garden this Saturday, including * Broad Beans (from seed) * Carrots (from seed - can we ever have enough?) ... * Onions (from seed) If anyone fancies bringing along a punnet of brassicas of any type (ie.. Broccoli, Cauliflower, etc) then now would be a great time to get some in the ground also. If you have anything else you are particularly keen on planting, then by all means bring down some seeds or a punnet and we’ll find a spot! Harvesting This is also an exciting time of year for harvesting our main crop vegetables. We expect there to be plenty of tomatoes and zucchini for members to take home this week. There will also be corn, beans, rhubarb, some apples and a few alpine strawberries to snack on. There are plenty of herbs and green leafy vegetables around the garden to pick as you need. Weeding Specific weeding tasks this week include * The bean patch (near the hazelnuts) * Weeding around trees Watering There is lots of rain forecast for tomorrow, so we are unlikely to need to do much watering apart from watering in seeds. That’s all that is expected. See you on Saturday from 9:30 am.

17.01.2022 Hello Thrivers, Looks to be a lovely day tomorrow and great news to see changes in isolation rulings. We can now have up to 10 people at the garden at any one time, provided we stick to the basic social distancing measures. ... Starting tomorrow, the working bees are back! Such a great day for outdoor activities. Unfortunately the garden will remain closed to the general public at this time until further notice. Because there is a limit on numbers though, we need to be a little more organised than normal. There are two changes to the usual Saturday setup. 1. We will run from 10AM - 3PM to allow as many people as possible to attend. 2. Let us know in the the WhatsApp group when you plan to attend and how many you will be coming * If it starts to look too full at one part of the day, we can move people around a little to make sure everyone can come. The same request still applies to bring your own tools / gloves, etc. and practice social distancing. u If you want to garden at any other time during the week, there is no real need to check that others are going to come any more, since it’s rather unlikely that 10 of us will want to go at the same time. That said, it is nice to see progress other people have made during the week, so feel free to upload photos to WhatsApp :-) With that out of the way, here’s what’s planned for this week. General 1. Marking out where the arbor is going to go so we know where to dig holes 2. Fixing a leak in the underground water line 3. General tidying around container. 4. Get a fire going to burn off a few things Planting We have still got some garlic to put in the ground - we’ll need to make beds to fit another 200 cloves. 100 have been planted so far. Harvesting Leafy greens- lettuce, silverbeet, etc. Oranges (possibly a little tart still) Snow peas (only a few to snack on) Coriander is starting to be available. Potatoes can probably all be harvested. Last few small zucchinis Green tomatoes We will also be clearing some beds that are done for the year. The corn patch is well and truly dead and all the tomatoes can come out now. Weeding Nothing particular jumps to mind, but there are always plenty of weeds to be found. Watering There’s been plenty of rain, so no need to worry about this. But please DO NOT use the main tank until that line is fixed. Looking forward to seeing your faces again on Saturday from 10am. Anyone wanting to become a member can do so, cost is $10 each or $20 family. The more the merrier. Just comment below and we will get back to you. Happy Gardening! 10.01.2022 Hello Thrivers, We’d normally have a working bee on this evening. However We are cancelling the official working bee times until further notice due to you know what... However, this does not mean you can’t help out and enjoy fresh produce from the garden! As far as we’re concerned, the garden is an essential service to the community and should continue operating in whatever way we can do so safely. It’s also a great way to break up the monotony of being stuck at home and a really healthy environment for us all to enjoy. :-) We are encouraging you to visit the garden when it works best for you. If someone else is there, just observe social distancing rules. And BYO tools and gloves. If you don’t have a watering can and want to do some watering, you can borrow one from the small garden shed. You can take it home with you afterwards and bring it down whenever you visit. A few things going on at the garden- Planting We are establishing a new bed near the compost heap area for planting garlic. Turf can be removed and the soil can be forked over to loosen it up. Garlic planting starting next week. Harvesting Beans, tomatoes, zucchini, silverbeet, corn are all available for harvesting. Please take what you need. And if you can remove any rotting fruit that would be great too. Weeding Removing the couch grass around fruit trees is always good. Otherwise, any weeds you feel comfortable identifying :) Watering Prioritise watering of seedlings. * carrots in the veggie box near the container (with shade cloth over them). * snow peas near the rhubarb to the right of the compost heaps * broad beans in the new bed near the rhubarb * onions, in a new bed near the bean patch. * brassica seedlings under the fine netting. * any others I might have missed. Happy gardening and enjoy the fresh air.

09.01.2022 So Saturday was the day to start erecting the Arbor! The last couple of weeks we’ve been getting ready by digging the post holes and concreting in the stirrups. Managed to get some of the posts up. More works are destined for this coming Saturday 20th June, so we’d love to see your friendly faces. We will be there from 10 until 3PM, so a rather wide window of opportunity :-) There is also of course plenty of weeding, etc. to be done and we have a bathtub pond that is ready to go into the ground too. So come along to help, advise or just chat. Hehehe. The more the merrier. Hope to see you.

09.01.2022 Hello everyone, unfortunately due to new lock down rulings we are restricted as to how many people are allowed at the garden. Please notify via the Whatsapps Thrive Community Garden group if you would like to go to the garden. That way we can make sure not too many people are there at the same time. Working bees will be cancelled from this time forward until further notice. Take care and keep thriving.

07.01.2022 Unfortunately due to the snap lockdown there will be no working bee today. But visit if it's within your 5 km radius. Take care and stay safe.

06.01.2022 Our basket of harvested goodies we donated yesterday to the Greenhills Neighbourhood House, Second Bite. So happy to be helping out others in the community with fresh produce. Crazy days but you know what?....You got this....why not join us tomorrow at our Diamond Creek community garden from 9.30am. If you come we ask you to byo gloves and tools just because of the COVID 19 virus. We are still open for fun in the great outdoors.

06.01.2022 Hello everyone, Time to fill everyone in on the latest happenings down at the garden. We are still ticking along even if things have been more uncertain of late. There are weekly working bees and we would love to see you there sometime soon.... Saturdays we are generally down there from about 10am and Wednesday evenings around 6:30pm. Tonight we are having our committee meeting down at the garden also from 6pm over a shared meal. All members are welcome to attend if they feel like it. Please bring along your own food cutlery / crockery etc. Working bee will take place after the meeting concludes if there is still light left. If you can’t make it on Wednesday we would of course love to see you on Saturday. Planting It’s a great time to plant brassicas, carrots, onions, from seed. We've been working on preparing some beds that will be able to be used, but more could be done as quite a few of the beds are pretty overgrown at the moment. Plenty of kale has popped up voluntarily, so no real need to plant any of that. Same applies to daikon radish. Harvesting There’s a good crop of apples on the trees at the moment. We might harvest most of it over the next couple of working bees though as there has been a bit of fruit fly in the area and we would rather not let it get to that stage. Also, plenty of rhubarb to harvest and a good amount of potatoes that are ready to pull out as well. Weeding / Mowing There is lots of weeding and mowing to be done. Unfortunately our mowers are not working at the moment. If anyone feels like bringing along a mower and get a little mowing down, any bit counts. Hope to see you down there soon. Happy Gardening!
