22.01.2022 When a child stops sucking dummies, fingers & thumbs, we see lots of changes in tooth position and facial development. It’s really awesome to see these changes for us here at Thumbs Away (and the Mum’s & Dad’s too!) We take photos and measurements throughout the journey so you can see the progress too.
22.01.2022 Amazing results for this little miss A very impressive change in teeth position after successfully completing her QUIT program. If you need help your little person give us a call.
21.01.2022 The use of dummies doubles the risk of posterior cross bite and triples the risk of anterior open bite, which can increase the risk of orthodontic treatment. We encourage the cessation of dummies at the age of 6 months, solids are introduced the development of chewing muscles are important. We offer a parent led program from 6 months that improves facial tone , encourages chewing and discouraged sucking behaviours
21.01.2022 Could this little face be any prouder ??!!! Meet Miss W, she has completed her thumb sucking program and has successfully QUIT her thumb sucking habit. It has been such an honour in supporting her along her journey
21.01.2022 Thumb and dummy sucking not only alters the growth and development of a childs teeth and jaw, it can be responsible for developing a tongue thrust. The following video explains it perfectly.
19.01.2022 Thumb and dummy sucking not only disturbs the growth of teeth and jaws it also creates a tongue thrust. Take a look at this video shared by Smart Mouth.
19.01.2022 Why Thumbs Away is Different? Helping children to understand the why behind our treatment plans and programs empowers them to commit to making lasting changes. We dont just treat their symptoms, we address the undesired habit as a whole. We acknowledge that ceasing dummy, finger and thumb sucking can be a stressful time for both parents and children alike so our sessions, programs and follow-ups have a particular focus on being as fun and relaxed as possible. Contact us for more details on our very successful QUIT program www.thumbsaway.com.au
19.01.2022 I was lucky enough to help this little 7 year old stop her thumb sucking habit. She has done such an amazing job here are a few words from her mum ... I thought I would never get my 7 year old to stop, we had tried everything, but one week after first meeting Kate she did and we have never looked back!! Almost three months in and we are done with the thumb sucking. Everyone who sees her now, teachers, relatives and friends cant believe how easy it was for a child who was so heavily reliant on it for everything! The best part was it was no tears, no crying and no screaming just a calm and easy way to stop. I just wish I had found Kate a few years earlier Contact us if we can help you and your child.
17.01.2022 At thumbs away we identify the triggers that may be associated with your child's thumb or finger sucking. Boredom, anxiety, television, special blankets and stuffed animals are examples of what may be triggering your child's sucking. We develop an individualised program for your child to control those triggers helping to quit their habit. Meet Phenty, he has been a loved and strong trigger for his little thumb sucker. We popped into a special place to stay during this QUIT journey.
17.01.2022 Anterior open bite is a dental condition where the top & bottom back teeth are in occlusion or touching when you bite down but the front teeth are separated/create an open space. This little girls thumb sucking contributed to her anterior open bite and created a tongue thrust. This photo is a before and just 6 short weeks after stopping her thumb sucking. We have been correcting her tongue thrust and improved her tongue posture.... We have seen an improvement in her anterior open bite and her speech. Also such a boost in her confidence! See more

12.01.2022 This is my little girl, isn’t she cute! Notice how she is breathing with her mouth closed... Why am I sharing this with you? Because nasal breathing is healthy breathing, it is how we should breath as;... air is filtered and humidified as it moves through the nose nose breathing promotes healthy development of the sinuses and facial bones it supports the teeth and jaw to align properly and so much more! Healthy nose breathing is our goal

12.01.2022 Congratulations to these two gorgeous kids . They have both successfully completed their QUIT program and no longer suck their fingers. These guys have made such a difference to the position of their teeth in just four short months Here is what their beautiful mum had to say .. Kates program is one of the best things I have ever done for my children and I cant recommend her highly enough!! They were both finger suckers and not only have they now completely stopped, ...their teeth are looking so much better. Kate is brilliant with kids and we were so lucky to have found her. If we can help you contact us for an appointment.
12.01.2022 These are BIG tonsils! Why are they a problem? Can you see the small black areas at the back of this child’s mouth? That is the space available for oxygen to get through when this child breathes. These tonsils are a problem because they’re an airway obstruction and can cause further health issuesand not just Tonsillitis
10.01.2022 This amazing guy has been smashing his thumb sucking program with flying colours. It has been such a pleasure to help this beautiful family.
09.01.2022 What is a 'Tongue Thrust' The tongue is a muscle that should be lightly suctioned to the roof of the mouth (palate) when in rest position. Lips should be closed and breathing should be light and through the nose. When swallowing, the upward pressure is increased and the tongue thrust creates forward/lateral pressure. We swallow over 700 times per day so this tongue thrust can contribute to a low-forward rest posture, anterior open bites and difficulties with speech artic...ulation. #thumbsaway #kateoakley #dentists #thumbsucker #goodbyedummy #dummies #morningtonpeninsula #mteliza #orofacialmyologist #baysidemums #quitprogram #tonguethrust See more

