04.01.2022 Today is #RUOK day, a reminder that a conversation could change a life BUT this is an everyday conversation... something that needs to be continued and not just done ONE DAY A YEAR! Someone might say yes they’re ok today, but are they really? Tomorrow ask hey how’s things? ... the next day maybe talk about yourself share some of your own problems! When you share with people you allow them to open up back to you. R U OK is an everyday. Use other languages not just words. B...ody language like a gentle touch on the hand (yes covid safe and personal space safe) a small smile to a person who you might not even know to say HI I SEE YOU. Most people with depression and mental health issues feel lost and lonely. Even saying to a stranger something nice like how their dress is lovely or you like their shoes can make their day. HOW TO R U OK SUCESSFULLY Step 1: If you are worried about someone, ask "Are you ok?" or things mentioned above. Step 2: Listen to what they have to say. Empathise but don’t talk over them. VALIDATE and don’t say things like there’s people off worse or it will go away. Step 3: Encourage action and offer your support. But don’t try to fix people. Ask them if they want your help of if they just need an ear. Just sitting and listening or just even sitting with someone for a while helps SO MUCH. Step 4: Check-in with them again at a later stage. But don’t barrage them. Ask open questions like tell me about your day ... how did you go with ___? Learn what to say after R U OK? and keep the conversation going if someone says No, I’m not OK. You don’t have to say YES you can say no not really but I don’t feel like talking about it then you are at least self validating and it is ok to NOT be ok. Even seeing a GP and having a chat can help because they’re non-judgemental. It is ok to get counselling, see a psychologist or a psychiatrist. Take your health in your own hands and be proactive. SELF CARE is important. If you’re not ok and your tired REST. Start again tomorrow.