09.01.2022 Oral Posture and Tongue Thrust. We explain... A tongue thrust is an orofacial myofunctional disorder. 09.01.2022 Some great tips from the amazing Thumb Sucking Clinic
09.01.2022 Tip 2 to ditch thumb sucking or dummies... When watching tv or in the car, try a busy box full of legos, stress balls and play dough and distractions like puzzles. This helps to keep the hands occupied and away from the mouth!
08.01.2022 Mouth Breathing and Snoring (& no not your husbands!) When youre a mouth breather, not only are you at an increased risk of dental decay and gum disease, but you are also more likely to develop a high narrow palate which increases the risk of crowding and malocclusion. Did you know that the roof of your mouth is the floor of your nose? When your palate develops narrow and high it is actually taking away space from the nasal cavity and sinuses. Our children deserve the best possible start in life, let us solve this problematic issue at Thumbs Away.
07.01.2022 A lot of parents ask us Is giving my child a dummy bad for their dental development? Many of the kids we see can often do have issues with their teeth and jaws from sucking a dummy as an infant. The most common issue associated with dummy sucking is the development of an anterior open bite, where the front top and bottom teeth dont touch when the back teeth bite together. Just like digit and thumb sucking, the impact of sucking a pacifier depends upon the intensity of ...sucking, how long the dummy is used for and also how often. An older child who has a dummy in its mouth all day is much more likely to have issues than a 4 month old baby who uses a dummy just to go to sleep. Although there is a barrage of dummies on the market, purporting to be orthodontic in nature, there are few dummies that dont eventually interfere with growth of the the jaws and teeth and cause issues with speech and feeding. Here are just a few important tips to remember if you are going to use a pacifier: Try to stop using them by 6 months - thats when babies start eating solids so they need to develop their chewing muscles.... A dummy is called a pacifier - so dont use the the one unless youre trying to calm your baby. Try to limit it just to sleep time Dont let them walk around with it all the time! Injuries can happen with toddlers and dummies. Plus they are trying to learn facial expressions and speech - give them a chance to do that. Remember, sucking is developmentally normal in babies, but as babies grow, they grow out of it and learn the skills to chew.....so you should really never see a pacifier in a toddler. We are here to help though, you are not alone! Visit www.thumbsaway.com.au to book your first consultation.
07.01.2022 Over the next few weeks we are going to share with you Tips & Tricks to get your wee ones to kick the habit!! TIP ONE 1 If your child is over the age of 4 and has expressed a... desire to quit, it is definitely an ideal time. But where should you start? Well triggers such as blankets, toys, hair pulling and stroking (theirs or another persons), can contribute to sucking. Try putting blankies and teddies where they can be seen and not touched. #thumbsaway #kateoakley #dentists #thumbsucker #goodbyedummy #dummies #morningtonpeninsula #mteliza #orofacialmyologist #baysidemums #quitprogram
07.01.2022 So we ask founder of Thumbs Away, Kate Oakley ...So just what are the dangers for Thumb suckers for children? Thumb & digit sucking will usually have some form of impact on dental growth & development. It can result in incorrect tongue & lip posture & functions. Thus affecting speech & misalignment of teeth
06.01.2022 I was so lucky to help this gorgeous little family. Often thumb and finger sucking can be simply from mimicking others ... so true in this case - this beautiful girls does exactly as her big brother does. And just as her brother did these guys have stopped finger sucking and their parents could not be prouder. If we can help you contact us for an appointment.
04.01.2022 These are our three main goals here at Thumbs Away & what we are trying to achieve.. Lips closed: the lips acts as a fence applying positive pressure to the teeth- helping them to grow in alignment. Tongue up to the palate: applies pressure to the maxilla helping it grow wide creating more space for the adult teeth to erupt - when its not there the palate can grow high and narrow & develop a tongue thrust & mouth breathing.... Breathe through the nose: why? because its so good for them - The nose filters air cleaning it before it enters your body - picks up better oxygen to the blood and keeps the airways open - mouth breathing effects teeth increases decay and periodontal disease. #thumbsaway #kateoakley #dentists #thumbsucker #goodbyedummy #dummies #morningtonpeninsula #mteliza #orofacialmyologist #baysidemums #quitprogram

02.01.2022 Often when we assess kids there are other underlying issues at play. We have a great referral network of professionals to assess what’s happening with your child and get to the centre of the problem as efficiently as possible. Hi Kate, we just personally wanted to thank you so much for referring us to Dr Ross (ENT) and noticing there was more of a problem than just her thumb sucking. Jess G.
